Poll Suggestion: BLM: Black Lives Matter

Today we find ourselves at a sadly familiar crossroads, as the tragic killing of George Floyd once again reminds us of frightening racial inequalities affecting the Black community. We at IMDb strongly condemn all forms of racism and injustice.

We stand with people of color in solidarity, and we are committed to using our collective voice to help create a brighter, more inclusive future for all.

In this sad state of affairs, let's have a look at some of the films with a happy ending for a black character.

Which of these films where a black character wins is your favorite?

This poll is absolutely inflammatory in nature and will anger people on both sides of the issue.

This thread and the poll needs to be immediately ERASED!

I Know nothing about your country and it's politics, so I would NEVER step into a political quagmire that you have stepped into here.

Please respectfully. Request a removal of this thread, the poll, the list and it's title. It is a hotbed topic. It will only serve to anger the majority of those that see it.

Do you really want to be the cause of someone seeing this and taking some form of action based on your words?

I would not want that on my conscience!

Your poll title "Black Lives Matter" Is the problem.
I is a reference to questionable organization.
There is NO justification for this very poor poll suggestion.
NONE.
It is crass.
It objectifies.
Your movie selections are in bad taste.
You should immediately "Do The Right Thing"
Withdraw this. Your explanations for your so called justification for continuing this are falling flat. Using the tragic death of ANY individual as the basis for a poll in the manor that you have presented it is just plain wrong.
Please submit a request to archive this NOW!

The movies suggested and the premise is poorly executed.

'12 years a Slave' has a happy ending? C-mon. How blind can you all be.
The is no way that you can defend this pool, no matter how many statements are made.

This poll needs to be archived.

I shall post a daily log of what some backers of black lives matter are up to!
Todays episode of of Tucker Carlson Tonight (2016) (TV Series) Episode dated 4 June 2020 there was a segment that depicted an individual ( A Black Lives Matter supporter) harassing 3 women attempting to clean up the defacing (Spray painted Graffiti) of a building in Washington D.C. Those three woman were accused of being racists because they dared to clean up their city.

I'm sorry but the 5 people that have commented here on this are not informed enough to denounce this poll as a very bad idea.

Another note: The "Black Lives Matter Foundation" backs the abolition of funding by way of appropriations by all governmental forms. Yes. No taxes collected by any entity shall go to any law enforcement!! Oh did I mention that they want to empty all jails too! Yes. Fact!

Now as to your poll title............A very bad idea! Again. It references an organization that is for anarchy at it's core foundation.

Please request a closure of this poll.

Will update the news on BLM every day until you do so please.

Thanks

If Black Lives Matter were conservative, it would already be one of the most discredited and despised movements in American history. Can you imagine the elite Left’s reaction to a conservative movement built on a founding lie that has incited riots, inspired shootings of police, and correlated with an astounding and deadly increase in violent crime in America’s major cities?

It’s the latter point that will leave the most enduring legacy. Today the Wall Street Journal reported that 16 of the top 20 cities in the United States have endured year-to-date increases in homicide, with Chicago’s murder rate reaching levels “not seen since the violent drug wars of the 1990s.” And this increase comes after 2015’s troubling increase in murders. Together, the 2015 and 2016 crime spikes have left hundreds of black men dead in the streets, with women and even children victimized by stray bullets.

There’s emerging evidence that correlation may veer into causation, too. Months ago, the center-left website FiveThirtyEight found that Chicago gun violence spiked just as arrests decreased in the aftermath of the release of video evidence in the controversial Laquan McDonald shooting. “A similar decline in police activity and increase in violence occurred in Baltimore” in the aftermath of the Freddy Gray controversy.

This is the much-discussed “Ferguson effect,” the hypothesis that anti-police protests lead to decreased discretionary police activity and increased crime. The Ferguson Effect — first advanced by the Manhattan Institute’s Heather Mac Donald — was the most “plausible” explanation for 2015’s increase in violent crime, according to a Justice Department-funded study. The “other explanations [had] a difficult time . . . explaining the timing and magnitude of the increase.”

