Live Poll: There Will Always Be One And Only One...

Being the main protagonists of quite enduring franchises, these characters have been played by many actors (at least, more than two), but there's generally one version that strikes as the most iconic, the one-and-only, the ultimate one.

So, it may be a little subjective and some options are more undeniable than others, but if you had to voice your personal sentiment: as far as you're concerned, there will always be one and only one...

excellent list elmo...great choices...

only one i would question and that is sherlock holmes...i would think basil rathbone is the one and only and always...

but i really loved your addition of the original animated spiderman...could never get into the newer animated versions...(what's with the big eyes?...ha-ha)...

as far as a vote goes, along with spiderman, poirot is perfect, bond is perfect, superman is perfect...so many perfect choices...

again...great gig...

Thanks,

To be honest, I'm not 100% sure about Sherlock Holmes so i'm quite open on it.

And there's another tricky one: Dracula: Bela Lugosi or Christopher Lee?

Yeah, I'm not even sure I should add characters who've been played by 3 different actors, there's always an "undeniable" one. If the list gets long enough, I'll certainly change the parameters.

As for Clouseau, wasn't he played by Peter Sellers and Steve Martin only? Then, it's hardly a choice, it's like asking who was the best Mr. Spock or Willie Wonka :)

I guess people are more partial to Rathbone, all right

If only two people have played the character doesn't that seem like they should be included? Otherwise you would have thousands of options.

I think it reads better if you put XXX and HE is XXX, not that. You are speaking of a person, not a thing.

The photo for 16 is dropping.

FYC:
Doctor Who?
Anna Karenina - Greta Garbo (1935)
Ann Darrow - King Kong - Fay Wray (1933)
Bruce Banner/The Hulk - The Incredible Hulk (1978-1982) - Bill Bixby/Lou Ferrigno
Elizabeth Bennet - Pride & Prejudice - either Jennifer Ehle or Keira Knightly (my pick)
Selina Kyle AKA Catwoman - Batman Returns - Michelle Pfeiffer
Willy Wonka - Gene Wilder
Lois Lane?
Tom Ripley?
John Watson?
Santa Claus/Kris Kringle - Miracle on 34th Street (1947) - Edmund Gwenn
Cinderella?

Jen,

I would argue against The Doctor. Originally, the BBC considered Doctor Who (1963) a program to educate children on history. However, when William Hartnell decided to leave the series the producers introduced the concept of regeneration. All of the actors play the same person but during different parts of The Doctor's life.

That being said, I will always consider Tom Baker to be The Doctor.

I can't speak for Who since I've never watched the show but if the 'essence' of the characters is to be played by different actors, I don't know if he's fit for the poll. And how about the Hulk?

Lol, all these interrogation marks? I thought the question was pretty clear

Just one character per franchise, the lead, the one that appears in every movie and who's not the sidekick or the love interest (so no Lois Lane, no Watson, no Catwoman, you might have noticed there was no Joker)

Willy Wonka only played by 2 actors, so it doesn't work for the poll.

Santa Claus, Cinderella or Jane Austen characters weren't exactly like Sherlock Holmes or Hercule Poirot, they were always played by one actor or actress, while the others were associated with many actors who embodied the role more than once, if I add these, then I would also to add Mowgli, Robinson Crusoe, Oliver Twist, Ebenezer Scrooge and Jesus Christ.

Good call with Doctor Who and Hulk. But who's the actor for Doctor Who?

The question marks weren't questioning you. They were indicating that I didn't know who was "the one" for those options.

According to IMDb Willy Wonka has appeared in 28 titles.

Now, I'm stuck in that "Hulk" situation, in various websites, you have different opinions about the 'ultimate' Hulk, although the name of Bixby pops up more than often, he's never getting the top 1 spot (it's often Ruffalo) so I don't know what to do.

Same with the Doctor. Any help from a fan would be great. Thanks.

ElM,

Regarding The Doctor, you could use the results of this poll:
Who is Your Favorite Doctor Who?
http://www.imdb.com/poll/HooFAORvpZs/results
David Tennant has 2,026 (or 48%) of the votes.

My personal preference is still Tom Baker, but he came in third with 395 (or 9%) of the votes.

Whose performance as Dr. Bruce banner or The Hulk was better?
Face-Off : Eric Bana Vs. Edward Norton Vs. Mark Ruffalo
http://www.imdb.com/poll/a3-KDcBlTdw/results
Mark Ruffalo has 581 (or 52%) of the votes.

My personal preference is Bill Bixby.
