Fox News Shows/Hostess

Hello Fellow IMDB Users,

Lately I have been working hard to update a lot of the political shows on this site. When it comes to Fox News episodes are usually updated and sometimes the cast, or at least the lead anchor is already, which is a good sign.

One thing I've noticed is that female talent are referred to as "Hostess" or "Co-Hostess". This is not a common term used. I don't know if it is from international users or dated gender stereotypes, but I think "Host" and "Co-Host" are fine, male or female.

Megyn Kelly when she was with the network, Martha MacCallum and others refer to themselves as the host while on air, for further verification.

I'm not sure who is updating with these character names, but moving forward I will continue to add them as Host and Co-Host.

Kevin: With regard to television programs, I agree that the term "host" is usually used in a gender-neutral way. It's rare to see female TV presenters called "hostesses".

So I agree with you that a female television presenter should be listed as "Herself - Host" rather than "Herself - Hostess".

I agree. I always just use "Host", whether it's a male or female.

Hi Will,

It seems this problem is continuing with not only Fox News shows, but other networks as well. Megyn Kelly Today had someone update her title to "Herself - Hostess" as well.

Is there any way for IMDB to reject submissions with this information. This is not a title that anyone professionally uses.

Unfortunately, I have a full-time job so I cannot monitor every single show, but I try to make the corrections I can.

Hi Kevin -

Please note that Character pages are not actively moderated by staff, however, when problems are reported our staff can assist in making updates/corrections.  We appreciate that you have been able to make the corrections when you can, if you don't have the resources to correct every entry you find, I would encourage you to just make a note of the title and add it to a list, you can then later provide your list to our staff here and we can then modify the character page for you.

Michelle,
Kevin wasn't talking about Character pages. You might want to re-read his post.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled One User Keeps Adding Character Name "Hostess" To Talk/Political Shows.

Hello IMDB Users,

I brought this topic up a couple months ago, and IMDB agreed with my opinion, but it still seems to be happening.

It was usually just limited to FOX News shows, but recently with Megyn Kelly Today (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt7406344/?ref_=nv_sr_1) one user keeps adding the title of Herself - Hostess for any female anchors on a show.

Hostess is not a title used by any show or network in the US or the UK. I do not believe it is even used by restaurants anymore.

Hosts, male or female, should be Himself - Host or Herself - Host. No need for further segregation.

Is there any way for IMDB to reject submissions that contain this information? I try to monitor as many shows as I can, but I also have a real world job to focus on.

Michelle: May I suggest that the software add a warning if a character name includes the string "hostess" -- or especially if the character name contains both "Herself" and "hostess"?

The warning could indicate that female television presenters are usually referred to in IMDb as "host", not "hostess".

But it could be a yellow (bypassable) warning to allow a specific person to be identified as a hostess if there is a good reason to do so.

This isn't really a matter for the character pages on IMDb, because we are dealing with nonfiction "self" roles and trying to standardize the descriptions found after the word "Herself". Self roles normally don't get character pages, if ever.

Hi IMDB,

Is there a main editor I can address this with?

I recently spent a lot of time updating guides (changing from Hostess to Host) and they were either rejected by this site or re-edited before I could recheck.

Brianna Keilar - http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2256626/?ref_=tt_ov_st_sm
Megyn Kelly - http://www.imdb.com/name/nm2154335/?ref_=nv_sr_1
Katy Tur - http://www.imdb.com/name/nm5243148/?ref_=nv_sr_1
Ana Cabrera - http://www.imdb.com/name/nm6152492/?ref_=nv_sr_1

These are just a few of the names where someone went in and edited every Herself - Host credit to Herself - Hostess, and when I corrected them, they somehow got changed back.

There is no such title as Hostess. No woman has ever referred to themselves has a Hostess, nor as a TV show called them that.

Hi Kevin -

Thanks for reporting these filmography page listings and incorrect "Hostess" credits, I have filed a ticket for a clean-up request and included gromit82's suggestion regarding how to help prevent these inaccurate character names from being submitted.  I have also reviewed your most recent post here,  and will reply to that thread with any updates regarding the ticket filed and for confirmation when the clean-up has been completed.  Thanks again for your report!

Hi Kevin,

Thanks again, we've cleaned up these name pages where appropriate and we've also added in an additional warning as suggested by gromit82 which fires when herself - hostess/co-hostess is submitted to the site.

Regards,
Will
