Poll Suggestion: Did Marisa Tomei Deserves Her Oscar for 'My Cousin Vinny'?

Back in 1993 Marisa Tomei won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress for My Cousin Vinny (1992). A rumor was spread back in the day that the presenter Jack Palance was drunk and he accidentally read the wrong name in the envelope. Do you think Marisa Tomei deserve her Oscar or one of the other nominees should have won?

Either she or Davis would have deserved it... this was the time comedic performances were taken seriously.

But tell me... what is the maximum number of seconds that passed without you thinking of Marisa?

Do you realize that she is 28 years older than she was in MCV?

Marisa is like wine, the older she gets the better she looks. She is 55 now still goddess though!

I agree that she's one of those people who gets better looking with age. George Clooney, Sandra Bullock, and Helen Mirren are like that, too, to name a few. And Tomei has always been a great actor but I think her craft grows as she does, as well.

I think she deserved it. I was a bit surprised too, but more that it went a comedic role rather than a dramatic role. She was perfect for the role and played it spot on, I doubt David could have pulled it off.

Vanessa Redgrave should have won.

My Cousin Vinny is a good film, but any of Howards End's performances are simply better than Marisa Tomei.

Howards End is a masterpiece, as well as a favorite film of mine, and a much better film than My Cousin Vinny but, in some ways, that can demand more from the actors, especially when the whole thing pretty much rests on two main characters. Redgrave was, as usual, exceptional but I don't think that makes Tomei any less deserving. Fortunately, time has been kind to Tomei and all those people who, at the time, didn't take her seriously, now can see that she is a genuine talent with a serious intellect and a serious commitment to her craft and to good material.

I don't agree. For me,  Tomei is a one-hit-wonder, she only had the luck of being a filler in 2009  and 2002 Oscars.

In the Bedroom, Before the Devil Knows Your Dead, The Wrestler, The Paper, Love is Strange, The Ides of March, The Lincoln Lawyer, etc... Three Oscar noms, three SAG noms, two Golden Globe noms, a regular on the awards circuit...  In a profession in which most actors, especially female actors who receive only 30% of the speaking parts that men do, even very talented and skilled ones, are thrilled if they get a small part in a barely known TV series, I'd say that's pretty impressive. I'm not sure what a "filler" means for two Oscar nominations for critically acclaimed performances in critically acclaimed films.

Hi ruby,
How is it that actresses get only 30% of the speaking parts? Is that a fact?

Anyway it is a lot easier an academy award to be given to someone who cries and/or screams in a drama film, so Marisa should've won.

Why don't you 'for the hey of it' write out the names and movies of the other actors nominated that year in the text of the list?

Not to diminish the value of this poll but wouldn't it more fun to keep it between us users who know how much a fan you are of Marisa... it's an interesting question but rather random for voters... out of all the Oscar wins, why this one in particular? And do we want to see a trend of polls asking all a very specific question, role or award win about a specific movie or show? Unless it's a very polarizing issue (were Rachel and Ross on a break? Was it all a dream? etc.) these questions work better as a JFF thing, conversation starters between us regulars ... exactly like the "Keating" poll, ( not to mention that you can only answer the question if you saw the other movies)

In the intro it's referred that this Academy Award win stands out from the rest of them because the presenter Jack Palance was drunk and there were rumors that he accidentally read the wrong name.

But that's clearly not how the cards and the system devised by PWC (which has been the Academy's accounting firm for 83 years) handled mistakes. If there was a rumor, it was based on nothing but a complete misunderstanding about how mistakes were handled. WE already know the system because of the Moonlight/La La Land debacle.

Any mistake that night would have been instantly reversed. Making the rumored premise ... moot. AKA Marisa Tomei did in fact properly win her Oscar (no matter whether her detractors thought she deserved it or not).

Of course she won properly her Oscar she was outstanding I am not denying that, I am just saying to Elmo why this Academy Award stands out from the rest of them, because of that rumor.

No of course not it's just a coincidence, I hardly make polls with Marisa Tomei or her character from 'My Cousin Vinny'. You are about to tell me that I make polls just to put her pretty face in the lists, that's absurd!
