December 3, 2019 marks the twentieth anniversary of the debut of Spike Jonze’s Being John Malkovich (1999). In the film a puppeteer discovers a portal that leads literally into the head of movie star John Malkovich.

If you could enter the portal to John Malkovich’s head, which film role would you most wish to experience while being in his head?

List: https://www.imdb.com/list/ls097430294/
Poll: https://www.imdb.com/poll/kKBYY5flzbk/

= = =

Notes:
1. The poll is based on this search:

https://www.imdb.com/search/title/?title_type=feature&role=nm0000518

2. Priority was given to roles in John Malkovich’s films in which he starred. Choices with images that crop well have been placed towards the beginning.

Ed,

Great choice.

FYI: If you chose
1 Rev. Gustav Briegleb in Changeling (2008)

You could meet Clint Eastwood directing Angelina Jolie, Colm Feore and John Malkovich .

I changed my mind! great choice!
I could be Angelina's Dads stunt double or stand in!
Waiting for a call from the producers of Ray Donovan, so I can be Micky's long lost younger brother. Yeah......I'm dreaming. Was told I look like Voight way back in 1975 for the first time. If I ever get off my dead a** and get some photos on my name page you'll see the resemblance.

Tom Ripley. However, if the search had yielded the result, I would have gone with Charles Talleyrand. The Napoleon miniseries, Les Misérables, The Three Musketeers (all also starring Gérard Depardieu) and Johnny English were the first instances when I noticed Malkovich, so I used to assume he was French.

Alb,

I decided to limit the choices to feature films.

This goes on my list as one of my favorite polls. This is the kind of poll to which all poll authors should aspire: it does its subject justice. Bravo.

It's also a really difficult choice: At first I think definitely 'Empire of the Sun' but then what about 'Dangerous Liaisons' and 'The Killing Fields?' And, of course, how trippy and surreal but amazing to be able to be in Malkovich's head, perhaps alongside John Cusack or Catherine Keener as they practice their craft, as Malkovich plays Malkovich but, of course, possibly also simultaneously portraying, for example, Keener's character... it makes me dizzy, lol, but what a wonderful dizzy it would be. : )

Thanks for the recommendation, Dan. It looks fascinating. I'm so excited to read it; I was going to ask for Proust's Remembrance of Things Lost for a Secret Santa I have for Christmas but it's so expensive so I decided I'll borrow it from the library -- this book is what's replacing it on my Christmas list. : )

Thanks so much, Dan. I had a rough day so this is perfect timing. Directing my cognitive energy into something like that is the best cure for the winter blues. :)
