I agree 100%, all the plots the world has ever seen can be boiled down to hundred or so premises. My vote would be for the Empire Story: Giant,  Boom Town, There Will Be Blood.

FYC I think your poll suggestion would be improved and more likely to become a poll, if you upgraded a few options with some better known or more iconic IMAGE examples. Maybe, even listing two or three movies as examples to illustrated your point. The newest movie on your list is almost fifty years old. A mix of movies from the past and present would be advisable. Here are THREE searches that may generate some ideas.

MOST VOTED WESTERNS

Thanks for all your work and for the suggestions. I added 3 examples to each option. Great idea! And I changed a few images, with also newer films.
I think the list is improved a lot. When you still have suggestions, I like to hear them.

Your Welcome, I like the end result, a good mix between classics, bug studio, indies and more modern westerns as featured and listed examples. Plus, I think it gives poll takers more movies to identify with or the ability to vote their favorite. Congrats, and the featured poll no less.

Can I offer a few modifications?
The whol list ignore the point that ranchers themselves tried to push out the sheepherders and farmers. A lot of movies deal with the war between farmers and ranchers. Amoungst them are "Shane" and "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valence"
Then there is the cattle drive stories - "Red River", "The Cowboys", "Open Range", the whole TV series and movie "Rawhide".
Then there is the smaller set of prospecting stories that deal with the goldrushes, oil booms, the troubles in prospecting, the troubles in getting to the Yukon, and people trying to steal the mine away or cheat the miners. I think I can name almost all of those here:
- Charlie Chaplin's "The Gold Rush"
- All 3 film versions of "The Spoilers"
- "The Treasure Of Sierra Madre"
- Disney's "White Fang" and "White Fang 2"
- "The Far Country" that also combined a cattle drive story in the first half of its plot.
- "North To Alaska"
- "Piant Your Wagon"
- "The Call Of The Wild"
- "The Road To Utopia"
- "There Will Be Blood" but that was more about empire building than prospecting.
- "Bend In The River" also involved a gold rush in its story before it turns into a revenge story.

Redemption story - a man with a checkered past tries to seek peace and redemption . That definitely was a part of "Shane" and "Bend In The River".

And at last, the option of 'A combination of any of the plot themes'. Why? Because it is seldom just one type of story. The best ones almost always combine them. I had mentioned a few already here. Here is one more. "True Grit" combines revenge and Marshall story.

Thanks for your suggestions. I agree with you, there are more stories than these seven. But I like to stay true to the theory of Frank Gruber. Otherwise (like your following messages) you can think of a lot more plots. Than maybe there is no end or it brings a lot of discussion.
And yes, most movies combine different plots. But still you can like one plot more than the other.

You can stay with this topic. But this got me thinking about prospecting, mining, and yes oil drilling which I consider as prospecting. I going to a poll on prospecting.

In a fair world, "The Treasure Of Sierra Madre" wins that hands down. One of my ancestors was a prospector in California and the Yukon, but he made his fortune selling picks and other supplies during the hey-day.

Oh, me giving a tip of the hat (aka: recognition and approval) to Australia and several films set in the outback that can be considered Westerns Aussie style.

- "Quigley Down Under" I love that one.

- "Australia"

and one I can't name but they use whips instead of guns and rope to herd the cattle.

And yes, I consider all the Mad Max movies to be future post-apocalypse science fiction westerns Aussie style. Well done.

Update - "Mackenna's Gold" (1969) for prospecting but it also mixs in outlaw , Marshall, and Cavalry and Indian stories too. But prospecting, gold fever, and searching for gold is the main theme of that story.

Hard to pick just one. But since you had used one of my favorite westerns as representative of "Revenge Story" (plus it had a bumpy train ride in too)., I guess I'll take "Revenge story".
