Help with fixing UFC 222

Hi!

I need some help cleaning up UFC 222.

I entered this live sports event as a TV Special last month (like I always do, like all previous UFC events are listed as), and it looked fine when I checked on it this weekend when the event took place, but today I saw that it is now entered as "Episode #1.1" in a new TV Series called UFC 222 that someone has created.

This is all kinds of confusing. I have no idea how someone managed to do this accidentally, since it would include a lot of deliberate edits to make this mess, so I want to check with you before I try to fix it :)

My suggestions:

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt7994012/ should be returned to a standalone TV Special.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt8071580/ should never have been created in the first place, but to keep any new information that has, I guess it should be merged into tt7994012 *after* the TV Special has been returned to normal.

Sounds good? Or is there a better way to do this?

Or maybe the TV Series is just an empty entry that the system created automatically if someone accidentally changed tt7994012 into a TV Episode..? That would explain how it became this messy, without anyone actually making all the weird edits deliberately :)

Either way, can you help me make these edits, or should I do them myself? If I do them myself I need to wait until tt7994012 has been returned back to a standalone TV Special before I merge tt8071580 into it, and I don't want another user doing edits at the same time that somehow recreates this weird mess :)

Or if the theory of the automatically created TV Series entry is correct, maybe tt8071580 should just be deleted after tt7994012 has been restored into a standalone TV Special..?

Sorry for making a wall of text on this small issue, but it's the first time I've seen this happen, and wanted to check with you before I'd accidentally make it even worse :)

Thanks!

Gustav,

You can correct this by submitting a Title Correction and a Keyword from the main title page, not from episode page #1.1. The title is currently stored in IMDb this way:

"UFC 222: Cyborg vs. Kunitskaya" (2018)

When you go to the Update Information for... page, scroll down to the Other Corrections section. Click the Title Corrections category.
Type the title this way:

UFC 222: Cyborg vs. Kunitskaya (2018) (TV)

In the explanation box, type a short statement why the title is being changed. Example: Correcting title format from TV series to TV special. You can also post the URL of this discussion page.

On the same submission, go to Keywords and type the following term:

tv-special

Acknowledge this yellow warning message ("There is a mismatch between the title type of the old and new titles.") by clicking the checkbox to the left of the following statement:

Warning understood, go ahead anyway.

Data on the episode page and the main page will combine into one page. When approved, give at least 2-3 days for processing.

(For what it's worth, on another matter, it appears a number of the UFC pages are mistakenly listed on IMDb as TV Movies. The pages can easily be corrected by adding tv-special to the Keywords section for each program.)

I hope this helps. Please write back if you have any more questions.

Ok, I'll try that, thanks!

Do you know if this will result in the new ID (tt8071580) to be used as the ID for the title..? Because it'd be a shame if the older, more correct ID (tt7994012) would get lost due to this erroneous edit someone submitted, since the first ID would be the page that everyone on the internet already has linked to.

I guess it's not a huge loss in this case, but changing IDs of an older, more popular title would be kinda sad, only because someone mistakenly changed the title type.

Maybe the old ID would still forward you to the new ID I guess... but still, I don't like things getting transferred to new IDs, and there should be a better way to do this if that's the case.

(And yes, most of them are listed as TV Movies since everyone (including me) thought that it would be enough to set the title description to TV Special in the beginning of the submission form for a new title, and that that choice would add the keyword automatically. More info here: https://getsatisfaction.com/imdb/topics/tv-special-keyword-should-be-added-automatically-from-title-... -- please upvote if you feel the same :) )

((Furthermore, there are still some older UFC events listed as TV Episodes in the "UFC on Fox" and "UFC Fight Night" TV Series, even though this has since been deemed incorrect by IMDb staff. No new events have been entered this way (since I enter most of them) and I've planned to create a ticket here to fix them all at once like we did with the main UFC TV series entry a couple of years ago, since I don't have the time to go and edit all 100+ episodes one by one from TV Episode to TV Special :) ))

As I may have mentioned earlier, the title merge will combine data from the episode page into one page. After the merger has been processed, review the new page for any missing information.

