In Fall 2019, subscription video streaming services, Apple TV+ and Disney+ will debut. More media conglomerates will join them in 2020 and beyond. Consumers will have bevy of choices, as every major entertainment company will soon have its own dedicated streaming service to remain competitive.

Each streaming service needs to differentiate itself by programming unique episodic series that not only entices viewers to join, but to retain existing subscribers. In a world where "content is king" and cord-cutting is commonplace, having at least one series that viewers consider indispensable is a must for every network. These tent-pole series allow subscribers to justify the cost of a subscription. They fuel the growth of the subscriber base and subsidize other series that fill out the programming line-up. Entertainment empires have been built and lost on success or failure of franchises like these.

Over the past few years, record syndication pacts have been inked for "The Simpsons" and "Friends". In 2018, Netflix viewers spent more time streaming "The Office" than any other show. "The Office" likely would have broken both records, but seems homebound for the NBCUniversal streaming service launching in 2020. As the number of subscription services multiply, the feeding frenzy for top-tier shows will only become more fierce and more vital. As the hypothetical head of a digital subscription streaming service, which of these episodic franchise series would you most like to secure exclusive rights* to as your #1 tent-pole series? * exclusive rights include any prequels, sequels, spin-offs or franchise related series

Netflix vs Disney: A Year of Warfare Likely Will Escalate In 2019
Netflix vs Disney+ Showdown
Both seem to be positioning controllable episodic series like pieces on a chessboard.

'Good idea. 'Tough choice, although I've narrowed it down to four, lol.

May I suggest a few small edits? (in bold below: just two apostrophes and a comma)

It seems like every media conglomerate either owns a streaming service or plans to launch one in the near future. A recent bidding war for exclusive streaming rights reportedly escalated the cost of "Friends" to nearly $100 million for a single year. When "The Office" episodes' current contract expires, the speculation is that they will fetch an even higher price. "The Simpson" episodes' ten year FXX deal cut five years ago for $750 million now looks like a relative bargain. In a world where "content is king" and cord-cutting is commonplace, having a series that viewers cannot do without is a must. These tent-pole series help justify the cost of a subscription all on their own. They are crucial to growing a subscriber base and funding a media empire.

I edited the actual visible introduction a bit more and might have been able to cut 1-2 lines of text. I deleted all the hyperlinks to news articles on the topic which represented at least 8-10 lines of hidden text, I suspect this is being counted in the total. The poll editor isn't likely differentiating between the actual length of introduction and the visible length. That should slice another 1/3 off the total introduction length. I don't have word to get actual count, but would try it as written now or more aptly as constructed.

Thanks, I appreciate the extra work. I think it is pretty likely that the hypertext link text counted in the total, which pushed it from being just a bit long to thinking it was excessively so.

Urb,

I'm not updating your original post in order to keep the links that you had to remove in your list / poll.

That's fine. I guess the issue with the length was with fitting it into the featured poll box and not the hyperlinks. Good to know, moving forward, it looks 24 lines is the maximum and format spacing counts too. i did a re-push, but I am fine, if you want to wait until it moves out of the featured poll box, before re-pushing it.

PS. It looks like it barely got in under the line limit.

The subject matter of the potential poll seems rather important, on account of the description.
