Batman series BATMAN BEGINS, THE DARK KNIGHT, THE DARK KNIGHT RISES have unusual genre pattern like say BB- ACTION/ADVENTURE, TDK-ACTION/CRIME/DRAMA/THRILLER & TDKR-ACTION/THRILLER. I need to make all 3 film genres into ACTION CRIME DRAMA THRILLER. As said though its a superhero film, it has main aspect of crime and drama (The Dark Knight and Batman Begins) rather adventure (Batman Begins). Thanks regards Harsh.

Hi, Harshad Chopra. First of all, have you checked to see all of which genres are assigned to each movie? Not all of the genre assignments will necessarily be listed on the main/root page (whether default view or reference view) for any movie, if there are more than three assignments or so. Have you tried submitting corrections to any of the corresponding IMDb title pages? If so, what are the 18-digit reference numbers of those submissions? If not, please see https://help.imdb.com/article/contribution/contribution-information/correcting-existing-data/GPFQGX9CFSHW5YUX# for some information about how to do so, and please also bear in mind that there is also a genre guide to be observed. For The Dark Knight series, we should first discuss the situation a bit, by the way. We should definitely want to ask whether or not all three installments belong to the same set of genres. I'd largely agree that they do. Without question, they belong to the action genre and the crime genre. I find the matter of keeping/assigning "drama", "thriller" or "adventure" to be debatable, though. Hopefully some fans and movie connoisseurs will opine. Ultimately, it will be important to see how the IMDb site authorities assess the matter.

Most likely Batman Begins is seen by some as having an adventure element that the sequels perhaps do not, since there is a part of the movie where Bruce Wayne wanders aimlessly until going on something of a short quest. The guide defines the "adventure" genre as having the characteristic of containing "numerous consecutive and inter-related scenes of characters participating in hazardous or exciting experiences for a specific goal." With that in mind, the classifications are perhaps the opposite. In Batman Begins, Bruce Wayne never really adopts a specific goal that winds up involving him navigating a cascade of obstacles. Whereas in The Dark Knight, he is almost immediately put on the path of stopping the Joker, yet it is a dual-protagonist dual-story, with Harvey Dent pursuing an adjacent goal of convicting primarily Maroni. Likewise, The Dark Knight Rises becomes in short order about preventing Gotham from being blown up, as Bane previously overthrows the established civil authority rather quickly.

Actually Crime n Drama are in all series. Scarecrow, Joker And Bane adds thrill but Wayne is battling his own demons. Secondly not all superhero films are Adventure. Also i read the genre leaflet and find that it must be dealt with ACTION CRIME DRAMA AND THRILLER. I generally deal with Genre issues (will do so in future) also months back Batman Begins had its genre Thriller removed without any rhyme or reason, which isnt acceptable!

A thriller "Should contain numerous sensational scenes or a narrative that is sensational or suspenseful." Are we to understand correctly that suspense as a concept involves a lot of not being sure what will happen next despite expecting the dramatic or the horrific at the same time as hoping for an uplifting outcome? I guess all three movie meet the criteria, but maybe the suspense stands out most in The Dark Knight and perhaps the least in Batman Begins, which probably shouldn't matter, if each one is suspenseful enough. The IMDb guidelines on the "thriller" genre classify the concept as subjective.

I'd say that in case of Nolan trilogy it does have strong adventure elements in each and single movie (Begins with League subplot, The Dark Knight with Hong Kong and The Dark Knight Rises with The Pit and a few more exotic locations).

Hi Harshad -

Please keep in mind that the "Adventure" genre is subjective, if there are titles on the site (such as those you referenced for the Batman series) with genres that you feel are listed incorrectly or are missing, you are welcome to submit the Genre additions/deletions through our online Update form, you will also be able to include an Explanation to argue your case for adding or removing the genre and our editors will take a look.

Harshad Chopra, there seems to be some debate about whether to keep or remove the "Adventure" from the genre listing for Batman Begins. I wish whosoever is a staunch advocate of applying this genre to the movie would come forward if he/she could. I would say, that if Batman Begin is "adventure" then its two sequels also are, and that if it is not then its two sequels may also not be.

Hi Harshad,

Thanks for your post.

As mentioned in previous comments, genres are subjective to the individual and where possible we try to capture the most common ones associated with a title. There will always be circumstances where people are unable to agree on a genre and these will come down to our internal vetting decisions. We always encourage users to submit updates via the Edit Page button.

If you have submitted updates and these have not been approved, it means our editors do not believe the changes to be accurate.

Thanks for your understanding and continued support.

His passions are a little over the top. Sort of like William Shatner's acting in the 60's early 70's! LOL

CliffJ, I guess without people who have over-the-top passion for film IMDb wouldn't have been as great as it is now. Some people called me over the top on that matter many times (partially they were right, I guess)...

Its not a joke. By the way, i m also not loitering around this thread because my actual previous edits for other films were not preserved. Actually I read Genre Leaflet (Thank God in real sense) what happens other people delete "Drama" and "Romance" from Indian films as they know more than editors and yes they make edits on this despite raising questions on several times on this board. A fine example. And brother Cliff, what if i add Romance in CONJURING, is it fine or u say Yes you can???
