Dan,

Thanks for making this thread.

I would like to officially request taking the following poll:
Oscars 2019 — Best Motion Picture

I will, however, refrain from making that discussion thread until the nominations have been announced.

If it counts as a minor poll, I would also like to request:
Oscars 2019 — Best Visual Effects

Actually, Sonu claimed it three days before you on the Polls for the 2019 Academy Awards thread. The issue is neither of you followed the instructions to "Please refrain from suggesting polls for any of the 2019 Oscar categories until the nominations are announced." at 8:30 AM PST on 22 January 2019. Hence, the confusion and duplicate poll suggestions in a number of categories. To be fair, both of you weren't the only ones who jumped the gun.

The nominations will be announced on Tuesday, 22 January, 2019, at which time a discussion thread with more information will be posted.
For me (and I think for most of the poll board members) Dan's message on Tuesday 22 January (the exact hour was never mentioned) triggered the opening of the Oscar polls, after which I as well as all the others including yourself reserved their polls. By 8:30 AM PST on that day, all major categories were already taken.

I'd like to make the poll for Best Supporting Actress and, if it's considered to be minor, Best Documentary Feature (if it's not, I'll do Best Documentary Short). Regardless of whether it's minor or not, if someone wants "Best Documentary," just let me know and I'll do the short doc.

I'd like to suggest allowing a newer authors, or especially an author whose polls haven't racked up a lot of votes, to do "Best Lead Actress," since it hasn't been taken yet. I was hoping we could put a few of the big awards aside for such authors but we could at least keep Lead Actress open. 'Just a suggestion for those who agree.

I don't know what Dan intends with major and minor, but I guess major would include at least Best Picture, Director, Actor/Actress, Screenplay x 2 (=Big Five) and probably Supporting Actor/Actress (ie. the first 8 categories that Dan lists).

Oh, sorry, Eagles; I didn't see that you chose Best Actress. I think when I started my post, you hadn't posted yet but it took me so long to finish my post because my cat kept jumping on my laptop, lol, that by the time that I actually submitted my post, you had posted your choices. I'm glad you're doing Best Actress. I was hoping someone besides those of us old-timers with a gazillion polls and votes, lol, would get the chance to do one of the really big categories.

I would suggest linking from polls to this thread so voters can find more Oscar polls.

I would also suggest linking to the show page to let polls appear on that page: [link=tt9168816]

Dan, please correct the reference to the "2019 Golden Globes Award" in your suggested question to the Oscars; I'd prefer "91st Oscars" or using the above link.

Please also remove this part, which is not relevant:

This should say "Academy Award" if it refers to a single award. Most contributors have used the plural form "Academy Awards", which is also acceptable when referring to the ceremony.

Last year urbanemovies made a list with all the Oscar 2018 related polls.
See here: https://www.imdb.com/list/ls021216429/

Maybe it's better to linking to a list then to a thread...? I believe it's better.

And maybe it's good to make a format for linking to the Oscars 2019 list and to the Oscar Show page. So we don't have to think about a line and everybody can use the same format.

Dan, Here are two possible ways to cleanly link to The Oscars (2019) show page, thus letting polls appear on that page and letting them take advantage of high award season traffic on The Oscars (2019) page, award season cross-promotion and possibly increase overall vote totals (with your approval).

option #1 - The Oscars (2019) page poll link as an IMDb promo sentence example
A unified The Oscars (2019) show hyperlink and IMDb's Award Central Oscars Guide. hyperlink sentence (placed below award specific question and above discussion/poll list hyperlink)

Get complete The Oscars (2019) coverage on IMDb's Award Central Oscars Guide.

example: Oscars 2018 — Best Original Song
[b]Get complete [link=tt9168816] coverage on IMDb's Award Central [link=https://www.imdb.com/oscars/] Oscars Guide.[/link][/b]

option#2 - The Oscars (2019) page poll link integrated into question example

Which of The Oscars (2019) nominees for the 'Academy Award for Best Animated Feature' do you think should win?

example: Oscars 2019 — Best Animated Feature Film
[b]Which of [link=tt9168816] nominees for the [link=https://www.imdb.com/event/ev0000003/2019/1/] 'Academy Award for Best Animated Feature'[/link] do you think should win?[/b]

I think either of Urb's ideas would work well.

Also, I'd suggest changing "Which of the nominees of the 2019 Academy Award for [Name of the Category] do you think should win?" to the following:

Which of the nominees for the 2019 Academy Award for [Name of the Category] do you think should win?

(An award can't nominate anyone and people don't receive nominations of an award so, grammatically, "for" is the better word, I think.)

Thank you, Dan, for organizing all of this and posting the great FAQ. : )

Good luck everyone guys who are participating on making these polls. I thought I would see some new authors participating on this. But, unfortunately, that's not happening. That's why I posted about 1 PS per user. And nobody cared about that. Great!

