ElM: Here are a couple more suggestions:

Dalton Trumbo directed the adaptation of his own novel "Johnny Got His Gun."
William Peter Blatty directed the adaptation of his own novel "The Ninth Configuration" and also directed "The Exorcist III," the latter based on his novel "Legion."

I agree Maximum Overdrive is garbage but in fairness it can be hilariously bad at times. It's probably his worst film next to Sleepwalkers (which I think is slightly more amusing in a schlocky way).

Ah I always thought it was the book first... well you learn something new every day. I think because I know him so much as an author that again I thought it was based on one of his books.

Doesn't seem like Hellraiser was a novel, must have been an original screenplay, which isn't what the poll's about, there are so many directors/writers the list would've been endless.
