Hi. I noticed that IMDB no longer offers suggestions / recommendations on movie pages for 'Movies Like This' or similar movies. Love what you guys do at IMDB but i really loved this section as it helped me find some hidden gems simply by looking up a movie i really liked. Please bring it back. Thanks.

Garrett,

You are probably in the reference view (the title page's URL ends with .../reference) where it is omitted, whereas it is displayed on the standard view.
Does it ring a bell for you?

The screenshots are from the desktop IMDB site.

But yeah, you should test if you have enabled reference mode.

I retested the links I posted above after enabling Reference mode, and the "Movies like this" does indeed disappear. So you should check if you have enabled reference mode.

You can change it here (uncheck the checkbox):

If you use the reference view by default, the quickest way to access the standard view is to use the private navigation in parallel.

Thanks for the feedback, both of you but I dont actually have reference mode enabled strangely enough. I do see the 'More Like This' section today on desktop site on certain movies within Marium0505s screenshot but the movies I checked yesterday still dont have the 'More Like This' section on them. Heres a couple examples:

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt1880399/?ref_=nv_sr_1

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt6485928/?ref_=rvi_tt

I guess I just assumed all movies would have the 'More Like This' section on their IMDB page but that doesnt appear to be the case. Do you guys see the same I do at those links?

Hi Garrett,

I confirm I do not have the "More like this" for these 2 in the standard view.

Odd...

The feature is not available on all titles, sorry, as we require a certain amount of data to feed into the system which generate the list of similar titles.

We have a ticket open to better document this.

Can you let users manually suggest similar titles and vote on them? Rather having done automatically by machine? You could also let us add comments on how they are similar.

Ah ok, thanks for the clarification Col. Its a great feature so itd be really nice to also have it on the smaller, independent film pages if it was possible in the future fwiw. Thanks again for confirming through

I wanted to follow up on this as I have the same problem with the desktop version of imdb.com. The explanation given by Col Needham makes sense except I see this section on every page I have looked on in the app but in some of the corresponding pages on the desktop version don't have it which doesn't make sense. For example this title https://www.imdb.com/title/tt4820370/?ref_=nv_sr_1?ref_=nv_sr_1 shows More Like This in the app but not the desktop. I came across more but haven't made a list yet.

Is there a reason for this discrepancy?

Thanks.

Hi Karen,

Different devices may give slightly different options in the 'More like this' section, to offer a wider range of suggestions for what to watch next.

For more information, please check out our Help page: What is the 'More Like This' section?

Thanks Claire. I understand it can look different across devices but my point is that it shows in the app for that page I referenced but it doesn't appear at all for the same page on the desktop version. I'm not sure why that would be the case. Seems odd or a bug.

Hi Karen,

This is not a bug. As mentioned before by Claire, the sections can differ across the app and desktop versions of IMDb - this includes possibly appearing on one and not the other.

We appreciate your concern in bringing this to our attention!

Hi Steve. I'm sorry but in this case I consider it to be a bug. To have an entire content section not appear on a particular page in the desktop version only to have it appear on the same page in the app makes no sense and provides a bad user experience. After all if I hadn't decided to look at the page on my phone I wouldn't have discovered other programs I might like that are similar to the one I was viewing because looking at the same page on my laptop didn't even show the section.

This isn't a case of functionality appearing that enhances the use of either the desktop version or the app version which means the same functionality might not appear on both. This is a case of a content section that provides additional information for the user appearing on a page in the app version but not appearing on the same page in the desktop version.
