In the film The Quick and the Dead (1995), John P. Herod tells Fee “The Kid”, “You’re not half the man I am.” But based on both character’s actions and what they say in the film, I am not so sure about that. If I say anything more, I would be swaying the vote. Using your own criteria and obersvations, who was the better man? Herod or The Kid?

Discuss this showdown here and find out mine and other’s reasoning. Be respectful of their viewpoints.

My pick is The Kid. Sure The Kid was a braggart, and maybe a liar,. But the scenes in the gunsmithshop shows that he had honesty and integrity when he said that if a gun didn’t work, he wouldn’t sell it. He even has a policy of one full round with every gun sold which would have given Cort an even chance in the gunfights. It was Harod who stops that. And The Kid Fee showed the Swede mercy once the Swede was down and clearly beat. Herod does not to Ace.

As for being a liar, there is no proof that the kid actually did the crimes he claims he said he did. In fact, logic says the opposite. 1) Herod clearly calls out the kids on that by saying that the kid is not a killer while Herod and Cort were. 2) if he was as bad as he claimed he was, why was he running a gunsmith ship instead of making a living by his gun as the rest of the gun fighters in that film were?

Herod seamed to think that being a man was how much you can kill. But Herod ran that contest out of fear by drawing gunslingers to him on his terms and with his own men protecting him instead the gunslingers coming to him on their terms. I think Herod did not like seeing that the kid was morally a better man than he was.

Great idea for a poll suggestion and one of the least appreciated Sam Raimi movies for some reason, despite it is a great western.

Correction: it should read as :”I think so too. I thought that if it is what I thought about the kid and Herod, then there are others too that ether saw the same issue in the film or thought the same way too .”
