Looking for a George Segal cop show. I remember there were painters who tried to steal typewriters from the Police Station.

According to his filmography, Segal's appearance as a TV series regular in a cop/detective series was "Murphy's Law" in 1988-1989. With a few exceptions, his work was mostly in film in the 1960s and 70s.

I'm not sure if that's the show you're referring to.

If you know it's George Segal, not sure why you don't browse the filmography yourself. Here's how:
https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001719/
On his page (or any Name (person) page), the link Explore More is high in the right column. Clicking it reveals:

Click on any of the Filmography choices EXCEPT Job, which takes you lower on the same page. Then you get:
https://www.imdb.com/filmosearch/?sort=year&explore=title_type&role=nm0001719

A couple of choices later, and:
https://www.imdb.com/filmosearch/?explore=title_type&role=nm0001719&ref_=filmo_ref_yr&sort=year,desc&mode=detail&page=1&job_type=actor&title_type=tvEpisode&release_date=1965%2C1975

As GMJ said, he has no TV credits for the time you're remembering.

But what you describe sounds like a comedy, so removing all restrictions except Actor and Genres Crime & Comedy, I'm going to suggest:
Fun with Dick and Jane (1977)

The rest I'll leave to you.

Thanks for the replies. Perhaps I'm wrong about George Segal because I've looked at the filmography and nothing rings a bell.