Indeed, the correlation between increased violent crime and public police controversies is so pronounced and obvious that liberal researchers such as criminologist Richard Rosenfeld, one of the authors of the study quoted above, are busy redefining the Ferguson Effect, claiming that “controversial police incidents” activate “longstanding grievances and discontent with policing,” and then “chronic discontent erupts into violence.”

Yet even under this theory, the malignant effect of Black Lives Matter is evident. It’s easy to activate discontent with lies, and if local and national activists keep saying, “hands up, don’t shoot” — the lie that launched the Ferguson riots — or falsely claiming that Charlotte’s Keith Lamont Scott was holding a book and not a gun when Charlotte police shot him, then the blame for the riots and violence that follow rests with them, not with police.

As a declaration, Black Lives Matter is simple, unarguable truth. As a movement, it’s poisonous.

Rather than ask (for them) the hard questions, all too many journalists are scrambling to minimize the tragic increase in homicide. They characterize the largest increases in decades as “slight” and consistently emphasize and re-emphasize that crime is still well below its historic highs. That is no doubt true, but the concern isn’t that we’re back in the middle of the crack wars; it’s that emerging cultural and political trends may be costing hundreds of lives.

Rarely have I seen more good people hoodwinked by a slogan, unaware of the radical and destructive organization and activists that lurk beneath. As a declaration, Black Lives Matter is simple, unarguable truth. As a movement, it’s poisonous.

#related#Black Lives Matter is one of the founding churches of the new religion of anti-racism, a secular faith that views every significant event or trend in the United States through the prism of race, and seeks to remake the nation from the ground up to purge it of its historical sins. Oddly enough, when boiled down to its essence, the new religion of anti-racism looks a lot like the older religions of Marxism and socialism, complete with hostility to capitalism and a destructive rejection of Judeo-Christian moral norms. Black Lives Matter just changes the pretext for revolution.

As the carnage increases, we’re still waiting on Democrats and leading progressives to muster the courage to denounce a movement that’s more radical than their party, more violent than their ideology. I expect we’ll be waiting a long time. Black Lives Matter still has its hold on the Left, and I fear that grip won’t loosen until there are more lies told and more bodies in the streets.

Retired African American Police Captain Killed Trying To Stop Looting
A retired St. Louis police captain was reportedly shot and killed outside of a pawn shop that was being looted during a protest on Monday night.

Police found former captain David Dorn, 77, outside Lee’s Pawn and Jewelry store around 2:30 a.m. Tuesday morning.

He was murdered right in the middle of a protest march by Black Lives Matter.
No one in the movement saw fit to stop the African American assailants from killing the African American retired police chief.

Please close this poll.
It is a very bad idea.

This list https://www.imdb.com/list/ls098491520/ by a user makes reference that IMDb has taken a particular position on a hot social topic here in he United States. While this position may be indeed IMDb's view, the user has no right to assume so, nor put his opinion that it is indeed your view. He states: "We here at IMDb strongly condemn all forms of racism and injustice"
I request that the list be deleted.

Also the list in my opinion is very insensitive in it's wording and the choices that it asks the list viewer to make.

Example: the user asks you to chose where, "The black character wins" is your favorite.
And one of the choices is '12 Years a Slave'. This is extremely insensitive. It is not in the spirit of racial equality.

Your poll is insensitive and crass.
It needs to be closed again.
If you can actually come up with a better poll idea, do it.
But this poll is just plain BAD.
Do Not use the George Floyd's name. He is not in entertainment.
He is a news item. Not an entertainment item.
A poll should NOT be created using this tragedy as a basis EVER!

"A movie with a happy ending for a black character" sounds a little off... because what it does is reducing the character to his ethnicity... which can only be relevant if it has a bearing on the narrative...

Secondly, you're mixing serious movies about racism with more lighthearted stuff... you have "Pulp Fiction" while I am not sure the film had a happy ending for Marvin... you have "Shawshank" a film that had nothing to do with racism... how about "The Nutty Professor while we're talking"?

