3. A Star Is Born (2018) (9/10)

Curious to know if you saw Avengers a second time yet. After my second viewing the high went down quite a bit.

No I haven’t yet but that’s interesting. I’ll admit that a first-time watch in a theatre with all the boys was a super exhilarating experience. I’m sure a second viewing of that ending as well would be hard-pressed to match the sheer shock and emotion that was endured the first time. But I’d like to see it again before Part 2 hits theatres.

I'm so ashamed, and just downright disappointed, that I haven't seen 'Won't You Be My Neighbor' yet: I heard such great things about it but mostly because I idolized Mr. Rogers as a child and adult, and he lived in my hometown so I waited on him once when I was waiting tables and he gave the keynote address at my (very small) college graduation shortly before he died. 'A modern day saint if there is one.

Interested to know what aspects of the movie you found more enjoyable. For me once the mystery was gone I was just waiting for the Thor scenes.

1. In den Gängen/In the Aisles (10/10) - it's rare to see a movie that feels so real and still has a story to tell.
2. Mission Impossible: Fallout (8/10) - we will wave about our canes in the future and say, "they don't make action movies like this anymore".
3. Halloween (7/10) - an antidote to Rob Zombie's remake.
4. Isle of Dogs (7/10) - cute, but Wes Anderson has done better.
5. 3 Days in Quiberon (7/10) - great performance by Marie Bäumer as Romy Schneider.

Ahh I missed the chance to give some commentary - love these thoughts Alb! Haven't heard of In the Aisles, I guess Western audiences aren't too exposed to it.

Commentaries are not required, after all :). But I'd love to read your thoughts.

I number Germany among Western countries, lol. But the movie won't have much exposure to international audiences, that's a safe bet. It wasn't even a big hit at home.

Yay, someone else has 'Shoplifters' as a top five. You and I both have that exquisite film and Roma on our lists and your 'The Ballad of Buster Scruggs' is on my list of top five 2018 films still to see. I hadn't heard of 'In the Aisles,' but because I've always respected your taste in film, it's on my to-see list. In fact, because it's your number one film, it's on my top five still-to-see but I wonder when I'll get a chance to see it. It's on my radar, though, which is my favorite things about these lists: I get to find out about movies I wouldn't know about otherwise.

I am not familiar with everyone's profile name on here, but to be added to the list you have to have a published poll or a frequent poster on get satisfaction.

That being said thank you for the picks and I also enjoyed Game Night a great deal.

Wow, this is so much more difficult than 2017. 2017 was such a great year for films, I though, but, so far, 2018 has been a bit tepid. I haven't seen most of the ones I really want to see and the most well-reviewed movies, yet, though, so that might really change my feelings about this year in cinema.

Mine will likely change, just like you said for yourself, but so far:

Summer 1993
Lean on Pete
Leave No Trace
Eighth Grade
Colette or BlacKkKlansman

Loved Eighth Grade too! Expected it to be great but Burnhan surpassed my expectations - the nuances and subtleties of growing up were all captured beautifully; I think a lot of hats off goes to Fisher as well for a lights out performance.

How was Colette? I talked myself out of going to see it in the theater as the trailer didn't win me over.

PS

My list has already changed. :)

I was moved but also maybe a bit underwhelmed, actually. If it weren't for the fact that the movie was somewhat personal for me and I just haven't yet seen a lot of the highly acclaimed or anticipated films of the year, it probably would not have made my list. I'm not certain of this but one of the reasons I may have liked it as much as I did is because I wanted to like it. I'm not sure but I sure do wonder.

Last year, I didn't see a lot of my favorite films of the year until December and I already have yet to see films that I couldn't wait to see that have been released in my city but I just haven't made it to the theater. Once I turn my students' grades in, I'm going to spend everyday at the theater, catching up. :)

Oh, and Kyle: indeed and 'exactly what you said. :)

It's interesting that last year my favorite film starred a child and now, this year, four of my favorite films so far have kids in the leading roles (mostly much older than the six-year old last year but still kids) and capture so many things about growing up.

Yees I know how much you adore The Florida Project - I think when a child is so impactful in a role(s), it creates such a profound viewing experience - captures so much about growing up so deftly, as you said :)

ND, I'll wait until I've finalized my list to make any changes, so it will change only once, but already 'The Favourite' has dislodged Colette and BlacKkKlansman, lol. And now that a whole lot of good films are being released, who knows what could happen. It's so exciting. : )

Isle of Dogs is probably my 6 or 7 right now and I think it is so far superior to Incredibles 2 that it would really be disappointing if the latter gets the Animated Feature Oscar this year. Haven't seen the Spider Man film though everybody seems to be crazy about.

These are my top 5 at the moment. I'll come back and change it if, well, things change... I've still missed quite a few that look good.

1. Annihilation
2. Paddington 2
3. A Quiet Place
4. Sorry to Bother You
5. Searching

Searching might get replaced by Roma. We'll see... I'm also hoping to catch The Favourite soon.

I still haven't seen Annihilation and I really want to see it. I went to the theater several months ago to see it and they told me that the day before was the last day : (. and that was the last theater to get it. That's happened to me a lot this year (for example, with Wildlife) - I've missed so many films that I've really wanted to see by a day or so.

Btw, good list, Sparse.

NDb, did you see Portman's 'Vox Lux?' I've read that it's one of her best performances but it wasn't released in my city.

I'm looking forward to Wildlife and Vox Lux both. I might not get to catch them in theaters, but they look good. I'm still kinda upset that Roma wasn't playing in theaters anywhere near me, though its greatness still shows on the small screen, even if it can't quite be fully appreciated there.

And Annihilation just came out on Hulu if you have it, at least in the U.S... Internationally it's on Netflix... it's all very confusing. Don't let me overhype the film for you though, it's good to go in fresh with an attentive eye. ;)

I still haven't seen about five films (that I'm expecting will be contenders for my list) because they just got to my city (Shoplifters) or haven't gotten here yet (If Beale Street Could Talk, Girl) but, in case this goes live soon, I made two changes before I've finalized my list - I said I wouldn't because I didn't want to deluge you with posts, lol, but in case it's time sensitive:

Disobedience (this is a 2017 movie but wasn't released in the US until April, 2018; it's my favorite of the year but if you can't count it, I'll put a sixth film at the end of the list)
The Favourite
Summer 1993
Leave No Trace
Eighth Grade
(Lean on Pete)

Thank you :)
