FAQ: Key Threads - IMDb Poll FAQs Index

=========================================================

I'd like to thank you for your contributions and amazing
suggestions.

With new poll authors arriving all the time, how do we minimize duplicate/redundant polls?

When you finish making your suggestion, the poll board veterans can often tell you with their prodigious memories whether there is a poll that is too close to your suggestion. But you may have already put a lot of hard work into your suggestion to get to that point, so I'd like to suggest an alternative way.

Let's say you're you want to make a poll that includes some element of the IMDb Top 250, if you google search

site:imdb.com/poll top 250

You are looking for polls that include the terms top 250 you'll see we have several already. Yours may or may not be novel, but at least you'll have some relevant info to judge.

There's no downside in proposing a poll, so if you've got a new spin on an existing idea, by all means go for it.

Any other tips from our experts?

Thanks, hb. The Google search tip is very helpful. http//iimdbcom/Photos/CMSIcons/emoticons/basic2/yesgif

There's also the Poll Watch, which, with so many polls now, may take a while to get through, but there are several ways in which it could be helpful to check for duplicates: for example, there's a list of just the Friday Face-Off polls. http://mypollwatch.blogspot.com/2014/05/friday-face-off-polls.html

A number of the current polls are reprises of a daily poll. You can find a complete list of daily polls here:
https://web.archive.org/web/20150427204618/http://www.imdb.com/poll/questions

When repeating daily polls, please consider doing the following:
1. Link to the original poll.
2. Credit the author of the original poll, unless you were the original author.
3. Update the poll to ensure it is still relevant.

Here are live polls that I suggested which are repeats of the daily poll:

hb,

I frequently make use of the Google search that you mention above:
site:imdb.com/poll top 250
https://www.google.com/#q=site:imdb.com%2Fpoll+top+250

The lists that I provide are also useful, but they have the limitation that they will usually be out of date.

Live Polls: Alphabetical

Poll Suggestions Alphabetical

Both the Google search and my lists also have the limitation that they depend on a key word. However, authors may phrase the same poll question differently enough that at first glance, they may appear to be different polls. This is where the collective memory of the regular contributors to the IMDb Poll message board can help the most.

Finally, we need to be considerate to new contributors when they suggest a poll that has already gone live. I generally write something along the lines:

Thank you for your poll suggestion. Unfortunately, there is currently a live poll very similar to the one you propose. (I provide the title and a link to the poll.)

For future reference, please review this alphabetical list of live polls and alphabetical list of poll suggestions.

Please consider making other poll suggestions in the future, make constructive suggestions to other poll suggestions and vote in other polls.