Also, to clarify my previous response to TV specials, I was referring to the one-night-only, stand-alone programs, not any of UFC TV series pages or their episodes.

Thanks for writing back.

Yes, but it will merge into one (1) title, and I was only wondering if you knew what ID that title would get by using your method, the old or the new, as your instructions seem to tell the system that the TV Series should be kept (as a TV Special), and that it would then proceed to "eat" the TV Episode in the automatic merge.

I was just thinking if there was a better way to approach it all, to insure that the old (correct) ID was kept in the merge process, which was why my approach was to break out the TV Episode into a TV Special first, and then merge the TV Series into that.

But alas, it doesn't matter much if the ID was to change, it just seemed unnecessary if it was to do that by using your method -- and in either case the actual data from both titles should merge just fine of course.

And yes, I was also talking about these stand-alone programs. There is no UFC on Fox TV series for example, it was just that someone kept entering these events as TV Episodes before I started submitting them as separate titles. Same was true for the numbered events (like UFC 222) before, but they were broken out into TV Specials/Movies by staff in this old thread: https://getsatisfaction.com/imdb/topics/how-should-ufc-ppv-events-be-listed

I entered a comment in that thread about also fixing "UFC on Fox", but it has gone unnoticed by staff and I just hadn't gotten to making a new effort on that yet. If you have a trick to break all those out into 137 normal titles instead of TV Episodes, please let me know -- but I don't want to go through them all and do a title + keyword edit on each one, so staff probably needs to wave their magic wand there :)

(Same is true about the missing TV Special keyword on the was you were talking about, I wasn't very keen on going through the hundreds of titles and adding the keyword one by one, and instead offered to make a list of all the incorrect ones, but it went unnoticed by staff.)

Uggh, I just noticed that someone is still adding new titles to the "UFC on Fox" TV Series, even some random numbered events like UFC .

So there are now multiple entries for a lot of UFC events, and a lot more work than just breaking out titles, as they need to be merged into the correct TV Special/Movies titles that already exist. A big mess.

For example UFC 216 (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt7492584/) that already had a TV Special entry here (created long before the TV episode was added): http://www.imdb.com/title/tt7467368/

Yaay for data cleaning :)

Re: The tt number

In this case, I believe the tt number for the updated title would be tt8071580, which would be the former TV Series page number.

Perhaps an IMDb representative can confirm this matter.

Thank you, Will!

Do you have any input on how to fix the other UFC TV Series that is filled with TV episodes that are duplicates of TV Movie/Specials already existing in the database?

See my comment above, starting at the line "And yes, I was also talking about these stand-alone programs" and downwards through the next comment below it.

Do we need to go through them all and rename them into the already existing titles, effectively merging them, or is there an easier way for you "back stage"? Going through the normal submission process on 137 titles isn't all that fun :)

Either way, someone needs to find each correctly formatted title of course, so some input/detective work from us the users is probably needed, but let us know if we could provide a list for you to process semi-automatically, or if really need to go through the manual submission process for every title.

If we do, please at least give us a formal "This should to be done" so that we can reference this thread in our submissions, so that they are not denied. 137 title changes from a single user might raise some flags, I dunno :)

Hi Gustav,

I'm sorry to break this to you but unfortunately there isn't, we do not have an automatic match and merge tool so it would be the same process internally for us as for a user externally which sadly we could not prioritize given our limited resources. I can provide you with a formal "This should be done" though! Let me know if you notice any problems with your submissions.

Will

Thanks Will, I'll get started with that momentarily :)

In the meantime, UFC 223 needs your help just like UFC 222 did. It has been submitted as a TV Series all by itself, with a single episode.

I've tried submitting edits to change the type to TV Movie/Special -- but they're either stuck in a long queue or have been ignored.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt8183162/

And maybe you can try to reach out to the user submitting these erroneously (I reckon it's the same person) to stop these entries needing such a clean-up every time.

Thanks!

