Live Poll: Face-Off: 1954-1963: The Foreign Directors' Decade

Before New Hollywood would contribute to raise the artistic profile of American cinema over the world, the flag of cinematic excellence was certainly raised by four foreigners... who weren't newcomers in the late 50s, but whose artistic peak was certainly reached during the glorious decade that goes from 1954 to 1963, (they would still make masterpieces after but that's another story).

Considering a series of parameters such as quality over quantity and critical acclaim rather than commercial (without diminishing the latter), which of these four directors owed the 1954-1963 period?

It had nothing to do with the settings of his film... unlike Wilder, Hitchcock always kept his British citizenship so maybe I should have replaced "foreign" by "non-American" but I wanted to honor the fact that these achievments came from outsiders (from an American perspective)

First, I have to make an apology for a mistake: “Roman Holiday” was William Wyler and not Billy Wilder.
But your argument was further weaken when you had used the word “outsider” when you had said,”unlike Wilder, Hitchcock always kept his British citizenship so maybe I should have replaced "foreign" by "non-American" but I wanted to honor the fact that these achievments came from outsiders (from an American perspective).” Hitchcock was never considered an outsider. Brits are rarely considered that. And all theHitchcock films you had mention were made by American studios as a part of the American movie studio system. I’m a huge fan of Hitchcock and I know he was a part of the American studio movie system. He was no outsider. And Hitchcock almost never wrote the screenplays of his own movies. At least Billy Wilder ether wrote or co-wrote the screenplays of almost all the films he directed, and more he didn’t direct. Wilder is considered one of the greatest screenwriters of all time as well as being a great director. And let’s not forget that wilder directed such classics as :(before your time period) Lost Weekend, Double Indemnity, Sunset Blvd. , ( within your timeline): Kiss Me, Stupid, Irma la Douce, “One, Two, Three “, The Apartment, Some Like It Hot, Witness for the Prosecution (and wrote the screenplay adaption of Agthia Christie’s play), Love in the Afternoon, The Spirit of St. Louis, The Seven Year Itch, Sabrina, and Stalag 17 .(After your time period) The Fortune Cookie. And I can go about Wyler, and others too. Wyler’s “Ben Hur” is my favorite film and I could on about his use of visual metaphors and angles he had used in that film and in “The Best Years Of Our Lives” and “Roman Holiday” and “The Desperate Hours”.
What most people tend ignore is main stream American Hollywood is made up of work from many people who were born outside of the USA. Can I say Charlie Chaplin? In the case of Wilder and others on this list: “The Talent That Fled From Hitler and Ended Up In Hollywood”* that many didn’t immigrate by choice but we’re actually fleeing persecution. After the war, some chose to go back to Europe. Others chose to stay in the USA. And Valentino was Sicilian. I can mention other American Hollywood stars, Garbo, Hope, who were born outside of the USA. How can you something as American based on citizenship when such a large portion of it was work from people were not born in America?

* Actually I don’t know where I’m going to go with that list. I might include the founder of Universal pictures who was German, Carl Laemmle, (Wyler’s Mother was Laemmle’s cousin, and in 1922, she immigrated, with William in tow, to America, to work for her cousin). But Carl was in the USA before Hitler came to power; and therefore, wasn’t fleeing him.