Anyway, I have something to say, specially to the IMDb Poll admin. I am joining to a new company from tomorrow (January 23). The work pressure will be pretty high. And I may not be an active member of this community after that.

Dan, please take control of my "Home Page Poll" FAQ. The dates are as of India Time.

DPSG, all my pending PS will be active and I would be grateful if you consider them like other polls.

I'll let you know if I can make the "Favorite Oscar Winner" poll this year.

It has been an wonderful journey and I enjoyed every moments with you guys.

Also, please check for duplicate or later made PS of my primary PS made by someone else. It hurts when a later made PS gets published over mine, because it takes time and effort to create those PS.

Dibyayan, you will be missed, I hope you can be around from time to time.

While I never do Oscar categories suggestions unless its necessary, I agree with your one poll per person suggestion to let more people participate, and only if there is not enough people then allowing for a second one. It may be late for that, but in any case.

DC,

Best of luck with your new job. We will miss your contributions and carry on. Please be sure to stop by periodically as time permits.

We probably should have limited the Oscar polls to one per person. However, the genie is out of the bottle.

I will take control of the "Home Page Poll" FAQ.

Dibby, of course we'll consider your suggested polls. The poll page wouldn't be the same poll page without your polls. Many congratulations (and bravo!) on your new job but whenever you have a free moment, please stop by and see us. I'll miss you!

Oh, and I didn't see your post about one poll suggestion per person but I agree that's a great idea and I was hoping to see more new poll authors get some Oscar polls, as well. On that note, I included a note on my GS post for my Oscar poll that if a relatively new author, or an author whose polls haven't received a whole lot of votes, want to do one of the Oscar categories that I have to let me know. If you know any such author, you can let him or her know.

By the way, for selfish and nostalgic reasons, lol, I hope you're able to make the "Favorite Oscar Winner" poll. As we've talked about, I like staying up late on Oscar night with you and a few other pollsters, making polls and talking about the ceremony. If you absolutely can't, I nominate the idea that you choose to whom to bequeath it (and I take myself out of the running because, for the sake of nostalgia, I'll probably be busy making my annual "Most Earned Standing Ovation" or "Memorable Moment" poll, lol). :)

There are at least three users who have tried to post categories that other authors have claimed in this thread. You can see them linked in Dan's list. If you wish, you could suggest to one of them that they do Best Doc.

Suzy,

Thank you for such kind words. Please keep your Oscar PS. It has been a long since your last poll was published.

At this moment, I am not sure if I can make "Fav Winner" poll. If I can't, I would like to refer that to Chandra Bhanu Solanki, who made GG 2019 Fav Winner poll.

I'll let you know my final decision that day.

Ruby, despite your scruples I shamelessly took a photo from Google to insert it here. :)

My mother makes always makes these things for New Year's Day. She puts an almond in exactly one of them. Each family member choses his "New Year's roll", and the one with the almond is expected to have a lucky year. Looking back at the years it actually seems to work, lol.

DC - Long story short, may you have as much as luck in your new job as if you found a magic almond!

PS: Oscars 2019 — Historic Breakthrough of the Year

The 2019 award season may very well be the year of the royal or noble award nominated performance. The year includes Oscar-nominated performances by Olivia Colman, Emma Stone and Rachel Weisz in The Favourite (2018) and the BAFTA-nominated and SAG-nominated performance by Margot Robbie in Mary Queen of Scots (2018) among others.

- P.S. Favorite Noble Oscar-Nominated Performance?

Bradley Cooper's A Star Is Born (2018) is the latest film to garner a rare actor-producer dual Oscar nomination. As  of 2019, only seven people and twelve movies have "officially" secured a rare dual acting and producing Oscar nominations for the same film.

I completely agree and just thought I would post while still in Oscar nomination mode. I understand the priorities to publish as the Oscar season unfolds: all the 2019 award polls, 2019 nomination polls, 2019 Oscar specific polls, 2019 winner polls and 2019 Oscar postmortem. They are available, if and when you find any other content options lagging.

Dan Dassow, I updated this poll suggestion with historic Oscar 2019 winner breakthroughs. This poll suggestion seems timely and relevant given the number news reports and articles geared toward this storyline.

May I suggest an update to the intro of this thread?

The idea of adding the Take the other 2019 Oscar polls link is to make all the polls easily accesible to anyone interested. However, when clicking the link and opening this thread, what the user sees is a long and (for an average user) probably tedious texto with a lot of things like format of the polls, linking examples, a list of authors and lists that may or may not be used etceterea.

All of these is of no interest to a casual voter that, by clicking the link, would expect a simple lists of all available polls.

I suggest that all that info is moved to an answer in the thread (in any case most if not all the pending polls are already correctly formated and if something fails we on the board can easily correct it) and simply making a list with the linked available polls with no further information.

I believe this will mean a lot more votes for everyone than the current format of the thread, and a better experience for users.