Hi again Will,

Well, it keeps happening. I submitted UFC 224 as a TV Special and it was entered as such at first, but someone has now changed that into a TV Series with a single Episode attached: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt8279000/

Can you work your magic and fix this? And can you perhaps check who keeps changing these over and over again, and let them know they are submitting these erroneously..?

Thanks in advance

Hi Gustav -

Our staff are currently investigating the title and why it was listed as a TV Series/Episode, in the meantime, the title has now been adjusted appropriately to a TV Special listing, see: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt8279000/?ref_=tt_ov_inf

Thanks again for your report!

Hi again,

Thank you for fixing UFC 224. Now UFC 225 needs the same fixing: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt8440450/

Same scenario here, I added this two weeks ago as a TV Special, and looking at it earlier this week, it was still listed as a TV Special.

But today it's listed as a TV Series with a single episode, presumably changed by another user.

Is there a way to lock the title types, or otherwise stop this from happening over and over?

Thanks in advance! :)

Hi Gustav,

I've been investigating further and it looks like there are underlying technical reasons why this title needs to be listed as a TV series/episode for the time being although this is the incorrect title type. Unfortunately we cannot edit this until after the title has aired but once this date has passed we can convert the listing to the correct TV special type though.

We are looking to rectify this fault as soon as possible and I'm sorry that I can't be of more assistance at this moment in time.

Regards,
Will

Oh, how odd. It stayed a TV Special for at least a week before it "turned" :)

Also, it doesn't seem to affect any other UFC titles that I submitted at the same time, with pretty much the same exact type of data:

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt8440372/
https://www.imdb.com/title/tt8440522/

Only the numbered titles (UFC 2XX) has been affected by it.

Dunno if that helps or not, and surely you're already on top of the reason anyhow :)

Thanks for getting back to me, and please let me know if there's anything I can do differently when submitting these titles.

Have a great week!
Gustav

Hi Gustav -

Thanks for your additional observations.  I have passed along your comments and as Will mentioned above, our staff are looking to rectify this display fault as soon as possible.  In the meantime, rest assured that once the episode airs we can then correct the title type.

Hi again,

Just a reminder to fix the title type of UFC 225 which now has aired a week ago: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt8440450/

Thanks! :)

Hi Gustav -

Thanks for the reminder, the title page has now been moved to be listed as an episode of the "Coutdown to UFC" series.  Thanks again, we appreciate it!

Hmm, that seems like the wrong decision.

This entry (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt8440450/) is the actual UFC 225 event, and should be listed as a TV Special as determined above, just as all the previous UFC events, eg https://www.imdb.com/title/tt8279000/.

"Countdown to UFC" is a 45 minute talk show presenting the upcoming event, usually aired a week or so before the event, with guests and experts being interviewed. These should probably be listed as a TV Series, since they share the same format from episode to episode. But this entry is not that episode, and there does not seem to be an episode submitted to IMDb for this event to "Countdown to UFC", if there was ever aired one (I don't know, I rarely watch these).

However, as per above, the actual UFC events (where the sport is actually performed) should be listed TV Specials since they are stand-alone events/galas, like the Superbowl or any other major sport event.

The original problem with this title was that it changed from a TV Special to a TV Series a single episode attached, but should be returned to a stand-alone TV Special, completely separated from "Countdown to UFC".

Thanks!

And as a quick callback to when it was decided these events were to be listed as TV Specials (and not collected together as episodes in a TV Series) is found in this thread: https://getsatisfaction.com/imdb/topics/how-should-ufc-ppv-events-be-listed

It's that time again. UFC 227 aired yesterday, and needs to be changed back into a TV Special, just as the past titles.

Any information when you've fixed your schedule function so titles no longer has to be erroneously set to a TV-series until after it has aired..?

Hi again,

Can you clean up UFC 229 the same way?

https://www.imdb.com/title/tt9041764/

I tried submitting the title (type) change normally (181010-181830-514000), but it seems to have been rejected since it hasn't gone through for 10 days.

Thanks
