Sequel nominations and winners

Few sequels have been nominated for Best Picture and just two have won: The Godfather Part II and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King. Other nominees include The Bells of St. Mary's, The Godfather Part III, The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers, Toy Story 3, and Mad Max: Fury Road.[18]

Another nominee, Broadway Melody of 1936, was a follow-up of sorts to previous winner The Broadway Melody. But, beyond the title and some music, there is no story connection to the earlier film. The Silence of the Lambs was adapted from the sequel novel to Red Dragon. The latter had been adapted for film as Manhunter by a different studio. Best Picture nominee The Lion in Winter features Peter O'Toole as King Henry II, a role he had played previously in the film Becket. But Winter is not a sequel to Becket. Clint Eastwood's Letters from Iwo Jima was a companion piece to his film Flags of Our Fathers, released earlier the same year. These two films depict the same battle from the different viewpoints of Japanese and United States military forces; the two films were shot back-to-back. In addition, Black Panther is a continuation on the events that occurred in Captain America: Civil War.

Several musical adaptations based on material previously filmed in non-musical form have won Best Picture, including Gigi, West Side Story, My Fair Lady, The Sound of Music, Oliver!, and Chicago

Potential 2020 Oscar Best Picture Nominees @ 92nd Academy Awards
(TOP 50) 2020 Oscar Predictions: Gold Derby Predicts the 92nd Academy Awards

Joker 2019 | Movie 8.7 (555,212)
Prequel Movie Series: Batman: The Movie (1966), Batman (1989), Batman Begins (2005), Batman: Year One (2011), and The Batman (2021)

Avengers: Endgame
2019 | Movie 8.5 (628,752)
Sequel Movie: The Avengers (2012)

Toy Story 4
2019 | Movie 7.9 (140,392)
Sequel Movie: Toy Story (1995)

Doctor Sleep 2019 | Movie 7.5 (45,370)
Sequel Movie: The Shining (1980)

A Best Picture nomination for Joker (2019), Avengers: Endgame (2019), Toy Story 4 (2019) or  Doctor Sleep (2019) in the Oscars 2020 Best Picture category would bring the total of Best Picture follow-up movies to just under a dozen. A notable mark for an award ceremony that over ninety-two years prizes originality and has demonstrated an aversion to movie series with prequels, sequels or concurrent movies in its nominations.

I don't think the 'Joker' is a prequel or a sequel to any of those films.

Just because they are from the same background (comics) doesn't mean they're connected.

Even for a second, if we believe they're connected somehow. How are they a prequel? Bruce Wayne was a kid in the 'Joker'.

Fair enough,  I can see your point.

I do think BOTH the upcoming The Batman (2021) and Joker (2019) are part of the "Year One" story arc published by DC Comics which recounts the superhero Batman's first year as a crime-fighter. We will have to wait to see if The Batman (2021) is Oscar-nominated.
