Dedicated to my all-time favorite band, who captured a vision and turned it into a dream.

The following bands have since their formation lasted more than thirty years. Some bands took time apart and were reunited, while others kept going continuously. Many have struggled through tough breaks and setbacks; members have come and gone; but they never lost sight of what they believed in, and so they held the dreams within their hearts, always remaining true to themselves along the way.

Which of these rock* bands that have lasted over thirty years is your favorite? Or, which one would you most like to discover?

*including subgenres progressive metal, progressive rock, heavy metal and hard rock

love this question...love this poll...love your list...and the fact that uriah heep is on there makes it perfect...

just two comments...one...journey is listed as a hard rock band when they are not even rock...they are a pop band at best but certainly worth listing...

the second thing is more difficult...genesis...you say in your intro 'they never lost sight of what they believe in'...so...does that mean you are refferring to the brilliant peter gabriel led genesis...or the crappy phil collins commercial led genesis...they are two very different bands...

Well, Journey could be a little hard rock sometimes; online I think they are listed as soft rock.

In fact, Journey has played all of those rock sub-genres:

Genesis is really problematic to follow the criteria because they technically hard to accomplish the first 30 year, then 10 years dead for public, then commercial step up... No matter Phil or not.

Thank you, rocky.

When I wrote the intro I strongly had Dream Theater in mind, and I realize the words might not apply to every band in the list. Even so, I would like to keep Genesis.

Journey are certainly not a pop band, but I changed it to rock instead.

Jessica, great poll!
However, one replacement says for itself.

In the initial list, all "Big Three" pioneers of the progressive metal are included, and there is no one band for punk rock.  I suggest The Cure instead of Fates Warning (#8).

And it would be really great to find a room for this unique rock band:
Red Hot Chili Peppers
I think they need no introductions )))
Moreover, they do deserve -- look at their soundtracks list (even if not complete).

Thanks

Thanks, but since I didn't list punk rock as one of the subgenres I included, I won't be adding any. Likewise, Red Hot Chili Peppers is more of a funk band, and don't really fit into this list.

And since this poll is a tribute to my favorite band, I think it's pretty obvious that I would include the big three of the prog metal genre. :)

Hi Jessica! This may be a stupid question and I may have overlooked it, but: "dedicated to my all-time favorite band" - which band?

And it's not a stupid question. I don't think it's very evident unless you are a fan, as I use references to song lyrics in the intro. I also put two letters in bold to make it clearer, but in a subtle way: Dedicated to... dt = dream theater
