Here's a list of some of our favorite cinematic characters and so much of what made them so great is their opening scene - it immediately set the tone for what we could expect from them and left us wanting more of their presence.

Which of these character introductions do you believe to be the most memorable?

i love this idea...i also love that you included tim curry from 'rocky horror'...

it's similar to the first one i thought about when i read your question...

it was from the movie 'the stand', when you first see the devil walking thru the desert, with 'sympathy for the devil' playing behind him...a possible suggestion to add...
again...nice one kyle...

Thanks Pete, I tried to get a good mix of older and new characters - there seems to be a plethora of options though so I wouldn't be against a part 2 for this list.

Hannibal Lecter made a strong first impression.
Totally - It was so unnerving, really a strong scene. But I fear the Joker taking this one by a landslide... too bad because if people think about the scene vs. the character, there's a lot of strong ones here.

Personally I picked R. Lee Ermey. He is putting the recruits through training from hell, and gives them a warning about it.

As for Norman Bates, I think you picked the wrong line. Much of his conversation with Marion Crane seems rather suggestive. Among other parts of the dialogue:
* "I run the office and uh, tend the cabins and grounds and, and do a little, uh, errands for my mother. The ones she allows I might be capable of doing."
*"Well, a boy's best friend is his mother. "
* "Where are you going? I didn't mean to pry." ..."What are you running away from? "
*"You know what I think? I think that we're all in our private traps, clamped in them, and none of us can ever get out. We scratch and we claw, but only at the air, only at each other, and for all of it, we never budge an inch."...  "I was born in mine. I don't mind it anymore."
*"Mother met this man, and he talked her into building this motel. He could have talked her into anything. And when he died too, it was just too great a shock for her. And, and the way he died. I guess it's nothing to talk about while you're eating. "
*"A son is a poor substitute for a lover."
*[When asked why does he not leave his mother]: "I couldn't do that. Who'd look after her? She'd be alone up there. The fire would go out. It'd be cold and damp like a grave. If you love someone, you don't do that to them - even if you hate them. You understand that I don't hate her. I hate what she's become. I hate the illness."
*[When asked why does not he put his mother some place]: "You mean an institution? A madhouse? [suddenly cold] People always call a madhouse "someplace", don't they? "Put her in someplace." " ... "What do you know about caring? Have you ever seen the inside of one of those places? The laughing, and the tears, and the cruel eyes studying you? My mother there? "
*[Norman in sarcasm mode]: "People always mean well! They cluck their thick tongues, and shake their heads and suggest, oh, so very delicately! "
*[When asked about his mother]: "She needs me. It-it's not as if she were a... a maniac — a raving thing. She just goes a little mad sometimes. We all go a little mad sometimes. Haven't you?"
