PS: The 2010 Dekade: Persons of International Interest

  • 1
  • Praise
  • Updated 4 weeks ago
Preface:

I don't know, if polls are allowed, if they touch political content. But I've also seen that there are social issues picked up in some polls. So - how political may a poll be? Where is the border?

Intro:

Which of these persons of international interests is your favorite? Discuss here.

Rules:

Living persons with political, financial or social heavyweight. The biggest influencers on earth, no second row - which means something like people who are the biggest of their countries and have to be known through news media. No dead persons, except they had a very big role in the 2010s.  Rules are pretty expendable on tat issue. ;D

She's only a teen, that's right and that's why I don't like the way she's over-exposed at her age like a sort of Joan of Arc figure. It's not about underestimating her but I think one of the biggest harms you can do to a child or a teen is to make him/her believe that he/she's an adult or adult enough to give lessons, no matter how bright and enlightened they are. It goes far beyond the content of your mind, it's experience that forges maturity.

And her parents should be more careful because I don't think any kid is mentally prepared to face such an immediate and worldwide fame without a few damages, maybe not now, but in the future. Because once you give a high status, you can't take it back and the effects are unpredictable. It's an exhausting journey the girl is going through, facing harsh critics and hyperbolic demonstrations of love, anyone can get carried away with that, especially in our media-driven age where it's all about symbols, faces, narratives etc.

And I don't understand why in a time where we're so cautious about exploitation and abuse of children, no one ever considered that 16 is still an age to be exploited. Greta didn't get alone on that crusade, there are adults, organizations, media, behind her using her young age, her face, her "narrative" as the perfect symbol, turning her into an intouchable totem to incarnate the fight for environment. It's a noble cause but the way she's used as a symbol is far from noble. And even on a political level, while I don't believe in "bad guys", I don't believe in "saints" either.

But my perpective isn't about politics, I'm a teacher for kids whose ages vary from 11 to 16 and one thing I learned from experience is that even the most mature of them isn't yet fully constructed as an adult and need more time in school, with friends, family, to assimilate things, to have fun, to learn... instead of believing he or she is the Messiah of a cause, no matter how great the cause is. And the saddest thing about Greta is that both her detractors and fans do to her a great disservice. That's my opinion.

15yearsIMDber aka ElMo, great point there. I'm not against her and her points, but whenever I see her I just can't wondering, whether her willpower is enough and whether it could crumble under the initial pressure. It's a bit disturbing already to see the amounts of hate she receives from strangers on a daily level.

It's dangerous to be a symbol for anything and at any age. One hell of a job.

Well, Greta Thunberg is no Macaulay Culkin and no Michael Jackson, which both were kids beneath the age of ten years, when they had their high-time. They had no borders and no suitable care. But these were other times, it's 30 years later now. I'm pretty sure that Mrs. Thunberg has a staff of people behind her to help her to cope with attacks of opposing groups. I guess they'll have some psychologists on board. She had the initial idea to start this at age of 16 and even her parents couldn't get that out of her mind. Sometimes even young people do what they do and some are not really stopable, because their will is so strong. What would have been an alternative? Putting her into a mental health clinic to cleanse that weired ideas out of her? I don't think so. There are so many poeple standing behind her. Don't underestimate the whole movement. Environment activist always stood sticked together in past. If she was male, no one would complain about. She gets strong headwind. This is her time of learning to cope with that. Jackson and Culkin suffered on never having real headwind. So they got loose in decadence. After all, if she would really fail, she still would have no problem to find a job in the environment industry. She still could sell solar pannels or wind turbines. But I believe she's a fighter. She has her chances and takes it.

Beside the discussion if that is good or bad for Greta Thunberg, I think she is a worthy candidate for standing on this list, because she started a worldwide youth movement since 2018, which is clearly in the last decade. And since then, she is in the news over and over again. Don't you think she is a worthy candidate for this list? ;D

Sometimes, I do not answere as I should. When I wrote the k in the title, I ran in German mode. And I'm still fan of the wrong written c --> k in Mortal Kombat. ;) The edgy K also looks more aggressive than the round C. That makes sense. But I know that my title was obviously wrong written. ;) ... Since you told me. ;)

My vote will likely go to Col Needham. I sincerely consider that IMDb is underrated as a global thing that aids everything: actual industry, education, researches ranging from independent small ones to much larger company-based, promotion, archiving... There are downsides. Everything has at least some. But results are already so large it's painful to see how neglectful people could be towards this website. To think that something so global began with a simple list of movies seen not unlike one I'm conducting on a daily basis always brings me in awe and fascination.

I really like the selection so far, by the way. It's rather neutral (which is how it is supposed to be) and really is based on the impact of certain figures. I'm not exactly proud of entry from my country, to be honest, but impact of the person is indisputable. It's just that it's also rather unclear and kind of destabilizing so far.

Peter, that remark was uncalled for.
It is the most logical choice.
You assumed I made the choice based on an assumption of my character. And a supposed bias of some sort.
The reasoning why that is the most "LOGICAL" choice is because he has created "the most" "International Interest" as the poll asks.
He is the most hated and reviled all the while being admired worldwide.
He is by far more recognized than the majority contained in the poll.
My reasons don't qualify as a "Figures" as you say, but are "Calculated".
I please ask that in the future you please do not stoop down to my level.
You up until today were above me.
You have let me down in my admiration of you. And I screenshot that.
Saving it and framing it!

I think that your poll is too focused on the last half of the decade, this is maybe why it is not going live.

It is also very political,  I don't believe that IMDb is willing to take part in that.

One of the key players in the Middle East; remember that Trump's first foreign trip was to Saudi Arabia. Just saw a documentary about "MbS" and his involvement in the Khashoggi case on arte (German).

