If I understand it as about hard fighting but unluckily characters:
Al Bundy - Married with children - Episode: A little of the top
Homer Simpson - nearly every episode
Lionel Cosgrove - Dead Alive
Donald duck - Nearly all Huey Duey and Lewey episodes, every chip and chap episode - The shortfilms
Holly Martins - The third man
Alex Murphy - Robocop, Robocop 2
Sam Bell - Moon
Andy Dufresne - Shawshank Redemption

Well, I don't know if Sandra in Miss Congeniality or Kim Basinger in L.A. Confidential fit. It's up to you what character you wanna put in. I'm just doing suggestions. ;) If they don't fit for your idea, it's up to you to leave them out. Greetings. :)

What do you think about Katherine G. Johnson from 'Hidden Figures'
or Aibileen Clark from 'The Help'? Do you think they would fit?

Suggestion: Luther Van Damme and/or Hayden Fox from Coach.
Luther had good intentions but always ends up in trouble. Once to save the team from a plane crash he dreamed about, he booked them on a miserable train ride. He brought a monkey to the office and it bit Hayden, resulting in the worry that it might have a disease; they were quarantined.
Hayden had his share of things like that, too. His relationship with friends or family would go awry because of his worries or quirks.

I think the poll needs reworking, the idea is big enough to be split in two: one for movies and another for TV characters. Besides, from the title and the introduction, we may think the poll deals with poor schmucks who never get a break, so it's surprising to see a guy like John McClane who, by every cinematic standard, is a badass hero, of the "ordinary" type but far from the "lovable loser" archetype.
It's an establishing element of the hero to either be the "right person at the wrong place" or the "wrong person at the right place" but in their case, when they try hard, they eventually succeed. The original idea is good but the list is a kind of a mixed bag.

I see the term Character is used in the poll description, and the target "Hard Luck", but the same time I see no reference to any Archetypes. I just wonder because didn't know that the polls should automatically group or ungroup titles according to archetypes whenever the author use "Character" in a description...
Anyway, I have no success in searching "lovable loser" in existing classifications of archetypes, nor the shortest one, neither the extended one in its varieties: 1, 2, 3...
ElM., your idea for "lovable loser" as an establishing element of a hero to either be the "right person at the wrong place" or the "wrong person at the right place" is pretty good for a bag of two separate polls, but I see no reason why it should be done instead and not in parallel with this current poll. The latter aims no such question at all, or should it be? Why?

Mmm, because I didn't look at it with the right angle... I get the point about John McClane, it was just the "try hard" that got me confused, I didn't feel like McClane tried to never get into these situations, but yeah, it can work.
Still, it's better not to mix between TV and movie (I think) and for Clouseau, I recommend Peter Sellers instead of Steve Martin.

I totally agree that The Pink Panther remake is a big looser comparing to its original, with no regard to Steve Martin. But I'm not sure would it be better to option the original in this poll... Maybe Steve Martin is even better to show the Hard Luck )))

Narni, I'd like to but I really have no chance to make a final choice between Charlize and Sophie, Jessica and Alicia, and so on. They are so great but so different, even when seem alike as Grace and Rosamund. That's why no suggestions of mine for such polls, but I vote there choosing between what options are closer to my LOVE.
And I hope such poll is going to be better when you direct it ;)

Great poll suggestion! One of my first thoughts was Dexter Morgan from "Dexter", but Debra Morgan probably makes more sense, considering Dexter is an anti-hero and a serial killer. Still, living the life the only way he knew how to while a lot of things point that he was not a complete psychopath and might have been adjusted more to society makes him a tragic character.

Don't forget about how many of Debra's boyfriends end up dead or were serial killers too.

Wrongway Feldman was a pilot who showed up on Gilligan's Island, but of course his visit did not help the castaways escape. (Typed without help from Google - guess I watch a lot of T.V.?) :)
