Can someone help me with the name of a 1950's sci-fi movie?

This one is really bugging me. Not much to go on, and I last saw it nearly forty years ago. The plot had something to do with landing on an alien planet either voluntarily or by force. There were at least three men and one woman aboard the ship from Earth. The only scene I can recall is one where they are trying to hurriedly escape for reasons I'm not certain.

I distinctly remember them trying to ascend a conical-shaped building that had a flat walkway which spiraled around the structure to the top where (I think) their spacecraft was (similar to "This Island Earth") docked. Along this walkway were round portals about 8" in diameter set at about ten foot intervals where a black, tar-like substance would ooze from in order to prevent them from escaping. I believe one of the men got caught in it and perished.

I have no more to go on except that it was definitely an American film with no subtitles or dubbing and it was filmed in black and white. Thank you.