And seriously even if the ethnic background played a role in the film, it doesn't sound quite right, I mean can you imagine a poll saying "a film with a happy ending for a white character" or "a film with a happy ending for a woman"... are movies where things end well for black characters such a rarity? It's too generic and it pretends that it doesn't often happen.

Just take any movie with a Black hero or heroine, any comedy with Black protagonists, any inspirational drama and they will have happy endings for Black people... given that even a sad ending can have positive implications.

As for the slogans and labels, as powerful as they are, I am not sure either that an entertainment platform is the right place, we live in a time where everything is turned into a hashstag, its for stuff like this that I feel totally disconnected...anyway that's another story.

This is the poll you should be making.
Not the negativity nightmare you created!

You may copy it exactly.
You have my permission.

An IMDb Boards Poll: All Lives Matter

With the recent senseless tragic death of an African American man at the hands of the Minneapolis Police Department, we must again face the fact that racism may play a part in some but not all peoples lives. Because of this action protests and rioting have resulted in more death and destruction. But not all people wish ill will against our brothers and sisters on this earth.

To remind us of this we have created a memorium poll for all the lives have been effected by all the tragedies worldwide committed because of racism.

These movies suggested by the IMDb Poll Board Members remind of what we can do when we set aside race and work together as one race. The Human Race!

Which inspirational movie is your favorite?

If not, I shall make this poll a suggestion at the top of the new day.
June 7 @ 00:00 UTC that is in about 10 and a half hours.
Thanks.

In my humble opinion, It would be best to stay away from any slogan crafted in the style of "X Lives Matter", substitute "X" with anything at all or everything. One major problem, in general, is that some lives matter more than others: some Black lives matter more than other Black lives; some White lives matter more than other White lives; some Mixed lives matter more than other Mixed lives; some Other lives matter more than other Other lives; some "cop" lives matter more than other "cop" lives; some "felon" lives matter more than other "felon" lives. For whatever reason, people don't want to admit that almost every human being is utterly incapable of valuing all human life equally. They like to pretend that a government may be capable, but they are mistaken. A normal human being will always value the well-being of friends over the well-being of strangers over the well-being of foes. Some people may have no friends, and some people may have no foes, but that is beside the point. Entire "nations" can have an enemy, whether by virtue of succumbing to attack patterns or by decree of the polity charged with "protecting" the those "nations". By the way, as we know, all lives cannot matter until X lives matter, and again, X can be substituted with anything or everything. We don't want to be the people to go crashing the rally of the portion of X advocating "X lives matter", to point out that all lives matter. On the filp side, of course, the "all power to all people" sort of crowds do not want their rallies crashed by any identity politics group who alleges that their "own" particular "group" is being disproportionately mistreated (by tyrants and felons) or ignored (by the indifferent or apathetic), through zero fault of its own. It's the provable facts that should matter most. This is really what both sides or all sides ought to understand. Just having enough of the provable facts is sadly more of a self-earned luxury than an unalienable right, though.

Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos expressed support for the Black Lives Matter movement by posting an email exchange with an upset customer.

In an Instagram post, Bezos posted a screenshot of an email from a customer who said it was “disturbing” and “offensive” that Amazon posted a message on its website in solidarity with the movement. The customer, whose name was blurred, wrote “ALL LIVES MATTER!”

Critics of the Black Lives Matter movement often seek to counter the phrase by saying “all lives matter” or “blue lives matter,” referencing fallen police officers.

“I have to disagree with you,” Bezos replied. And here's the rest of the message.

Stop defending the indefensible.
Will you close this bad idea of a poll with extremely insensitive remarks and very poor choices for  movies.
Your prose is just not up to the task.
Please listen to 15 Years above.
He only scratched the surface of just how bad the choices are.
If you would like I could pick apart 90% of the movies as being on the divisive side for the majority of the run time.

MY country needs to heal.
Your poll does not cut it!

