I guess it's up to debate whether Goodfellas should be there, the 70s occupies a significant portion but so do other decades, and the climax takes part in the 80s (unless we consider Tommy's death as the high point of the film...). Maybe I'm just afraid it would take too many votes...

I think I've only seen a grand total of 3 ''gangster'' (as in ''organized crime'') films in my lifetime - Scarface, and Godfather 1 & 2.

Try "Goodfellas" and "Once Upon a Time in America"

Once Upon is on my watchlist for, like, forever. :-P
But I love Leone and Morricone, so I'll definitely give it a watch one day... if I manage to spare 4 hours of free time for movie-watching.

The main thing that stops me from enjoying gangster films (although I do really like Scarface and first Godfather - I didn't like Part II) is the failure to connect to any of the leading characters.

Good one. Tough choice. I love 'The Irishman' and Carlito's Way and Donnie Brasco are great.

You could include Birds of Passage, which is partly (mostly, I think) set in the 70s.
