Hmmm... IMDb has a genre tag called HISTORY.
Your poll asks for our favorite HISTORICAL war movie.
And yet, only 14 of the films on your list have a History genre tag.

Here's an explanation on IMDb's guide:
History: Primary focus is on real-life events of historical significance featuring real-life characters (allowing for some artistic license); in current terms, the sort of thing that might be expected to dominate the front page of a national newspaper for at least a week; for older times, the sort of thing likely to be included in any major history book. While some characters, incidents, and dialog may be fictional, these should be relatively minor points used primarily to bridge gaps in the record. Use of actual persons in an otherwise fictional setting, or of historic events as a backdrop for a fictional story, would not qualify. If the focus is primarily on one person's life and character, rather than events of historical scope, use Biography instead. Objective.

Maybe define the term Historical War Film more clearly?

I agree at least a third to half of these titles don't measure up. I don't recall reading about any of the events or people in Inglourious Basterds (2009) in the history books. It is a completely fictional work, other than there was a World War II and two of Germany's leaders were supporting characters in the movie.

A solid Historical War Movie has a warfare, story that takes place during a real war with combat scenes central to the drama, typically featuring actual events or naval, air, and land battles with real historical people, but with several fictionalized and  limited dramatized elements.

I think Lawrence of Arabia (1962) stick close enough to the truth to qualify and would get my vote. Generally, when it is classified as a Biography you are on safe ground. Wikipedia is also pretty good at classifying movie by type in the overview. I would focus on movies that are more 90% true / !0% fiction than ones that are 10% true / 90% fiction. One of other favorites, Das Boot (1981) noted for its realism down to the screws, probably wouldn't qualify even though it was inspired by the real-life U-96, In making the movie, too many liberties were taken to tell an exciting story at the expense of accuracy. No movie has ever been (historically or not) 100% accurate/true. They are just movies, not documentaries.

Btw Mihailo, his poll isn't asking us for our favorite HISTORICAL war movies, it's asking us for our favorite HISTORICAL WAR movies. (there are two essential words in there.)

But I do agree with whether or not the poll author should state them as "real-life historical war films" or war films that are set in history.

I think everyone expects some liberties to be taken, maybe even more than a few.  But, it is matter of where the line is drawn 95%, 90%, 85% and so on. Movie with these thresholds, all are debatable and plausibly could be called Historical War Movies. The issue is with movies at the other end of the spectrum. Should Casablanca (1942) be called a Historical War movie simply because it happens during World War II and accurately portrays the tension between residents, refugees, Free French police and the Nazi Army in Morocco, a French protectorate, but everything else in fictional?  I can't even fathom the rationale behind calling Pan's Labyrinth (2006) a HISTORICAL WAR movie.

I am posting here about your two poll suggestion without posts. If you want you can still edit the titles on the poll threads to the shorter version. These shorter titles may be preferable, I think the official category name is fine in the question though..

So difficult because of the different wars and consequently different circumstances - but I'm leaning towards 'Killing Fields'. However, had 'Deer Hunter' been included, I hadn't hesitated.

What about war movies then?

If you only include movies with the "History" genre tag, then you should do the same for war.

Since your poll is not just about history, but war too. Isn't it?

I hope you look into it. Thank you.

You also removed 'Lawrence of Arabia.'

Note: IMDb display only 3 genres (on a list) but there can be more. If you go to its page, you can find more genres.

I hope you reconsider adding it. Thanks :)
