The following bands have since their formation lasted more than thirty years. Some bands took time apart and were reunited, while others kept going continuously. Many have struggled through tough breaks and setbacks; members have come and gone; but they never lost sight of what they believed in, and so they held the dreams within their hearts, always remaining true to themselves along the way.
Which of these rock* bands that have lasted over thirty years is your favorite? Or, which one would you most like to discover?
*including subgenres progressive metal, progressive rock, heavy metal and hard rock

just two comments...one...journey is listed as a hard rock band when they are not even rock...they are a pop band at best but certainly worth listing...
the second thing is more difficult...genesis...you say in your intro 'they never lost sight of what they believe in'...so...does that mean you are refferring to the brilliant peter gabriel led genesis...or the crappy phil collins commercial led genesis...they are two very different bands...

Genesis is really problematic to follow the criteria because they technically hard to accomplish the first 30 year, then 10 years dead for public, then commercial step up... No matter Phil or not.

love this question...love this poll...love your list...and the fact that uriah heep is on there makes it perfect...Thank you, rocky.
When I wrote the intro I strongly had Dream Theater in mind, and I realize the words might not apply to every band in the list. Even so, I would like to keep Genesis.
Journey are certainly not a pop band, but I changed it to rock instead.

However, one replacement says for itself.
In the initial list, all "Big Three" pioneers of the progressive metal are included, and there is no one band for punk rock. I suggest The Cure instead of Fates Warning (#8).
And it would be really great to find a room for this unique rock band:
Red Hot Chili Peppers
I think they need no introductions )))
Moreover, they do deserve -- look at their soundtracks list (even if not complete).
Thanks

And since this poll is a tribute to my favorite band, I think it's pretty obvious that I would include the big three of the prog metal genre. :)

I'd say that it probably lacks Mashina Vremeni (formed 1969), The Residents (formed 1969), Yello (formed 1979), Depeche Mode (formed 1980), Front Line Assembly (formed 1986), Blue Man Group (formed 1986) and a few more... but there's literally nowhere tto fit them on the list already. Potential for a Part 2?..
On a mostly unrelated note: my own band, Errors in Geography, sort of exists for 11 years already... It basically formed with me and my close friend in 2008 and since almost evolved into a very odd collective, which never have been in the same room fully (although all members know each other), working from distance... Our main achievement so far is a video album, although we plan to release a few proper albums this year, as well... Sorry for the plug. It's just that I can't believe we still exist in 2019 and even produce new music. Oh, and we are actually named for the goof type on IMDb! :)

rocky-o, thanks! We usually distribute through Bandcamp but I was also considering other options lately, just in case and that case mostly being things like Spotify... Can't find the link for your album with title alone, unfortunately: if it is distributed through CDBaby it should be on places like YouTube Music and iTunes?

I've found your album! Looks fantastic! I love the idea of recording the tracks with genuine NY ambience. Totally goes into my "to buy" list (I tend to plan music hauls carefully because in Ukraine that same amount of money may be food for the week, so I choose best possible moments to buy me some music in hauls when finances are okay for that).

FYC:
My favorite band, REM (solid 31 years before retiring, although they still play together occasionally and they're doing a concert in the UK in July)

I think I also link REM with some of these other bands, too, because they covered Aerosmith's "Toys in the Attic" and Metallica and REM are big fans of each other, except that when REM did "Shiny Happy People," Lars Ulrich supposedly vomited, lol. I completely understand that impulse: they've been my favorite band since I was about 16 or so but I hate that song, even though I know even the music is supposed to be ironic. The only redeeming thing about it, besides the intended irony, is that REM went onto Sesame Street and performed "Shiny Happy Monsters" with a bunch of the monster-muppets.: )

i used to perform a piano instrumental which i wrote back in the 70's called 'peace'...many had heard it a billion times prior to november rain coming out, and when november rain did come out, everybody thought it was my song..,the music is identical...
and i'm not saying for one second that i think someone from guns-n-roses borrowed my song...it's just that it was a beautiful and sweet song when i wrote it first...
now that that's out of my system...let's get back to the fun stuff...
peace....

however i do have a vinyl album available now on cdbaby...it's called futility's last request...(and i actually was going to include some of my instrumentals including peace, but due to health issues it made it difficult to play piano or guitar...)
but this one does have some songs and some new york street poetry...and a whole lot of new york atmosphere...and it's kinda inexpensive which dont hurt either...
thanx for asking...

If the Moody Blues, REM, & Genesis make the list of "rock" bands, where's Fleetwood Mac, the Eagles, & the Bee Gees?

The Moody Blues and Genesis are progressive rock, and R.E.M. was added upon request.
Fleetwood Mac would probably qualify, but I would rather not remove any of the options in the list. I'm sorry.

The Queen and Pink Floyd are longtime favorites for me, though I don't love all of their songs. Iron Maiden is the band that turned me into a metal fan in my teen years, but I love their often thoughtful lyrics much more than their vocal performances.
I like a hand-full of songs from most of the other bands listed, though R.E.M. is among the few American bands that I take seriously. I loved "Bad Day" and their satirical take on the "Teflon whitewashed presidency" of Ronald Reagan. And I found "Everybody Hurts" to be a good reminder that you are not the only person with problems, and that you are not alone in feeling that (as the lyrics go): "Sometimes everything is wrong".

I had a very interesting conversation with my best friend about music which started by him saying that he's worried that most of the artists he greatly admires (and he's mostly listening to rock and metal, although he has a wide range) are either relatively old or dead and he can't pinpoint whether we have anyone of same power, energy and talent right now of our own age (26-27). It got me thinking hard about that and I quickly remembered that Ramona Andra Xavier (aka Vektroid, aka Macintosh Plus) is exactly my age while being an accomplished inventor of a genre hailed as one that revolutionized self-distribution in Internet in general, vaporwave. I really like vaporwave and I always use Xavier to motivate myself, even though such motivation is a bit double-sided. After all, she was 19 when she made the most known album of that genre. I'm 27 and I'm yet to do anything which might have any mark on culture yet, despite years and years of trying. Then again, maybe it's all about the process. Another agesake of mine, PilotRedSun, is notably reclusive and had fewer releases over recent years, despite being, in my humble opinion, one of the best animators and musicians of my generation, who already made an impact of pop culture which is more and more visible with years and having a slowly but surely expanding cult following...
