Problem with the search bar

It seems that in the past week or so the search bar behavior has changed. Previously when typing in a title, you could use the arrow keys on the keyboard to a suggested name or title, click enter and it would open in your current tab. I loved that, and used it all the time.

Now; you can still use the arrow keys to navigate, but now the results pops up in a new tab, with the search left open in the originating tab. THIS IS ANNOYING AS HELL!!! Clicking the result with the mouse still opens the page in the same tab, which is as it should be, but being forced to move my hand away from the keyboard simply to click the mouse instead of 'enter' is extremely annoying, and should be unnecessary.

Please set this behavior back to how it was before, or - if for some insane reason people actually prefer this - give us an option to turn it off in the user settings!

I submitted this same issue, so I'm with you.  I also mentioned that (at the time, but it might be fixed now) the window didn't scale to my monitor size and when I click'd on a preview it would open and play with the sound off, necessitating me to scroll down and turn the sound on.

Hi both,

So that we can look into this further, can you please provide us with the following information?
  • Your browser name and version number
  • Do you have any pop-up blockers/add-ons/extensions installed on your browser?
  • Example searches and which results selected in your search suggestions (provide as many examples as you have seen where this occurs)
Thanks in advance. We look forward to assisting you further.

I usually use Chrome. Probably different versions on different computers, the one I'm on right now is 79.0.3945.79. The current computer has the following add-ons installed: Adblock Plus, Back to Backspace, Shortkeys and The New Tab, other systems have different add-ons. I'm pretty sure I saw it in Internet Explorer without any add-ons on a computer as well.

Searches I can recall: The Interview (2014), Cats (2019), Mr. Robot (2015), Psycho (1960), American Psycho (2000). It affected all searches, really.

However, as of right now (within the past couple of hours), the search bar works as it should again, opening hits in the same tab when clicking enter, so I guess you've changed something. Thanks for that! I hope it stays this way!

Hi Claire.  I actually have another post in Get Satisfaction about this same topic.  Now... I noticed this AM  and again just checked and it seems fixed, i.e. if I arrow down to the correct movie from the search results and press Enter, it now opens in the same tab, where in the past it opened a new tab; however, again, in the past it would open in the same tab if I left clicked the selection with my mouse.  The only remaining issue is that when I click on the right facing triangle to open the preview (and the preview does also now open in the same tab with an, "X" in the upper left to close the preview and return/expose the underlying previous tab), I have to again click a right facing triangle to get it to play... why didn't the 1st triangle just open the preview and auto play it like it used to?  Interestingly I use Firefox, latest version, and since you sent this I also went to imdb.com in the Google/Chrome browser, and whatever problems it might have had or not had, my only comment is that I see a dissimilar page (not completely different, but different) than in Firefox.  Try it yourself, although I'm sure you're aware.

Thanks to you both. Our engineering team did confirm that this issue has already been resolved.

Let us know if we can offer any further help.

Claire, thank you.  I do still wonder why they have put an extra step in the preview selection.  When I open the imdb page for a movie and then click on the preview play triangle it opens but doesn't play.  In Firefox, I have to click another play triangle, which I didn't have to do before in Firefox.  Doesn't make sense!  I in Chrome when that 1st play triangle is clicked the preview opens and starts playing?!

Hi Mike,

I'm not currently seeing the same behavior in Firefox. Can you please confirm your browser version number, and the title where you're experiencing this issue?

Thanks in advance.

Curious.  Firefox ver 72.0.1 (64-bit) in Windows 10 Pro. First at the top of this morning's Instant Watcher list for Netfilix, "The Tourist", and checked again in, "Unforgiven" which my brother finally watched... it only came out in 1992 ! ! !

BTW, in Chrome, when I click on the preview it opens and plays in the same tab but a new Window which I have to click the back arrow (instead of the X in Firefox's preview); but, that's informational.  It's OK with me, i.e., back arrow or X  no extra steps or multiple tabs both of which are all resolved now.

Hi Claire,

I wanted to take a sec to thank you so much for the help and follow up.  You really stand out as an exception.

I know you (or the engineers) didn't make the changes just for me or Cartman.  There were probably a multitude of requests.  Thank you for your individual attention.

 Hi Claire,

I'm back... :-) I see they went with having to use the back arrow after clicking to view the preview as opposed to, was it opening in a frame with an, "X" to close the preview and return to the original page?
I previously said, IMHO, it was OK with me but there's still some things I'd like to vote on.  This first one has got to be something they will fix, yes, "Fix", need to fix.
*When I click on the preview to view, it opens and starts playing (Yay!), but sound is still muted.  Doesn't make any sense at all.  That has got to be something that was overlooked... did I say it doesn't make any sense?
*Today after clicking to view the preview for, "Mississippi Grind" (2015), which showed it would be :23 seconds, and below (before clicking on it) I scrolled down (common thing to do) and saw there were 2 other previews, one at 2:33, and the other for 2:31, so here we go - the :23 preview opened and then automatically opened the next one (common), but it was different, it was a 3:15 featurette about the movie with snippets.  I didn't appreciate that being snuck in on me.
*With this new feature of clicking the back arrow I have found that I go back through each of the previews that I have watched on the same movie before I get back to the original page which offers all the info on the film.  Many times I like to click back through the movies I've looked up for one more quick view of ratings, etc. - this puts a damper and an aggrevation on that.
*Additionally if I had to search, "All titles" for a movie because it didn't show in the drop down that shows a list, I have to back arrow through those also.

I'm starting to think this is another instance of improving a product to the point where it is no longer what we knew and loved.  Incidentally I've been using IMDB for ± 15 years, but just recently actually became a member, FYI/FWIW.

Please help in whatever way you can to get them to liste, or as I said to make my votes known.
