Set Apart: The Jim Abbott Story 2018 | TV Movie James "Jim" Abbott
"Baseball movies don't tend to do great business outside of baseball fans, and sometimes that's because the movie in question isn't very good (see: my oft-repeated, multi-chapter rant on fundamental game errors in The Scout). Other times, the film isn't marketed correctly, focusing more on the "baseball" than the "movie" and not emphasizing the universal appeal of some of the game's great stories and characters. We've had a decent run recently, though -- Moneyball and 42 came out better than I expected, and were received well -- and it's made me hopeful that we can revisit some of the game's greats (or interesting also-rans) at the multiplex."
The Babe Ruth Story (1948)
The famed slugger is played by Bendix,
who resembles Ruth slightly in looks and not at all in baseball ability.
The film traces the "life and times" of Ruth,
including his famous "called shot" in the 1932 World Series.
William Bendix...George Herman 'Babe' Ruth
William Bendix had been a bat boy at Yankee Stadium during the early 1920s,
and had personally seen Babe Ruth hit over 100 home runs.
Bendix was fired from his job after fulfilling Ruth's request
for an order of 15 hot dogs and sodas before a game.
After consuming the huge order, Ruth developed gastritis,
and was unable to play that day, resulting in a Yankee loss.
