New title or more episodes of existing title? Great Alaskan/Canadian Railroad Journeys

Michael Portillo has done some more programmes where he travels a country's railways/railroads, visiting places of interest.

So far he's done:

Great British Railway Journeys (2010- )
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1578652/reference

Great Continental Railway Journeys  (2012- )
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt2498076/reference

Great American Railroad Journeys
(2016- )
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt5378198/reference

Now he's doing 5 episodes with a title Great Alaskan Railroad Journeys (as listed in the opening titles sequence) and at least 5 episodes are scheduled for next week with the title Great Canadian Railroad Journeys (as billed in Digiguide and Radio Times).

Should these be regarded as another season of Great American, or should they be two additional titles since that's how they are described in the opening titles sequence?

I assumed that they were new titles and have created series and episodes accordingly https://www.imdb.com/title/tt9523448/reference and https://www.imdb.com/title/tt9561818/reference, but I notice that someone has also created episodes in season 4 of Great American Railroad Journeys with the same info. One or other of these sets of episodes is redundant - but which one?

Just to add to the confusion, on BBC iPlayer, the Alaskan and Canadian episodes are grouped together under the title Great Alaskan and Canadian Railroad Journeys https://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episodes/b0c0x283?suggid=b0c0x283 - so maybe that is how IMDB should list them?

Help!

Hi Martin,

Well that's an interesting case! It seems to me like this should be treated as a standalone series and not as another season of Great American. I've just checked myself and you are correct, they are listed under the one title on the iplayer but the episode is listed as Great Alaskan Railroad Journeys on the title card. In terms of ease for users I think it is best to use the iplayer title and group them under the "Great Alaskan and Canadian Railroad Journeys" title. You could also add (alternative title) akas for the 2 individual titles on that series as well to aid discovery. Are you ok making the changes? If not let me know and we can look into it.

Will

Thanks for the advice. I'll rename "Alaskan" to "Alaskan and Canadian" and add the aka titles. When that change has taken effect I'll rename each of the 5 "Canadian" episodes to episodes 1.6-1.10 of the combined series.

Should I also request deletion for the episodes 4.x of the "American" series which are duplicates?

Cannot add aka titles until Alaskan title has changed to Alaskan and Canadian, and Canadian has been deleted, otherwise aka titles clash with real series titles.

So far, the interim state is that the Canadian episodes still exist under their original numbers but now have episode titles (apart from the one I forgot!), but I imagine that's a half-way stage before they get moved to the Alaskan title (which itself will change to Alaskan and Canadian) and have their numbers increased by 5.

Hopefully it will all work out OK eventually...

Many thanks. Now that all the episodes of Canadian have been moved to Alaskan and Canadian, how do I delete the series-level entry for Canadian? Is it something I can do, or do you need to do it? Once it's been done, I'll add Canadian as an aka title for Alaskan and Canadian.

Thanks. And I've now added Canadian as an aka for the Alaskan and Canadian title.

Can I check something? Should the aka title have the same format as the primary title, including double quotes around it to denote that it is a TV series, not a movie? I ask because I submitted the Alaskan aka like that and the quotes have been stripped off in the published version. If that's expected and OK, then there's no problem, but I wanted to check with you.
