Peter Jackson's Middle-earth movies are one of the biggest financial successes in cinema's history having won nearly 6 billion dollars. They also have 37 Oscar nominations with 17 wins, including Best Picture for The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (the only fantasy movie that have ever won). Although there are some things that the fans are complaining. Which was in your opinion the biggest mistake in Peter Jackson's six movies about Middle-earth?

He made three movies out of one book

The Lord of the Rings was great in every sense, The Hobbit was lacking. Having characters from out of the book and making up storylines was a big mistake, but that was in part due to the need to make three movies, which could have been easily avoided by following Tolkien's story as it was.

Almost all of 'Return of the King'. I enjoyed the first 2 but by the 3rd one all I wanted was for Frodo & Sam to jump into the abyss along with the 'ring'.

Perhaps it should be clearer from the title that this poll is only about his Middle-earth films?
For instance:
Peter Jackson's Middle-earth Mistakes
(or something better, but it should include Middle-earth somewhere)

Typos:
...the only fantasy movie that has ever won)

#5: The appearance of characters who weren't in the books

And in #2, omission is a better word to use than disappearance.

Also, in the fourth entry (The use of CGI), are you referring to an overuse of CGI or its quality? It might be good to clarify that.

:)

Thanks.

More options to consider:

- Changing the initial plan for The Hobbit films, which was to have two films based on The Hobbit, and one film based on the Appendices

- Having Legolas do feats of heroism, which often defy the laws of physics. Examples: surfing on a shield/giant spider while shooting; killing a war oliphaunt single-handedly; jumping (and walking) on falling rocks.

- Adding some forced connections to link the two trilogies. Examples: Thranduil mentioning Aragorn to Legolas, having Gloin talk to Legolas about his son Gimli, adding an entire subplot with the return of Sauron.

- Experimenting with 48fps+3D format, on such a large-scale film series as The Hobbit trilogy

- Omitting other characters like Glorfindel and Prince Imrahil (could perhaps be added to entry #2?)

Off-hand, I can't put a finger on it but it's regarding the last film of the Hobbit trilogy.  It's a tonal and character shift that makes me think of idiot Michael Bay in the character development and screenwriting process.

I really enjoyed the first two movies of that trilogy... and was stunned into hating the final film.

Agreed. The Battle of the Five Armies is the weakest film of the series. PJ had many problems with the amount of time the Production game him because Guillermo del Toro was gonna direct the trilogy and then he left so they had to start from scratch and redesign the films from the beginning.

Some minor tweaks for your consideration.
Poll Description. My edit
You can use it if you like.
It reads aloud better and still says the same thing.
That's the process I use to edit my own work. I read it out loud to myself.

Peter Jackson's Middle-Earth movies are one of the biggest financial successes in cinema's history having earned nearly 6 billion dollars. They also have 37 Oscar nominations and 17 wins, including a Best Picture award for The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003). It is the only fantasy movie to have ever won an Oscar in this category, despite all the things that fans and critics alike complained about. Which was in your opinion the biggest mistake in Peter Jackson's six movies about Middle-Earth?

Read yours out loud. You can hear the difference.

FYC:
- Greatly expanding roles for some characters. Examples: Arwen, Galadriel, Azog, Radagast...

- Changing some major book plot points, just for dramatic purposes. Examples: Faramir deciding to take the Ring to his father; Ents initially refusing to fight; Elves choosing to fight at Helm's Deep; having Thranduil and the Wood Elves actually watch - and decline to help - as Smaug is burning down Erebor; having Bilbo and the Dwarves do battle against Smaug.

- Turning Gimli into a comic relief in the second and third film of the LotR trilogy (done because the initial comic relief duo - Merry and Pippin, got separated)

All the suggestions added. Thanks! Although I think that most of the changes in Hobbit like the expanding the roles of Galadriel, Radagast and Azog or the Hobbit battle against Smaug are results of the three movies he decided to make and he needed to cover time. It's impossible from a book with 300 pages to make three movies with 2,30 hours long without making any changes.

True, but it's good to have several options to choose from.
Thank you for adding the suggestions.