Will you use my suggestion above?
It is well written and not very abrasive.
Please close this poll.
Please use my idea.
I implore you to allow this to happen.
You are not close enough to this to handle it.
I have a friend that is a policeman in the L.A.P.D. that is dark skinned who is of middle eastern descent who has had to try and help keep the peace. He has had racial slurs hurled at him that hurt me as much as him.
I have customers that cannot open their businesses because of COVID that are scared about looting.
I have African American friends that are protesters (Not Looters) that are angry.
This is where I live.
This hurts me that you think that somehow you know how to make a poll about a country that is in turmoil that you do not live in. I live right here. Take my advice please.

Your poll hurts. We as a country are hurting. Your not taking my advice simply because we do not like each other is ego driven. I have left you alone for months because of this dislike. I have made some positive suggestions to try a make up for these issues, but you have ignored me.

Please don't ignore me any further.
Will you close this and use my idea please.

Y'all may or may not be aware that Thomas Sowell, Clarence Thomas, Larry Elder, Glenn Loury, John McWhorter, Anthony Brian Logan, Brandon Tatum, Candace Owens, the Hodge twins, among many others of various descents (including and beyond the designation "Black" or "African") and slightly diverging viewpoints, would probably be able to debunk, to a degree, the sentiment but forth by people who claim, in the 21st century, that Americans of Caucasian descent have far less to worry about from committers of homicide (be it in self defense, cold-blooded murder or extrajudicial, be it committed by civil servants, military officers or ordinary civilians) than do Americans of Black descent.

So many control advocates, intersectionality theorists, cancel cults, "progressives", identity political pundits, social democrats, "underclass" fascists and Marxist-sympathizing capitalists ignore all the progress that the United States and all the States that comprise so have made since 1776, along with the triumph over the former empires of England, France, Spain and Portugal, all guilty (not necessarily equally) with the United States, Quebec, Mexico and Brazil, of carving out powerful nations at the expense of the inhabitants of the Americas who happened to arrive long before 1492 and who often had many of the same faults as the folks who arrived later. They have all made progress. If anybody should be particularly upset, it would be constitutionalists, the valuers of the tenth amendment, as progress has not always been toward the appreciation of freedom over safety, and individual identity over community identity, and private property over public property, and holding tax-paid employees of the public trust to a much higher standard than common folk.

Some of your posts come across as overwrought on this one, Ed Jones.  I read that the list has been subsequently changed, but as I see it now I don't find it inflammatory, although I don't think it's well composed, either, but that's besides the point.  I think someone could find your suggested alternative poll/list just as, if not more, objectionable and poorly composed than that made by Bonafide, let alone the series of political posts you made in this thread.  "All Lives Matter," for one, has become a polarizing slogan in some circles as has "Black Lives Matter" despite such statements seeming innocuous at face value.

There are million people worldwide going on the streets, because it's unbearable for them what happens in USA. And not only there. This is too big to ignore. I'm ok with IMDb, when they say it's too critical to make a poll of this situation. On IMDb there are many peoples jobs depending. But on the other hand it's a low down shame what happend. It was unjustified murder by a police man.

Please get me right. We follow the American news as well as German and worldwide news. Do you follow German news? Or french news? USA stands in the spotlight everyday when we turn on the news, maybe a little bit Brazil, UK or Russia are on the screen, too. Outstanders don't have the right to stipulate what you have to do, but we can talk to you as friends. Friends protect each other.

As a friend let me say this is to big to turn it down. The more you repress it, the more it will grow. I like how the policemen de-escalated the situation in many areas, showing sympathy to the demonstrating people.

1) IMDb polls should stay away from politics.

2) I do not appreciate when polls benefit from tragedy. We aren' talking events that shaped history (like WWII) here, we are talking about actuality, the situation is evolving pretty much each day. It is hard to have an objective overview.

3) Plus, this poll doesn't feel sensitive, I support the ideology behind #BlackLivesMatter. But the real tragedy is the death of George Floyd and the poll his question and the title seems too far from it.

