External Links not working correctly - help?

I have recently launched the website - www.amusings.co.uk - for what was previously my blog of Film and Theatre reviews.

I previously linked across to my Film reviews here on IMDB as part of the External Links section for each film.

I have attempted to do this since launching the website last week and the links are not working correctly for some reason.

Take, for instance, my Avengers: Age of Ultron review. The original full URL for the review is:

http://www.amusings.co.uk/#!AVENGERS-AGE-OF-ULTRON-FILM-REVIEW/c16ee/553662810cf21fee133375f5

When linked to directly, it works fine, and does so on other sites including Facebook etc.

However, for some reason, once posted on your external links, it doesn't work and instead goes to the homepage.

If you go to the external reviews page for Age of Ultron (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2395427/externalreviews?ref_=tt_ov_rt) and scroll down to 'A-musings [Kyle Pedley]' and click on the review you'll see what I mean.

I tried editing the entry to see if it was a mistake in the URL somewhere but this wasn't the case - the amendment was rejected as the URL was identical.

I then tried tiny URL and Google shortener, however these were also rejected as they are redirectors.

Could you please advise and assist as linking on IMDB.com is an important part of the website, and worked fine previously.

Kyle: I see part of the problem, but not enough to solve it yet.

The URL for your review at http://www.amusings.co.uk/#!AVENGERS-AGE-OF-ULTRON-FILM-REVIEW/c16ee/553662810cf21fee133375f5 contains an exclamation mark (between the pound sign and the word AVENGERS).

When one clicks on your entry in the External Reviews on IMDb, which does include the exclamation mark, it gets converted into the following:
http://www.amusings.co.uk/#%21AVENGERS-AGE-OF-ULTRON-FILM-REVIEW/c16ee/553662810cf21fee133375f5

Note that the exclamation mark is replaced by %21 which is the percent-encoding for the exclamation mark. See https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Percent-encoding for an explanation of percent-encoding.

I don't know where to go from here in solving your problem, though.

Hi Gromit,

Thank you so much for taking the time to reply and for your help!

I'm very grateful that the cause of the issue has been figured out, but not very technically adept, so not sure how to go about rectifying this. I know the website builder I have used requires the #! in the url's for the purposes of google analytics etc.

Hopefully yourself or someone else will be able to find a way to help resolve this!

Thanks again.

Hi Kyle -

I didn't see your Review listed on the title page, if you are trying to resubmit your URL, you will need to replace the exclamation with URL encode %21 that gromit82 referenced and we'll see if that works.

Hi Michelle,

I have already tried doing that and that is why the link was not working in the first place - when I replace the ! with the %21 as IMDB was already doing, the link breaks and re-routes to the home page.

Look:

http://www.amusings.co.uk/#!AVENGERS-AGE-OF-ULTRON-FILM-REVIEW/c16ee/553662810cf21fee133375f5

http://www.amusings.co.uk/#%21AVENGERS-AGE-OF-ULTRON-FILM-REVIEW/c16ee/553662810cf21fee133375f5

As you can see it is the percent encoding which is causing the link to break. I have re-submitted the review under a truncated URL but that doesn't seem to be getting approved.

Hi Kyle -

I'm going to have a data editor take a look here and see if they have a recommendation for how you can submit the URL so that it will redirect to your exact review (and not the home page).  As soon as I her back from them I will post the information here.

Thanks Michelle, that would be very much appreciated.

It would need to preferably be an outcome that I can easily replicate in future when I upload other Film reviews etc.

Kindest Regards,

Kyle

Hi Kyle -

Just noting an Update that your Review link is now listed on the title page, see here.

You should now be able to submit External Review links with the exclamation mark without any trouble in our Update system.
