Live Poll: What is the Best Song From a Non-Musical Movie?

Pretty much all movies feature songs, but that doesn't mean they're musicals. A popular song (sometimes written specifically for the movie, sometimes not) is usually played once or twice, and usually whenever we hear that song, we think of that film. Which one is your favorite tune?

I know this is a bit off the subject, but this music is beautiful.  It's Separate Ways by The Vitamin String Quartet.  All the other stuff they do is awesome, too!  (This really isn't product placement, I honestly want people to hear this!)  :)

For your consideration: "Save the Best for Last" by Philip Galdston, Jon Lind and Wendy Waldman, sung by Vanessa Williams, featured in Definitely, Maybe.

I would suggest something from one of the Deadpool movies, but there are so many wonderful soundtracks in them, my favorite of which seems to be "In Your Eyes" by Peter Gabriel, featured in Deadpool 2.

I'm trying to think of songs that are not featured in a whole lot of movies, though.

Highlander (1986): I honestly can't choose between Queen's "Princes of the Universe", "It's a Kind of Magic" and "Who Wants to Live Forever" (not to mention "Don't Lose Your Head" and "Gimme the Prize" being practically of the same great level).

That scene in Deadpool 2 is actually a take-off on the original scene from Say Anything. It's like one of the most famous film scenes in which a hero tries to win their lover back. I recommend you list it under Say Anything.

I am quite puzzled by that poll (not in a negative way). I wanted to respond but I was afraid it would be one of these indigestibly long posts. I'll try to make it short.

First of all, when you say "all movies feature songs but they're not all musicals" (I'm paraphrasing), you're just stating the obvious. When we think of memorable songs, some pretty iconic ones come from non musical movies: "As Time Goes By", "Mrs. Robinson", "Moon River", "Que Sera Sera", "Raindrops Keep Falling On My Head", "Unchained Melody", "Everybody's Talkin'", "High Noon"... and so on and so forth.

I'm not saying your initial assumption is wrong but it just misleads itself because songs have always been integral to cinema's appeal and the  association of "movies" and "songs" is so broad that even by excluding non-musicals, your list would be endless.

Seriously, there are many good inclusions in your list but I was surprised by the inclusion of movies like Maleficent, Tron Legacy or Brave among undeniable classics like Ghostbusters, The Bodyguard or Rocky III, not saying these movies are random choices, but songs-wise, they didn't reach that "classic" status yet... at least have Frozen instead of Brave. By the way, even Top Gun and Terminator 2 were misleading, to be honest, I expected "Take My Breath Away" and "Bad to the Bone"...

I think the "core-idea" of this poll is interesting but it needs some re-working because if you have to ask us about the best songs from non-musicals, then consider every field where you can find strong contenders (of course, these categories overlap a little):
- Oscar-nominated (or winning) songs
- Pre-existing songs that became standards or their respective movies' signature songs
- Pre-existing songs that became parodied countless times (Tom Cruise's dancing to "Old School Rock'n'Roll",  the Pulp Fiction's song "You Never Can Tell" or "Stuck in the Middle With You" from Reservoir Dogs)
- Classic opening credits songs (you can't have this poll without 3 or 4 James Bond's hit-songs in my opinion)

To put it simply, you need another parameter, just one, it can be "Oscar-winning", "AFI-listed" (check this list:  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AFI%27s_100_Years...100_Songs), it can be "from the last ten or twenty years" or it can simply ask for our personal choice and make it a subjective list but there should be an extra key-word. Good luck!

Thank you for your feedback!  Actually, "Take My Breath Away" is on the list.  I'm still working on the list, so I will be adding more.  I considered adding "Bad to the Bone" from T2, but thought that maybe it was used in too many other films (but maybe not).  I stuck with "You Could Be Mine" because it was officially made the movie's 'theme'.

OK. I just think you should concentrate on what makes the song memorable because otherwise, any suggestion will be fine as long as it's a song from a non-musical. How do you define a song that whenever you hear it, you immediately think of THAT film. Should that movie be old enough to be considered a classic? Should it be a song associated to a classic movie scene? Should it be an Oscar nominated song? the film's main theme? etc.

ACT_1, that is an interesting question. Movies by Soviet director Leonid Gaidai are rarely treated as musicals, but each of them has quite a few music numbers built-in in the structure of a film and more often then not sung (or lip-synced) by actors.

? ?
Can the characters hear the music to sing and dance  = musical
If the characters can Not hear the background music ... not a musical

well, then...
There could be a party scene in a non musical
where folks are dancing to the music
from a record or live band
.

And I'd suggest to leave only one song per film. E.g. "Top Gun", I like both Kenny Loggins and Berlin but the latter was and still is more popular. Moreover, "The Bodyguard" includes 3-4 hits of Whitney Houston...
