I know my first two would be Three Colors: Red and Salaam Bombay! but I'll have to look through the 52 page-list of films that I've seen to jog my memory for the rest. Once I have the time to look, it won't take long. I really like this idea.

Oh, I'm assuming you mean just feature films? (No shorts, for example; what about documentaries?) 'The Red Balloon' would be on my list, too, if it weren't a short.

The idea was feature films, but I don't have any objection regarding documentaries or short.

Edit: But Yeah, I think it'd be nice to have only feature films. Thank you.

Update: Title Update

Old Title: IMDb Poll Board: Top 10 Foreign Films

New Title: IMDb Poll Board: Top 10 International Films

It'd be nice if an admin can edit this conversation's title and replace the word "Foreign" with "International".

Thank you.

Wow, was this difficult. #6 - #10 changed films and changed in order so many times: it was a mess, lol. I really like this poll, though, and I enjoyed putting my list together -- & I love so many of the other lists, too. : )

  1. Three Colors: Red (1994, French)
  2. Salaam Bombay!  (1988, Hindi)
  3. Raise the Red Lantern (1991, Chinese: Mandarin)
  4. The 400 Blows (1959, French)
  5. Camille Claudel (1988, French)
  6. Wild Strawberries (1957, Swedish)
  7. Summer 1993 (2017, Spanish)
  8. Farewell, My Concubine (1993, Chinese: Mandarin )
  9. Kedi (2017, Turkish)
  10. Capernaum (2018, Arabic, Amharic)

Wait hol' up...

Kedi (2016) is a documentary.

Can you please replace it with a feature film?

Thank you.

You should be more explicit with rules (written out) if you feel the need to enforce them.

On the other hand, I'm not sure why this particular rule should be a hard-fought one. It doesn't dilute or pollute the rest of the list with its presence. In fact, the exclusion of documentaries would only limit some people from actually putting a list together in the first place. Their inclusion being so infrequent, can you give us a reason why they shouldn't be included in the first place? Even documentaries get theatrical runs. Kedi was one of them. I saw it in the movie theatre myself. Limiting qualified documentaries to theatrically released films will at least keep out television exclusive projects. That seems to me (and hopefully others) as a reasonable compromise.

Oh, I left a short film out because I knew you wanted feature films but this was a documentary feature. Like Stephen, I saw it in a theater. I even have the poster from the theater that still somehow smells like popcorn, lol. I've never not thought of feature documentaries as feature films.

If you don't want to use documentaries, however, you can replace it with My Neighbor Totoro, I guess, (or Amores Perros, Tokyo Story or 8 1/2 - any of these would be fine) but I'd also suggest noting, in the intro (or right below the intro), that only feature length non-documentary films were considered.

If you decide to keep it, I've never seen the title listed as "Cat." I know Kedi means "cat" in Turkish but, even in the States, it was released as 'Kedi' and has 'Kedi' on the North American IMDb.

One last note: Salaam Bombay! is from 1988, not 2001.

Thank you for adding my list. : )

- Replaced Kedi with My Neighbor Totoro.
- Corrected the year of Salaam Bombay!
- Mentioned that only feature films are listed.

Sorry and thank you. :)

Stephen,

I created this PS 4 months ago; I was new here. I didn't know much about how to post a poll suggestion properly. I was still learning.

We (I and Ruby) had a little conversation regarding this, where I mentioned that I'd like to list feature films only. [ here ]

There are so many non-American (and non-English language) films out there; I thought even ten would be less. Hope y'all understand.

I try to be specific (about rules and other stuff) with my new poll suggestions tho. :)
