non-English plot summaries

I randomly came across a plot summary written in Italian and, by following the plot-author link, discovered that the same contributor has written more than 80 plot summaries in Italian. (There are probably also many other examples in the database in other languages as well, but I'm not hunting for them).

I suspect that these were submitted back in the days when imdb.it existed (along with imdb.de, imdb.fr and several other localized versions of the site). Although I didn't pay much attention to these translated versions of IMDb at the time, I think I recall that they actively encouraged users to submit plot summaries and reviews in their own language. But the localized versions of IMDb were abandoned years ago and current policy is for all plot summaries to be in English only.

Which leaves me with a dilemma. This contributor has obviously put a lot of time and effort into their plot summaries and has done nothing wrong, following the guidelines as they were at the time. It would sadden me to have to delete all their work simply because policy has changed (in fact I was tempted to simply ignore it and say nothing). But current policy is what it is. I would also note that from a quick check through these plot summaries it seems that most of the titles also have other plot summaries (or at least an outline) in English, so deleting the Italian one wouldn't leave a title with no summary at all.

So, should these Italian plot summaries be deleted to comply with current policy? Or can an exception be made to allow them to be preserved, based on the history and the fact that they were once encouraged? Or is there another solution that I've overlooked?

Those summaries were valid at the time, and their existence causes no inconvenience to anyone and they can still be useful for many of us. I understand that there are many languages and there has to be a limit somewhere, but reviews in some principal languages should be allowed, particularly if it's regarding films made in that language or counter. This enriches the site.

Well, we do not know that for sure. IMDb.it did exist in the past, but how do we know they were added to IMDb.it at the time and not to the regular, English IMDb? I think only a staffer can answer that.

Maybe they should, but the current situation is that they aren't...

Personally, I'd be all in favour of allowing other languages in some parts of the database, but for that to happen it absolutely must start from IMDb policy, and preferably be backed up with technical support (for example to allow the software to identify and filter languages).

But requesting a policy change isn't the purpose of this thread, right now I just want clarification on the current policy.

I totally understand the dilemma. I've encountered a case like that where synopsis/outline and trivia were in Dutch and translated them in order for someone's work not going to waste. That said, while I'm at least trying to learn Dutch I only know bits and pieces of Italian...

Thanks Nikolay.  Unfortunately if I tried to translate these myself, I'd be entirely dependent on online/machine translators and the awkward, clumsy results would probably be more insulting to the original author than deletion!

Hi Phil G,

Have you got a link to the examples and I can investigate?

Thanks Phil G, yes unfortunately those plots are ineligible. I've now removed them from the site.

Thanks,
Will

Agreed, just to clarify, we haven't totally removed the data, just removed it from display for if this ever becomes an option.