In other words, your question is completely disconnected from the tragedy and the tragedy is completely disconnected from IMDb. From my point of view, this poll is not viable.

Enough is enough!  The mouse is speaking!  (You people: "The mouse?... what...")
This is ridiculous!  This is IMDb, not some website for bickering.  We all have our own opinions!
I understand the anger on both sides... but this is a poll suggestion!
It is up to BONAFIDE to do with it what he wants, and it's up to the IMDb poll gods to decide to let it go live or not.
Quite frankly, it's not our problem!

There, the mouse has said her piece.  Thank you.

I would also like to apologize to BONAFIDE for all this clogging his thread.  I've been the victim of that, myself, and I know it is annoying.

Oh, I see... I am very sorry.  I can see how that can be hurtful.
I did not realize that that was why; I thought it was just because I was kind of disagreeing...
Again, I am sorry.  :(  I wasn't actually addressing you; I meant any social media thread ever.  On that ever-mysterious other forum I'm on, the amount of people who can't disagree without cussing each other out is through the roof... I'm shell shocked.  xD
I'm sorry that hurt you, and I hope you can forgive me.  We all make mistakes.
I also apologize for my other comment.  I was under the impression that you were cutting me off just because I spoke up; I see now that that is not the case.

I have had numerous experiences, both online and in real life, where friends have turned their back on me for no good reason.  I'm always on alert for that.  I should've known that you are not like that.

Can you ever forgive me?

If Black Lives Matter was really serious about getting their message out by way of protest and avoid the association with criminals that are looting and burning businesses and throwing bricks, the WHY OH WHY are they protesting at night. This is when the majority of the criminal activity takes place.
So why do they not just protest during the day?
Answer is simple. They want that criminal element to do what it is doing. That way the police must try to maintain civil order. The Black Lives Matter people decry that they are being gassed and pepper sprayed. Well they need not be gassed and pepper sprayed IF THEY WOULD protest during the day.
A simple solution.
But the organization does not want this. No. They want anarchy.

This poll recognizes Black Lives Matter as some sort of angelic group. It is not.
As long as the name of this poll is the same as the the name of a group that uses tactics designed to stimulate violence I shall continue to act as I was told earlier and act in a childish fashion and ask that this thread be closed please.

I am 100% behind reform. I'm 100% for equal treatment to all by the police. I am not behind the organization that this poll is named after.

US polls show that nearly 75% of all Americans of all races DO NOT want what BLM Want's!

They want the shut down of I.C.E. The defunding of all Police agency's. Closing and abolition of all Police Departments. No F.B.I.

Please change the polls name.
Please rethink the choices in your poll.
Please remove Mr. Floyd's name. He is a private figure. Not a celebrity.
If not, please close this poll.

Thank you

I too would like to know why so many demonstrations take place at night. I simply figured or perhaps assumed that the activists want to protest all day and all night, while saving expenses by sleeping on the street and risking being taken into law enforcement custody rather than paying to stay at an inn, hotel or motel, transported to/from accordingly. Even if they camp out in the nearest forest, it may be very taxing for them to travel between a protest location and a rest site, day in and day out. I mean, can George Soros, the alleged/hypothetical financier of so many civil rights marches around the whole world, really supply every foot activist with his/her every need? Just some food for thought. I hadn't considered the possibility that some assemblies or some outright riots have more participants at nighttime than daytime, which is completely counterintuitive seeing as how demonstrators seeking exposure would expect to get it during the day rather than the night.

Bravo for this poll suggestion.

I've been making a list about the same general topic but the polls are pretty different because the question is different and, therefore, the films. You suggested your poll first, anyway, so even if they were similar, yours would get priority, of course. They are quite different, though, and who knows if I'll finish mine anytime soon.

'Pulp Fiction' is my favorite from this list, or practically any other list, and Jules is one of my all-time favrorite characters. His monologue in the diner, at the end of the film, is sheer genius.
