Bechdel Test

I thought that it would be helpful (as well as nice) if one could see if a movie passes the Bechdel Test or not. Would that be possible to add to the general information box? Or perhaps make it a search criteria? More (real, not stereotypical) women in movies ought to be i everybody's interest, right? And movies that pass the Bechdel Test deserve attention.

The Bechdel test is used to identify gender bias in fiction. A work passes the test if it features at least two women who talk to each other about something other than a man. Commentators have noted that a great proportion of contemporary works fail to pass this threshold of representing women.
Although, this is an interesting idea, it would be difficult to implement since the search criteria requires a qualitative assessment. Fortunately, at least one person has created an IMDb list pertinent to your suggestion:
Great movies that passes the bechdel test

The Bechdel test:
1. The movie must have two or more (named) female charachters in it
2. ...who talk to each other
3. ...about other things than men.

Feel free to make a comment if you think I left out a movie that deserves to be on the list.

I would like to see every movie on IMDB receive a Bechdel rating. It would be easy to quantify as a simple 3-point rating system. Points would be allocated as movies pass each of these tests:

1) The movie features two female characters with names;
2) The two characters talk to each other;
3) When they talk, conversation revolves around something other than the men in the movie.

I am always curious how new movies score on the Bechdel test, and it would be great to have a crowd sourced rating system on IMDB. It would be a pretty simple thing to implement, I think.

I agree - doing it themselves would be pretty easy alternatively maybe http://bechdeltest.com/ would give IMDB access to their database. That way IMD BE would just have to show yes, no, or n/a for each movie.

The link Double D posted above is to the Bechdel Test Movie List, so if you want to check how a movie fares then look there:

http://bechdeltest.com/

Of course, if this suggestion proves popular it is possible that IMDB would either partner with the site to include such data or to offer a way for people to add an analysis like they do with the parental guide. So if people want to see this then +1 the idea (or "me too" it, as the site now says).

It looks like there may be some interest based on a Google search for IMDb list of films meeting the Bechtel test.

It may be worth it for me to suggest an IMDb poll related to the Bechtel test.

Go for it!!

More fun would be a "which movie fails the Bechtel Test the hardest?" To start you off: "Three Men and a Baby."

Surely something like "Lawrence of Arabia" (a three-and-a-half-hour-long movie with no women in credited speaking roles) fails the Bechdel test much harder than "Three Men and a Baby" (which has several named female characters with speaking roles).

But seriously, I would recommend that supporters of the Bechdel test should start by adding information to the FAQs of movies about how the film does in relation to the test. You don't need permission from anyone to add additional items to the FAQ, and that would get people used to seeing the information on IMDb.

A category for rating movies by the Bechdel Test system on IMDB would be my preference. Movies could receive a 1, 2 or 3 rating if they pass each test. I'd like to be able to see a Bechdel rating along with every other attribute of the movie - not as a token category, but integrated into other measures of quality like acting and writing, etc...

I like lots of movies that don't pass any measures on the test - but a well-written, well-acted movie with several significant female characters is even better! Including this rating would absolutely influence which movies I see.

Please suggest a poll!

Maren Haynes,

I found eleven people who created lists based on the Bechdel Test. I've created a poll based on their research. I will suggest the poll after contacting them and getting their feedback.

Maren Haynes,

I've suggested the Bechdel Test poll on the IMDb Poll message board. Although I've suggested it, there is no guarantee the poll will be published. In case you wish to comment, here are the links:

We could all work together to build out the bechdel-pass and bechdel-fail keywords:
http://www.imdb.com/find?s=kw&q=bechdel

Keywords are used to describe elements of what that title is about. The main purpose of keywords is to allow visitors to IMDb to easily search the site for specific title attributes.

To learn more about submitting keywords, visit the keyword submission guide here:  http://www.imdb.com/help/search?domain=helpdesk_faq&index=2&file=keywords

Happy New Years to you, Dan!

I kicked it off by adding some movies and TV shows to the keyword based on the lists and sites you mention above.  It's a great idea for an IMDb data set.

This is an update to Jordan Hay's recommendation.
bechdel-test-passed (52 titles)
bechdel-test-failed (29 titles)

Those interested, can help by adding the appropriate keyword to titles.
