Golden Globes: Why 'Parasite,' 'The Farewell' and 'Pain & Glory' Weren't Nominated for Best Picture
The HFPA's rules stipulate that contenders in the best drama or comedy/musical categories must feature at least 50 percent of English dialogue.

'The Farewell' Deserves to Be Seen as an American Drama
Lulu Wang's film is nominated in the Foreign Language category at this year's Golden Globes. That choice undermines the diversity of the American audience.

Unraveling the Oscars’ Foreign-Language-Film Debate
The newly rebranded Best International Film award calls attention to how unfair the Academy’s rules are for filmmakers outside the U.S. and Europe.

Inside the Oscars’ Self-Inflicted Best Foreign-Language Film Headache
Take The Farewell for instance. The acclaimed indie drama follows an American-raised woman (Awkwafina) who travels to China in order to say goodbye to her terminally ill grandmother. Based on the real-life experiences of writer-director Lulu Wang, who is Chinese-American, The Farewell is told primarily in Mandarin with English subtitles, though its protagonist also speaks English. Though ineligible for Best International Feature Film at the Oscars because it's an American production, the title's also barred from competing for Best Musical/Comedy at the Golden Globes. Their rationale? It's a foreign-language film.

The original title of The Farewell is in English. No reason to include any other title.

Thanks, I am aware that film is an American production and its original title is 'The Farewell'. I removed the term "original" as in this case it is confusing and misleading. I revised the notes for each nominee to reflect the dominant language used in the film, the country of production and the non-English title most worldwide moviegoers may know the film by, AS POINTS OF INTEREST and to better associate the options for non-Anglo voters.

Mandarin Title: 别告诉她 aka 'Bie gao su ta' (USA)
French Title: 'Les misérables' (France)
Spanish Title: 'Dolor y gloria' (Spain)
Korean Title: 기생충 aka 'Gisaengchung' (South Korea)
French Title: 'Portrait de la jeune fille en feu' (France)

Urb,

I rescued your post from GS's spam filter. I suspect the Korean text probably triggered the spam filter.

A few years ago multiple users spammed GS and IMDb with massive numbers of posts in Korean advertising Asian casinos.

Thanks.

10 films make shortlist for Oscars' best international film
The 10 short-listed films are: the Czech Republic's “The Painted Bird”; Estonia's “Truth and Justice”; France's “Les Misérables”; Hungary's “Those Who Remained”; North Macedonia's “Honeyland”; Poland's “Corpus Christi”; Russia's “Beanpole”; Senegal's “Atlantics”; South Korea's “Parasite” and Spain's “Pain and Glory.”

Two Golden Globe nominees won't be in contention at the Oscars. The Farewell is ineligible because it is an American production. While Portrait of a Lady on Fire is ineligible due to the limit of one submission per country and Les Misérables officially secured France's slot.
