I always considered 1994 one of the most fruitful years in the 90's in terms of movies. There was an astonishing number of everything from beloved classics and mainstream blockbusters to hidden gems.

I wanted to suggest this on September, not only because I love 1994 like everyone else, but also because it was a "homepage guarantee"... then I had some scruples because it's "your thing" and I felt like I would be stealing your idea. Not surprised that you don't wait till 2019, some might have suggested it all the way...

What's this? You mean movies used to have stories? Jeez, I'd forgotten that. Hardly any special effects in any of them, but movies you could still watch in another 25 years. Why can't they write movies like these today?

LOL!  You said it Rob!!!  Movies now either have no plot at all or they try to explain boring stuff too much.

LOL!  Yes, as far no plot.  Mission Impossible: Fallout as far as too much explaining.  :)

I can understand where that is coming from, but I'd rather respectfully disagree: we do have a lot of movies with good stories in them, it's just that most of the time they're struggling through productions and don't get nearly as much finances as they should.

Oh yes, I agree with that!  There are plenty of great movies now - I was super impressed in 2018 with a lot!  The problems seem (to me) to be with the SW and superhero and "trying-too-hard" projects.

As a fan of superhero genre I will be the first to admit that abundance of such is not making any favors to that genre in terms of quality. Look at large superhero releases which are 25 years old: The Shadow, The Mask, The Crow, Timecop, Blankman - very different movies with distinctive styles, drastically different approaches and somehow each of them holds up greatly today, giving quite a few of the examples which are from like last year a run for their money. At least in my subjective case. I still find some of the modern superhero movies very much enjoyable, but those which grip me enough to really like them and want to rewatch once in a while are scarce. It's particularly odd that many critically panned and cautiously received movies fair better with me then those which get all the box office and critical praise.

SW - Star Wars?

Tombstone and Wyatt Earp.
Hollywood should concentrate on doing something different
A Ghost Busters Re-Boot Again!!!
We just had one.
Next thing will be re-boots every 6 months.
It'll be like the cell phone update obsolescence syndrome idiocy.
Where are the new ideas?
Indy that's where.
Problem is the studios just are doing what they are doing based off of modeling and statistical data projections for income.
Make movies from the heart and the dollars will follow.
Making movies based on data is a pyramid scheme formula that is destined for collapse.

Nikolay: No offense if you like superhero movies, lol!  I enjoy some too - I found Justice League and Infinity War to be quite fun.  Yes, SW is Star Wars.  I totally relate with the "cautious" movies being good and "jackpot" movies being mediocre.

Ed: Make movies from the heart and the dollars will follow.  Can I put that on a pillow?  Or frame it?  Not being sarcastic; great phrase!!!  Yes on the no new ideas.  Opinion: European fantasy movies way better than American:

Bah, I got used to it since I was a teenager.  Several films which I find well-scripted and nuanced in their portrayal of characters fail to attract an audience and are savaged by critics. While several cookie-cutter, "strictly formula" films with poorly developed characters get a lot of praise and become critical darlings.

The one think I have learned is to distrust the critics.

All these silly Star Wars & Superhero movies just keep replaying these same plot lines over & over with different characters, but somehow they seem to drag each tale out an extra 30 minutes. By the end you're cheering for the villain because you just want it to be over. Why are they still making Jurassic Park movies? They've done all the real dinosaurs, so now they're having to invent new ones. Seems easier to create a new monster than it is to create a good story.

Thank you so much for saying this!!!  Not many people agree with me about SW and superhero movies being "silly."  And yes on the Jurassic movies - Jeff Goldblum is old and we don't care.  :)

BTW, here's the link to my IMDb reviews.  You might agree with some of them.  :)  https://www.imdb.com/user/ur89518905/reviews

As a superhero fan, I could not agree more with you. One of the better aspects of the superhero genre is to see the characters (heroes, villains, and anything in between) in relative moments of peace, and exploring who they are behind the masks and the uniforms.  What do they care about? What dreams inspire them, what traumas haunt them, how they interact with each other and the world at large, etc.

Most of these films go straight for action scenes, battles, and explosions. The dialogue is forgettable, and the characters lack depth. Why should we care about these people?

Thanks for saying that, lol!  Some people think I must just "hate superheros" because I'm not usually into their movies.  But this isn't necessarily true - heroes are awesome if the movie is simply made right!!!  Two superhero films I do like are Justice League, Spider-Man 3 (the one with Tobey Maguire) and Infinity War was okay.  All three of those films had great action, but took breaks to explore character stories - and not the slow, boring ones.  Real, genuine ones that made you root for the hero more.  Studios, please make more like Spider-Man 3.  :)
