Help with existing User ID

I believe an existing User ID on IMDb is an older IMDb account before I signed up.  My current User ID actually is an old name that I no longer use; and I would like to be able to use the User ID that I was using before; but, when I try to change to that, it naturally says it already exists.  How would I go about reclaiming that UserID if indeed it is mine.  Does anyone know?

Hi Chip,

Please keep in mind that once a User ID has been used on any account, it cannot be used again or by another account, regardless of whether the account has been deleted or not.
If you'd like to use the original User ID, you will need to use the account which you had previously claimed the User ID with.

Ironically, I don't know what account that was.  It was the account that I automatically linked to when I used my old phone.  I think it was the same as my primary email account with IMdB now, but that one has the old email address based user name.  So, if I understand you correctly, unless I know what account I was logging in under the old username, there's no way I can use it now, even if I still have access to that email address account.  Does that pretty much sum it up?   It seems to me that for a very long time, I didn't have to use an email account with that first account on IMdB nor did I need to log into it, it seemed to recognize me in some other way.  You wouldn't know if that was possible in the earlier days.  I only ran into the problem, and didn't notice right away, once I added an email address, and logged in.  I did that fairly recently so I could add feedback and comments.  (I think it's related to how IMdB tracked people in early days when they didn't specify an email address, which I did for years, not leaving comments or feedback, and only using it to look up information.  I recall, at some point it started remembering the movies and people I looked up; though I hadn't assigned an email or log in to it..  This was for many years, and I only noticed recently, like about 6 months ago.  Anyway... (sigh)

Thank you for responding; as you can see I am still keenly interested in getting back my old user name.  The current one is actually created from an older email account I had been using.  I had been logged into it and changed to my current email address... which alas, I think was the account under which I had my old username.  (sigh)  I think the exception to the rule is that if the username was created from an email address, and one updates the email, one loses all connections to any account one might have had under that 'changed' email address, as most companies allow updating email addresses.  (I ran into a similar issue with Lowes and a MyLowe's card under an old email address.  In that case, my solution was to log into the old email address, and update to the new one.  All accounts were merged at that point.  Magic!)
