Incorrect Release Date

A documentary I produced, The Man from Mo'Wax ( has been incorrectly logged as a 2016 release and says '(2016)' next to the movie title at the top of the page.

We had our World Premiere at SXSW in 2016 - but this seems to have been automatically registered as our general release date. The film did not have its public theatrical release until 31/08/2018. It is very important that the film is clearly described as a 2018 film because this seriously affects our current, ongoing awards applications and the perception of the film.

I have tried several times to submit changes to the page to make this clear, but it seems that the system has decided firmly on this 2016 release date and won't budge. I've even had to go so far as deleting all festival information from the page to try and clear up confusion about the release date, but this hasn't worked. Does anyone know how to fix this? I would appreciate any help that can be offered.

IMDB is a respected source of information and this error could have a negative impact on our film.

It has been IMDb's rule for all movies since its beginning: the first public showing sets the birth date for any program. So a festival showing, especially as prominent as SXSW, is taken into account, whatever date the distribution or marketing policies may chose later on.

An upside: Since it looks like the film had a wide release in the UK, it should not only be listed as a London premiere. If you add the release date, this date will also be displayed on the title page instead of the 15 March 2016 date. However, the title year in parentheses will remain the same.
