Genre addition not working

I have tried adding the action genre to Collateral (2004) many times but it didn't get approved even once.

Can someone help, since as per the IMDb genre guidelines and even technically this film qualifies for the action genre as it has numerous destructive action scenes that include car crashes, shootouts, glass-breaks, chases and a lot more that takes up a predominate part of the duration.

I dunno, Metacritic does not tag it Action, but Rotten Tomatoes does. Google has it without the action genre too.

I consider it an action movie! It's like a James Bond Movie in the action sequences, but he has no license to Kill. Just a contract to Kill!!!

I agree with you.
Now, will IMDb?

Everybody has their definition of these different genres, but I don’t feel that Collateral is ”action” in a way I understand it. Like with (e.g.) Heat, it’s probably: Crime, Drama, Thriller. Action is Bronson, Norris, Sly and Arnold. Those type of films. Not Michael Mann.

But IMDb could disagree, or agree.

That is where everyone gets it wrong. Only because a director like Michael Mann has made it doesn't mean it can't be action. Instead of looking at the action genre in terms of story and themes, it should be seen with the presence of action scenes more than anything else. I don't think you'd have ever heard of an action film without action scenes.

And there are countless hitman action movies available worldwide. Collateral is just a bit more dramatic but fits in the action template well because according to the definition of action, characters are put through physical challenges that involve violence, extended fights and frantic chases. What else do you need?

People tend to limit an action film's boundaries by assigning darker and deeper themes to only genres like crime, drama and thriller and then say "they don't make quality action movies anymore". Collateral won't have qualified for the action genre (it's not just mine but many others' opinion too) had it not featured those prolonged action sequences (especially the last 35 minutes, I purchased the DVD just to confirm that).

Mannish,
Wait for an IMDb employee and disregard what he says. Basing a Genre tag on who the director is, or what actor is in it is absolutely absurd.

Ed, again your rude behavior raises its (ugly) head.

This issue is not about ”directors” (any director can do any genres), it’s about genres and IMDb has certain guidelines for them - and these guidelines are not necessarily what people feel they should be.

Can’t remember every film from Mann at the moment, but I’ve a feeling that ”action” genre is not listed to any fims by Mann. And usually for a reason. But someone could check, of course.

The way he uses "disregard" does come off as a bit subversive.

Hi Manish,

Thanks for your post.

As this thread has shown, Genre's are a very subjective piece of information.

If an editor has rejected the addition of this information, then they they do not believe this is eligible for listing on the title.

Remember, you can see the status of your contribution in your history here:

I hope this helps.

So am I supposed to think that things are going to remain the same as they are?

Editors, I have waited quite a long time. Please have another look into this matter and think of rethinking what you might be considering incorrect.

I am 100% sure, as per all eligibility guidelines, this film qualifies for the action genre. Action really makes an important part of the film and that's true. Just crime-drama-thriller doesn't do justice to describing the film's content. The action isn't as low as The Godfather or Shawshank Redemption. It IS an integral part of the story and is pretty much like every other hitman action film where blows are traded, stuff is blown up and bullets are exchanged: and that too in plenty.

Please. I requested even one time before but perhaps you found me too harsh. This time, I am requesting you to add the genre. The addition gets rejected within seconds because you have locked the addition. Then why allow us the privilege of submission at all? If you're only going to avoid updates from users, then why are you even letting us edit? Please, try to understand.
