No matter how many movies or characters they played, these actors recognized only for a particular role that made them famous. They will forever be known for that one role.

Which one do you think is the hardest to forget?

I have no objection against any of these options but most of them concern actors who haven't played a wide range of memorable characters so it's only fair that they're remembered for the most iconic part. Hopkins is an exception because he did play many great roles but Lecter is such a larger-than-life character he instantly overshadows the others.

FYC

Peter Lorre as M
Michael J. Fox as Marty McFly
F. Murray Abraham as Salieri
Anthony Quinn as Zorbas the Greek
Edward G Robinson as Little Ceasar (m'yeah, see?)

Well, yeah that's the idea, for now on. They will be freed from this list after they broke the curse and find another memorable role.

Added them, I haven't seen any of their old movies, hope its legit. Thanks

Too bad he's more popular from TV.  He's not qualify because we listed people from movies. We may need a different list for TV.

But it is in full context when the actual movie is watched. Watching an excerpt just sort of potentially ruins the movie for somebody who hasn't seen it before.

ACT_1, yes, I know all about the "gimp". I don't know whether you're doing it by accident or not, but please quit spoiling all these movies. People who have never seen them before are supposed to be shocked by the scenes, especially in the case of movies that have no part of them set in penitentiary.

Hey Jeorj......Luckily I finally watched Deliverance for the first time 9 months ago. Some people who watch a lot of Flix have a watch list. Some pics are as old as 60-70 years. So plot spoilers should be avoided. I agree with you.

Bruce Campbell could work (Ash Williams- Evil Dead film series), if its acceptable that his other subjectively 'memorable' role is a main character on the TV show Burn Notice rather than another movie.  Playing Elvis on Bubba Ho-Tep might pass for memorable as well, depending on who you ask.

Also, I personally don't think Johnny Depp should be on the list. Edward Scissorhands is just as iconic as Jack Sparrow, if not more.

Hi, groovyvic. Well, it's a difficult list, since some of the people on it are memorable for a number of roles, but seemingly the list is not intended to be limited to including actors who have sort of been typecast.

This list in inherently flawed. These may be the actors' iconic roles, but so many of them are NOT recognized for that one role. I mean, DiCaprio? Hopkins?

These should not be on this list:
DiCaprio
Hopkins
Craig
Jackman
Wood
Fox
Abraham
Quinn
Depp

'Great idea and several good options. I would probably remove DiCaprio, Maguire, Craig, Jackman , and Robinson - and maybe Hopkins, although, despite his many memorable roles, Lecter is certainly his iconic role in a big way (but "could never break free?" He, like the others I mentioned, have had such successful careers otherwise so he wasn't bound to that role in a way that trapped or limited him). It would be different if this were a "most iconic role" poll.

"recognized only for a particular role" is not accurate for Hopkins. For instance, he waa nominated for three Oscars after that role.

But you can change the text instead, I guess.

Hopkins had so many roles, he really got of the 'only' role Hannibal Lecter. He had roles at shakespeare's 'Titus' as well as 'The Remains of the Day', 'Hitchcock', 'Noah', the 'Thor'-movies, 'The Rite', 'Fracture', 'The Human Stain', Roundevouz with Joe Black', 'Legends of Fall', 'Chaplin', 'The Elephant Man', 'The Bounty' and some more I have seen, he really is not pinned to Hannibal Lecter. I could see another more movie with him in and I would not think of Lecter, as I never did outside his role of Hannibal. He is a great actor. Passionate. Sometimes lovely, the other time hateable. When it comes to Tobey Maguire I think similar, but not so distinctive.

This looks really good but I'm thinking about the phrase, "They will forever be known for that one role." We can't really know that so perhaps mitigating it a bit? Perhaps "They may forever be known for that one role, while they've done a lot of other work."

I'm just thinking of Tobey Maguire, for example. Like some others on this list, he's still young so who knows what will happen? Also memories and knowledge of movies change. It's entirely possible that 'Wonder Boys' or 'The Ice Storm' have more staying power than the Spiderman movies and that's what he's remembered for. Or he could start doing a lot of films again and... John Travolta, for example, might have been thought to never be able to break out of 'Saturday Night Live,' and then 'Pulp Fiction' happened.

I think it's a great poll and I think this list is quite good. I'd just suggest that one small change. :)

Silitonga, These three related poll suggestions have been updated to the 2019 Oscar ceremony and are in the process of being converted to live polls. The other related poll for Best Leading Actress Oscar Performances is one of your polls. It is a formerly live poll created by Silitonga titled, Most Memorable Character to win Oscar Best Actress in past 26 Years. It covers the Oscar ceremonies from 1991 to 2016 as a character poll, but has been de-activated.

PS: Best Leading Actor Oscar Performances (1990-Now)
Poll: https://www.imdb.com/poll/TjE3XCiEOcE/

PS: Best Supporting Actor Oscar Performances (1990-Now)
Poll: TBD
PS: Best Supporting Actress Oscar Performances (1990-Now)
Poll: https://www.imdb.com/poll/tEs-H8T4YpQ/

If you wish to recast the poll covering the Oscar ceremonies from 1991 to 2019 as a IMAGE poll, I would be happy to included in the group of related hyperlinks. I would suggest the title, Best Leading Actress Oscar Performances (1990-Now) for uniformity.
Greatest Acting Oscar Performances (1990-Now) Companion Polls Lead Actor : Lead Actress : Supporting Actor : Supporting Actress

I am posting here as your related discussion link Discuss the list here for the formerly poll no longer exists.
