Dear IMDb:

I am once again experiencing a numbering problem in list edit mode.
Here is the list in question: https://www.imdb.com/list/ls027608621/ - Film Life: The American Presidents and the History of the United States.
Your help in regards to this problem will be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Hello,

Thank you for your post.

Can you clarify what you are using to edit your list? Are you on desktop or an app?

Thanks.

Jaime,
The problem is with the data. Here's a screenshot of some of the Exported data. Notice the repeated position numbers 1212 and 1215.

This is a long-standing intermittent problem (dating back to at least the big system updates a couple of years ago), and the tech team seems to be able to correct the position numbers without altering the created/modified dates. I wonder if they've ever determined and fixed the Cause of the problem, or if this is a newly-infected list.

Dr-Faustus,
Since you have many longish, oft-edited (and oft-viewed!) lists, and will likely experience this problem again, you might want to make sure you provide the location of the corrupted position numbers in your subsequent reports, and mention that the data itself is visibly wrong when Exported. And  whether you edit on desktop or app.

Hi Jaime & bderoes

Thanks bderoes for articulating this problem so effectively. True, this is not the first time I've experienced this problem, and will probably experience it again. I would just like to point out that I am using a desktop device. Also, there is an additional numbering issue occurring on page 8 in edit-mode:  1756, 1758, 1758, 1759, 1761, 1761, 1762.

Anyway, thanks for all your effort. It is appreciated.

Dear IMDb

As predicted, I am experiencing an identical problem with another list: https://www.imdb.com/list/ls046891728/  - Film Life: War and Revolution. I am using a desktop device and the numbering issue on page one in edit mode is as follows: 18, 19, 19, 20

Your help in regards to this issue will be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance

Dear IMDb

Could a Champion / Employee / Official Rep please inform me what the "Acknowledged" tag represents in relation to actually having this problem fixed.
Any response will be much appreciated.
Thanks in advance.

Dr-Faustus, "Acknowledged" usually means that problem was noted and is worked on, hence distinction with "Answered".

Hi Nikolay Yeriomin (Mykola Yeromin)

Thanks for your response. The reason why I'm enquiring is as a result of another thread relating to the very same problem posted 2 days ago: getsatisfaction.com/imdb/topics/list-numbers-wrong -  that thread is tagged "In Progress" whereas, this problem reported more than a week ago is tagged "Acknowledged". If, in my understanding, "In Progress" supersedes "Acknowledged" then why does an issue reported 2 days ago have preference over an issue reported more than a week ago?

Dr-Faustus, that is probably a correct assessment, but I don't think these two have the firm distinction. In my experience IMDb staff are rarely abandoning both "Acknowledged" and "In Progress", while "Answered" usually means a non-issue and/or something that cannot be fixed by them.

Hi Nikolay Yeriomin (Mykola Yeromin)

It would be nice to get some clarity on this from an employee. There is a definite distinction between "In Progress" and "Acknowledged" if those terms are taken literally. "Answered" is self-explanatory - that I understand.
Anyway Nikolay, thanks for your effort. Hopefully an IMDb employee may supply more information sometime in the near future.

Thanks again.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled List order broken (several people at spot with number 1).

hey guys can you fix this for me. I simply tried it myself by correcting the numbers early on, but it won't save.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled List numbers wrong..

At the start of the list there are some double or missing numbers and then there is also a gap. If I try to renumber, I get an error message.

Still no solution? The problem is still present. Therefore I cannot update this list with new titles or sort them out. Please a follow up as soon as possible.

Did you look in your list to verify the problem is still there? Sometimes things get fixed long before they tell us so.

My experience with this problem was that you can still add to the list, but that was several months ago.

I checked several times, but the problem remains. Yes, adding things to the list is possible, but I do not know if it has any effect on the problem.

Adding didn't have an effect when I went through this - at least not that I saw. In a way, neither did deleting. When I deleted titles higher in position relative to the hole, the hole just moved up as a normal title would. I never deleted all the titles above the hole to see if that would make the hole vanish, or make it stay at position 1.

If you get tired of waiting, I once just copied all the titles to a new list, and the hole did NOT come with them. That, of course, loses all the dates added information, but for that list I didn't care. If you do that, it might be nice to leave the original "holey" list online for the tech staff to view. I don't know if they're trying to determine the cause of the problem, but if so, your list would have value for that.

Thank you for the advice, but I do not have the time for making a new list. My question is simply to solve the problem. I'm not spending time to add new things on a broken list either, but thank you for the advice.

Making a new list takes very little time. When you copy from one list to another, the order is preserved. And with the checkbox that selects everything on the page, you can copy 250 at a time.

Thanks mate. For me the issue is over now. I copied to the new list and deleted the old list. I suggest everybody does the same unless they care about the original date when they created this list or the viewer count.

Hi Horst

Unfortunately, unless the root cause of this issue is resolved there is a great possibility this problem wil resurface. And yes, there are listees that care about the date their lists were created and the viewer count.

This issue still has not been fixed, and if anything it's getting worse? It's gotten to the point where if I delete even ONE item from a list, the numbering gets completely screwed up and there's no way to solve it besides copying everything to a new list.

This is already a giant pain in the neck as is (being able to copy 250 names at a time doesn't mean much for a list of 10,000), but a lot of times trying to copy/move the list results in errors in the NEW list, which just takes more time.

I know in the grand scheme of things this is a minor complaint, but I like to make these lists as a way to relax and in the last few months they just wind up creating more stress. There HAS to be some way to fix this, right?

Noah, you are posting to a "Solved" thread, so IMDb staff may not see your comment. If you have this problem, I suggest starting a new thread and include the url(s) of your corrupted list(s).