Another option is another Brazilian president Lula da Silva, I would say he is more important than Bolsonaro, who only lead a group of people trying to stop the popularity of the left wing leader.

da Silva was considered the most important person in the Latin American left, he had a big influence outside his country, and still is a major figure in Brazil.

Not in the background at all, he was President of Brazil from 2003 to 2011. While this is mostly in the wrong decade, he was also influential during the 2010's.

He turned his country into the 8th biggest economy of the world, and was essential for Rio to win the 2016 Summer Olympics.

After leaving the presidency he was chief of staff for his succesor, Dilma Roussef, until he was accused of a corruption scandal and put in prison, but many believe he's innocent.

During the 2018 presidential campaign, that eventually was won by Bolsonaro, Lula intended to be a candidate and was by far more popular, reaching 33% of the vote intention over Bolsonaro's 15%. He was, however, forced to abandon the campaign after going into prison.

He was freed in 2019, but the issue is bound to remain giving news for a lot of time.

There's more about him here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Luiz_In%C3%A1cio_Lula_da_Silva

There's also a Netflix series, O Mecanismo, a dramatic fiction based on the real case corruption scandal
And the Oscar nominee Documentary The Edge of Democracy is about him. So you can say he is also influential in movies.

I guess while the Covid-19 pandemic is running, just a few people who don't get it, will deny that he is a very necessary person for the whole world. It was good that albstein made a more serious suggestion. I guess you gave him the idea. Decisions of big polititians are necessary now, too. In some federal states of G, there is a lockdown in several areas like discos, cinemas ... and so on to slow down the outbreak. Our scientists are running on high speed for producing vacines to fight corona. The letality differs from country to country. Last numbers I now from Italy were ~31.000 infected, ~2500 dead people. In Germany the letality is some lower, but I haven't saved numbers for G. The better the health care system is, the better are the chances to survive. In G we just make improved clinic areas to cope with it. A lot of breathing machines are ordered and there are doctors reactivated from retirement and medic students are going to be prepared to help for the worst case.

Thank you for your like, Abi.
There was a fem polititian from Italy who told in German TV that the many death in the Lombardy resultet of many old people living there. The health condition of humans seems to be the most correct factor for predictions about death cases. Second seems to be the health care system. It is openly discussed, if we should shut down for some time. The virus seems to be malicious. One fem polititian from FDP who survived COVID-19 told about the feeling to be drowning when she had the virus. The lungs fill with water of the body. That's a bad thing to suffer. One Area is already shut down, where the virus spread very fast and unrecognized for some time. I hope that all doctors and nurses that work on the front get the vacine at first to help all others. (yes these are circumstances like in war - Angela Merkel held a speech of corona beeing the biggest crisis for Germany after WWII).

It's the best tactic to avoid contact. Divide old people from young and skip festivals, cinema, shows, parades. 1,5m distance can be enough to avoid being infected! Rule 1: Wash your hands, when ever you touched something that might be infected (handles, money, other things, strangers had in their hand or coughed at). Avoid crowds or gatherings of people. Do not cough in your hand, cough in the crook of your arms or the t-shirt by lifting the collar over the mouth. Don't use a breathing mask before you're infected. The warm and moist milieu forces the virus to grow. If you are infected, use the mask to avoid spreading the virus. Old people mostly know whats going on and probably will be delighted, if you support them without deadly contact. It's time to break the spread of the virus as effective as we can. Please avoid panic, but take it serious. Corona is nothing to take easy.

I have a feeling that old people are most resistant to reason in this case. We had to convince our grandma not to visit us. Let's hope she will accept that we buy her groceries. I've heard of many similar cases where the elderly are adamant to carry on with their lives and don't see the danger, no matter what they are told by family members.

Your recommendations are good, Breumaster. We can also generally refer to the WHO's Advice for public. It is important to check what the experts say and follow their advice closely. This is not the time to base our decisions on our own gut feeling. Too many people believe they know better than the top virologists with their urgent warnings.

My Ma is an old peoples home. They have shut down visiting old people to protect them. I can only say that I take it strongly serious, because I have never seen such an effort to inform people and doing such a concertation of policies in the whole country in my whole life.
That's a completely new situation, I never had to face! I watch the "Tagesthemen", "Tagesschau" & "Heute" every evening and can only be astounded that 3/4 to 4/5 of news is about the covid-19 pandemic.

The crowded streets are cleared away and there is barely no traffic in the streets. Some business is completely shut down. Only some branches of industry and the system relevant services still run. I'm one of the "glad" people who has an allowance to make my way to work.
On several places police does controlls, if people keep the regulations they are bound to in the crisis. The medic forces are doing their job, completely overworked, but brave. For godsake there is no panic. Our government did a good job. If your location has corona infections, best stay at home. If all runs on rails, we can put down the letality rate.

Drosten would be a good choice, as would be Dr. Anthony Fauci

Drosten has become very famous here because of a daily podcast and other media appearances. He presents the facts calmly, is always straightforward about where his own expertise ends, and admits occasional mistakes. The country listens attentively to him. That's why I initially mentioned him, even though the relevance of his media presence seems to be limited to Germany.

Anthony Fauci is also a good idea, and perhaps WHO director Tedros Adhanom.

Dr. Fauci is on the list. ;) To put Adhanom on the list, I would have to skip another person. I don't want to.

German virologist, discoverer and researcher of the Middle East respiratory syndrome coronavirus (MERS-Cov), building the research-base for testing methods in 2012 which is also the base for the fight against the actual COVID-19-pandemic
I think what you mean is "the current COVID-19 pandemic" (aktuell = current; actual = eigentlich)
