Hello, I have been trying yo add images to various titles, and it keeps rejecting them because they don't fit.  I am at my wits end trying to find one that does fit... can anyone tell me how to resize it so they fit?  I'm using Windows Paint.  Thank you!

Large can be cropped. To small cannot be enlarged.
If Large and too many pixels +20MB, cropping  can cut out to much of the photo to get it under 20MB.
Post the photos please.

I suggest resizing the image to double (or more) of its current size. I do it all the time with different software. (I just pulled up Paint, and Resize is there, using percentages, and they have a tickbox for maintaining aspect ratio.)

So you double a small photo in size so it looks like this BAD!!!!
IMDb will not accept this poor quality. It was too small to begin with.

If the system says that the picture is too small, it’s best to forget it and keep trying to find a better one. There’s no point adding soft, fuzzy and murky pictures. Sometimes there just isn’t any good photos/covers/posters.

First is 301X334. Too Small
Second is 225X225. Way too small

Look how bad it is at 504X504.

Oh, I don't care if they're poor quality... I can't find any that aren't!  It's just a shame to see my fave shorts not have cover images.

Hi, NarniaisAwesome:

It seems that the images belong to Safety: Harm Hides at Home and
Beginning Responsibility: Lunchroom Manners respectively. There are clips of both short films easily available on YouTube. Try to locate one with a certain quality (though is hard to find higher than 480p), take a screenshot and crop it (if needed) with an image editor (Windows Paint is too simple, but suffices to just cropping; there are very good free online editors, like Pixlr)...

Here you are:

Cheers!

If a title has no cover image, something is (mostly) better than nothing.

Those I've contributed look fine for the purposes of the smallish icons for lists (grid or detail view), and for the cover image on a title page. At least that's true on a 15.6" monitor. Maybe on 55" the image comes across as blurry.

I don't contribute one that looks blurry at the icon level.

BTW, a lot of what falls short and I double - come from Amazon product listings. So they're actually clear enough, just very efficiently stored.

I don’t personally agree that ”something is better than nothing”, if the only photos are in poor quality. It’s a bit counter productive, since it could make the film/series look bad.

Like ljdoncel said, screenshots from Youtube could save the day if other options are not available, but it depends on the quality (the source/resolution of the video), to be honest. Screenshots from the DVD or Blu-ray are of course (often) great options, but require a bit more work.

I absolutely agree with you. In this particular case, they are two old short films for which finding a better quality/resolution than "YouTube" is very difficult, hence my advice. For more recent or remastered works, where a better source is usually available (DVD, Blu-ray, HDTV, etc.), better screenshots are, of course, preferable and IMHO mandatory.

E.g. This shouldn't have passed the filter...

Windows paint is useless for what you are trying to do,  I uploaded this into Photoshop and saved on high setting.

The third image was was close in size for acceptance. So increasing it a little did not affect overall quality.
The middle image might make the increase without too much degradation.
The top is too small and is already poor quality. It wont make the transition as it will degrade too much when enlarged.

@NarniaisAwesome:

One last tip. Enlargement of any image, especially of a low-res one, is always undesirable. You'd better try to find a source with the best quality as possible. Reverse image search (e.g. Google) can be very helpful...
  • Your first image: 240x300 px ~ 17 KB
  • Image below: 728x1099 px ~ 140 KB

Tonto, thank you for that image!  So, from what you and the others are saying, is the problem that my images are too small to be accepted, rather than too big?

Not really too small but low resolution, resizing does not change the pixel count.
You need a program that can save at the same or similar size with high resolution.

NIA you may have missed it above....

Use this.

Pixlr

Play with it.
When you save the photo select PNG. Not the default jpeg.
It increased this photo fro 36KB (TOO SMALL) to 161KB!!!

Okay, one more question to ya'll... what is 'between 50kb and 20mb' in pixels?  I've tried looking it up but I can't find a straightforward answer.

File size is determined by the number of pixels so the aim is to find out how many pixels the image contains. Since the resolution is 300 dpi, it means that each inch is 300 pixels across. As the image is 8 inches wide that means there are 2,400 pixels in width (8 x 300). Likewise, as the image is 12 inches long, the image is 3,600 pixels in length (12 x 300). To get the total we multiply the breadth by the length and the answer is 8,640,000 pixels (2400 x 3600).

We now know how many pixels are in the image. So how do we get to file size. Well this is a grayscale image and we know from the section on image pixels that for a grayscale image each pixel is 8 bits or 1 byte in file size. So in total the A4 image of 8,640,000 pixels has a file size of 8,640,000 bytes or about 8.2 MB (this is because there are 1024 bytes in a kilobyte and 1024 kilobytes in a MB).

So it would be a whole lot easier if your editor asking you for an image big enough to fit the size he wants to print it at asked you for an 8 MB grayscale image. Or if he wanted it in RGB colour he would multiply that figure by three and ask you for a 24 MB image.

It's a Flock of info?

I opened this thread ready to suggest some solutions but it seems you've worked it out - I will re-iterate that MS Paint is awful and there are plenty of 3rd party (including free) alternatives.

That said, I'm glad things are working for you now, if you have any further trouble be sure to let us know :D

Okay, now that images work, I need to correct other people's mistakes!  A poster for a short has nothing to do with the film!  How can I request to have it deleted and replaced?

First upload the correct photo.
Then make the correct photo the poster image. (Edit Tags) (Suggest this as Primary Image)
Then request to delete the incorrect photo. (Report this)
