Drug overdose ("OD") is the leading cause of death in the United States for adults under 55.

Which movie character gives the most realistic portrayal of a drug addict?

List: https://www.imdb.com/list/ls041221279/

The Emoji Movie
why?
because twice mentioned in the poll:
Requiem for a Dream

OK, further no kidding.
There is no need in the above-mentioned duplicate, that could be replaced with more options:
Enter the Void (2009)
Spun (2002)

And the fact that "Sid and Nancy" and "Gia" are in the initial poll, this gives me the reason to suggest:
Blow (2001)
Ray (2004)
The Wolf of Wall Street (2013)

I couldn't chose between Jennifer Connelly and Jared Leto because they both give extraordinary performances as drug addicts in Requiem for a Dream (2000). That's why I put both of them. The same applies to The Panic in Needle Park (1971). I will keep only one character for each movie as soon as there are enough options.

Thanks for the other suggestions. I will work on them this afternoon.

I added the following:
Enter the Void (2009)
Spun (2002)
The Wolf of Wall Street (2013)

As for Blow (2001), George Jung was a drug dealer but I don't remember to what extent he was addicted himself.

Yes, great decision.
I've messed that Blow (2001) does not follow the "portrayal" criterion, as the movie is not aimed at any personal addict. It follows only as general metaphora for "addiction".

Great suggestions, thanks a lot. Most are included, although I picked Jim Morrison over Johnny Cash as the drug addicted rock star. For 'The Man with the Golden Arm' I'm not sure which image to select to illustrate the drug addiction.

Happy to include the type of addiction if the poll board can help me with some of the other options. Thanks!

Jim Carroll heroin addict The Basketball Diaries
Althea Leasure Flynt prescription painkiller addict The People vs. Larry Flynt
Helen
heroin addict The Panic in Needle Park

The specific addictions are listed in the plots on each movie's Wikipedia page or the real-life biography Wikipedia page. I think it is hard to know Which movie character gives the most realistic portrayal of a drug addict? when all addictions aren't the same. So, I would think that information would be helpful to answering the question.

Also Requiem for a Dream depicts four different forms of drug addiction in the four main characters. You might consider lifting your cap and instead strive for a variety of addictions, as well as, the more outstanding performances. I would think a poll about thirty heroin addict portrayals would be less interesting than one that ran the gamut of drug addiction portrayals.

I second Joaquin Phoenix's performance as Johnny Cash and I also think Cash should be included because people know, liked, and respected him so much, and he was able to get clean and live a good, full life. I think it's fine to have two musicians.

For me, the best movie ever made about the horrors of drug addiction, is Christiane F. - Wir Kinder vom Bahnhof Zoo (1981)

Sorry, I just saw this (congrats on your live poll!). Would you still consider adding Samuel L. Jackson as crack-addited Gator Purify in Jungle Fever (1991)?
