One of the last great comedy geniuses, unlike today, all good clean laughs too. When Mel Brookes and Dick Van Dyke go, that's  it for Planet Earth I guess? Thanks for the laughs Carl, hope they continue in the Spirit Lands!

This is such sad news. It's hard to imagine a world without Carl Reiner. 'Great job on the poll, Ed -- it's so thoughtfully and sensitively done with a really good intro.  It'll be hard to choose just one of his projects when voting.

May I suggest just a few very small edits to the intro? ('below in bold)

Isn't RIP a christian thing?  Waiting for Jesus to return and the soul is united with the body and go to heaven. Carl Reiner was born a jew. But he was a non practicing jew.  I think something like "May his memory be blessed"   would be more appropriate.

It would probably be best not to speculate on what is appropriate to commemorate the memory of an observant person of the Jewish faith. It would be best to have a Rabbi or someone familiar with Jewish customs resolve this question. However, until we have the good fortune to have someone with actual knowledge regarding this matter, this site looks like it provides some good guidance:

What is Shiva
In Judaism, the first period of structured mourning is shiva. The word "shiva" has different meanings across different cultures and in Hebrew it means "seven." Shiva, as it relates to Jewish mourning, is the seven-day mourning period for the immediate family of the deceased which consists of spouse, child, parent or sibling. ...

R.I.P. is a general term that has been "grandfathered in" to the English language and Anglosphere culture.

While its roots are (probably) Christian, I do not think any Jew, Hindu, Buddhist, Atheist or whatever would really take umbrage with the use of this acronym.

To NvanKerr:

While its roots are (probably) Christian, I do not think any Jew, Hindu, Buddhist, Atheist or whatever would really take umbrage with the use of this acronym.

As Dan said: "It would probably be best not to speculate on what is appropriate to commemorate the memory of an observant person of the Jewish faith."

In Hinduism:

Hindus (see Hinduism, who believe that the would does not die but movies on to reside in another body, do not use epitaphs in India or the United Kingdom. However, in the US Hindus in the late twentieth century began to seek ways to commemorate and identify the ashes of the deceased.
Encyclopedia of Death and Dying

In Islam:

Rest in peace is essentially a prayer asking God to grant you peace, tranquility and mercy after someone passes away from this life. In Islam this is not allowed when the deceased is a non-Muslim.

An Ayah of Surah Tawbah {9:113} instructs us to not make dua for those who have died upon disbelief. Prophet Muhammad صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ and his companions were converts, they had a lot of family & loved ones who were non-Muslims and did not accept Islam. What is allowed and one can do is make excessive dua for and dawah to non-Muslims and loved ones when they are alive.

The most common formulation is: Inna Lillahi wa inna ilayhi raji'un or (surely we belong to allah and to him shall we return)

In Buddhism:

R.I.P. is not prohibited, but you could say :

May they Find Peace

Also about Hinduism:

Now, here begins the problem. Hinduism does not have any concept such as that of rising of dead ones. Hinduism believes in reincarnation. It says that the cycle of birth and death are governed by the Karma of individuals. The deceased individual would take another birth based upon the Karma of his previous life. His/her soul starts searching for another body. So there is no rest and hence, the concept of RIP is not valid in Hinduism. Hinduism believes in Moksha that is liberation- Liberation from the endless cycles of birth and death. That’s why instead of using RIP we should say, “Om Shanti” or “Aatma Ko Sadgati Prapt Ho (May Soul attain Moksha)”. Sadgati means salvation or liberation. We always pray that may the soul get liberated from the cycle of life and death.
https://tfipost.com/2018/08/rip-hindu-moksha-01/

To make it shorter, we shouldn't use "R.I.P." when talking about a Hindu, or a Muslim actor.

PS: Sorry for the duplicate of my message above.

Cinephile,

"My" Rabbi says it is "probably acceptable" and stated that:

"We are seeking justice for all Israel. Go in peace and rest on your rest in peace, and stand for your fate at end time." [Emphasis mine]
is customarily stated at funerals by some Jews.

Regarding Hindus you are right, as they believe in reincarnation.

I never mentioned Islam.

I rescued your very thoughtful post from Get Satisfaction's spam filter. I have no idea why GS considers this spam and I am slightly horrified that it does.
