I'm a little confuse with the list title, "Favorite Best...", because "best" and "favorite" are two different thing that will probably lead into different result. I think its best to choose "Favorite director..." or "Best director..." or "Top director..."

My favorite from the list is Christopher Nolan

Tiny semantic note - you say "born AFTER 1970" but you have directors on the list born in 1970.

For Your Consideration (to be added to the list):
Xavier Dolan
Sarah Polley
JA Boyana
Dee Rees
JC Chandor
Colin Trevorrow
Taika Waititi
Matthew Vaughn
Evan Goldberg
Joe Wright
Nicolas Winding Refn
Ramin Bahrani

Not sure if this was a purposeful omission or just because there were so many names, but you didn't add my suggestion of Taika Waititi, who directed Thor: Ragnarok.

If you meant to do that, NP.

Supachewy,

Typically three poll suggestions go live every day.

FAQ: Selection Criteria for Polls
An administrator reviews the poll suggestions, reviews the threads and publishes the poll based on these basic criteria.

1. Was the poll suggested on the IMDb Poll message board?
2. Has the author created a list for the poll?
3. Are there at most 35 choices? Polls with limited choices are given preference.
4. Did the author include a clickable link to the list in his/her post?
5. Did the author include in the list a clickable link back to the thread? The link back allows people taking the poll to comment on the poll.
6. Is the poll question compelling and/or unique?
7. Are the choices in the poll likely answers to the question?
8. Are descriptions clear, concise and grammatical?
9. Is the author a new author with two or less published polls? New author are given preference so long as the poll meets the above criteria.
10. Has the author made a reasonable attempt to incorporate suggestions from other contributors?
11. Do the majority of choices have images? Are the images compelling? Preference is given to polls that have images for all choices.
12. Is the poll timely? For instance does the poll publicize a current event such as the death of a well known actor or actress?
13. Have other contributors shown interest in the poll suggestion?
14. Will people likely vote in this poll?

Hi Supachewy and welcome to poll authoring. :)

FYC: Jordan Peele (won an Oscar a few months ago so I'd suggest definitely adding him.
Greta Gerwig (like Peele's Get Out, the 2017 film she directed, Lady Bird, was nominated for several Oscars this year, including Best Picture, and she, like Peele, was nominated for an Oscar for Best Director, so I think she's another "must have" on the list.)
The fact that few women and African-American men have been nominated for Best Director adds to their significance.
John Krasinski  (directed A Quiet Place and The Hollars)

My vote, which won't surprise anyone, will go to Sean Baker. This is a good list that brings attention to some very deserving directors - Bravo!

Hi Ruby, great suggestions but I wanted to keep it to directors that have made more than one film, although I am very excited about where these artists careers will take them!

Hi Supachewy,

Since you wish to limit your poll to directors with two or more films, please consider changing the question for your list from:
From this list of directors who is your favorite?

To:
From this list of directors with two or more films who is your favorite?

Thanks.

Hi Supachewy, That criteria you set makes  a lot of sense: It is kind of difficult to judge a director's work from just one movie. Gerwig actually did direct two films, although the first had a co-director, but if you want to add her (since you still have the room - polls can have 35 options - and she's well known now, people, especially women, might be looking for her), here's the film: Nights and Weekends (2008)

John Krasinski  (directed A Quiet Place and The Hollars) also has two films and A Quiet Place is so popular right now.

You already have Sean Baker on the list (yay!) and you have his two most well-known films listed but he also directed the following feature-length movies: Starlet, Prince of Broadway, Take Out, and Four Letter Words

: )

Also, because name lists don't include any information about the person when the list becomes a poll, you can add a few noteworthy movies that each filmmaker has directed. The film titles will appear right under the name and probably will make it easier for people to vote, likely resulting in more votes for your poll.

For example, you could add something like: Films include 'Magnolia' 'Phantom Thread,' and 'There Will Be Blood.'
Here's an example: https://www.imdb.com/poll/rb_wEy-CDjY/?ref_=po_ho
If you want the text to be bolded, just add immediately before the text and immediately after.

:)

It looks really good, although, as Jess and Dan point out below, if you keep them listed on different lines, unfortunately, the poll software will print them strangely.

I would recommend that you list the films like this:

Phantom Thread, Inherent Vice, The Master, There Will be Blood, Punch Drunk Love, Magnolia, Boogie Nights, Hard Eight

Otherwise, it won't look good if this becomes a poll.

Would you consider adding Taika Waititi and John Krasinski as well? They have both directed at least two films.

Hi Supachewy,

I strongly recommend that you follow Jessica's advice regarding how you show the films. The poll software removes carriage returns between lines. For instance, the list of films for Paul Thomas Anderson as you currently have them will be displayed as:

Phantom Thread Inherent Vice The Master There Will be Blood Punch Drunk Love Magnolia Boogie Nights Hard Eight

This will be very difficult to read.

Separating the titles with commas, makes the list of films much easier to read:
Phantom Thread, Inherent Vice, The Master, There Will be Blood, Punch Drunk Love, Magnolia, Boogie Nights, Hard Eight

I also recommend that you consider Jessica's suggestion of adding Taika Waititi and John Krasinski as well. They have both directed at least two films.

Hey Supachewy,

I hope you're still around on this GS discussion thread. This is a very good poll, especially for a new author -- it's gets a lot easier once you've done one or two polls. I'm sorry that, when I suggested that you include the names of some films by the directors, that I did not mention what Jess and Dan pointed out above. That would have made it easier but changing it shouldn't take much time at all. This is a good poll that I'm fairly certain would "go live" once the changes that Dan and Jess suggested are made, and I look forward to seeing any other poll suggestions that you might have.

Hi Supa C, I hope your finals went well and that you're happy that they're over. Your list looks great. :)

One final FYC:

Since you have many on this list with two films, I'd suggest Gerwig: she also directed two films, and I think it's important to include the women. Plus, she's well known now since her Oscar nominations so, people, especially women, might be looking for her). If you want to add her, even after it goes live in a "re-push," here's the film: Nights and Weekends (2008). (Oh, anyone can tell you how to request a re-push, although it's pretty easy. Here's the link to the page where you can do that: https://getsatisfaction.com/imdb/topics/faq-poll-authors-re-push-requests?topic-reply-list[settings]...)

You already have Sean Baker on the list (yay!) and you have his two most well-known films listed but he also directed the following feature-length movies: Starlet, Prince of Broadway, Take Out, and Four Letter Words.

Congrats on your first poll!

My kneejerk reaction is Sofia Coppola.

When I look at the list, the filmmakers who I've seen all of their films are:
Edgar Wright
Damien Chazelle (not tough when you'd only made two films)
Martin McDonagh
Patty Jenkins (ditto above)
Sean Baker (same)
JC Chandor
Dee Rees

But when I really think of the quality of the individual films, my tops are:
Jeff Nichols
Edgar Wright
Joe Wright
Martin McDonagh
Christopher Nolan

Who I want to see more of:
Ryan Coogler
Yorgos Lanthimos
Xavier Dolan
John Krasinki

So, when it comes down to it, Edgar Wright and Jeff Nichols are my tops. And since Edgar Wright will likely get many votes on his own, I'm voting for Jeff Nichols.

I must be missing the joke, if there is one.

Apichatpong Weerasethakul
July 16, 1970 in Bangkok, Thailand
Nickname: Joe

Apichatpong Weerasethakul (b. 1970, Bangkok) grew up in Khon Kaen, a city in the north east of Thailand. He has a degree in Architecture from Khon Kaen University and a Master of Fine Arts in Filmmaking from The School of the Art Institute of Chicago. He has been making films and videos since the early 90s. He is one of the few filmmakers in Thailand who have worked outside the strict Thai studio system.
