Another actor is usurping my professional name!

I am SAG AFTRA member David Press. I am now 78 years old. That professional name has been mine for many years including Actors Equity. I occasionally continue to do do some acting work in the Washington DC/ Baltimore and Pittsburgh regions and I also did Equity theater work in the region and OOB in NYC. How can the David Press whose picture and resume appear on the IMDB site work with that name when by union rules I still hold the sole right to the name? My own credits are not appearing on IMDB!!

I am not aware of there being any way to stop someone from going by their own name.

Look, for example, at "Robin Williams." IMDb lists at least 18 people by the name http://www.imdb.com/name/nm5845119/?r...

Even if there was a need to make someone change their name, it certainly is not something IMDb would be responsible for.

This is a 75 year old Colin Ferrell http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0268200/?r..., who still acts, while this Colin Farrell is using the same name http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0268199/?r...

As bmSF says, there isn't much that can be done about the name, in fact, there are 5 people using David Press on IMDB, most of them actors:

http://www.imdb.com/find?q=David%20Pr...

The chaps with the photo seems to be from New Zealand, which might possibly explain it:

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0696212/

However, this we can help with:

My own credits are not appearing on IMDB!!

Are none of those David Press pages for your work?

If not, are any titles you got a credit on in IMDB? If so you can add yourself:

www.imdb.com/help/show_leaf?resumeadd...

If they aren't, then you can add the title.

If you give us more details then we can provide further advice on how to proceed.

My credit as David Press 4 as the Pawnbroker in MY ONE and ONLY is correct, but the video game role is not. As for other credits, someplace in my files I have information from SAG about residual payments that list work that I did and therefore can document; I 'm still getting residuals for MOTHMAN PROPHECIES, for example, and from an episode of THE WIRE. Please tell me how to proceed.

OK, so this is you (for our purposes anyway):

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm3327587/

But the video game credit isn't you. We can assume it is one of the others, but which one is difficult to work out. Your best bet is to split that off to another page and then one of the others can hoover it up when they are checking their credits.

You do this by editing the video game and changing the name to:

David Press (VI)

The page will then be yours. First thing I'd do is add in some biographical details - birth place and date of birth if you aren't shy about it. This will make it difficult for anyone to merge it with, for example, a younger actor from New Zealand.

Next your other credits...

Here is the general guide to adding them:

www.imdb.com/help/show_leaf?resumeadd...

The key question is: Were you listed on the credits?

If so, then that is the best evidence to submit.

If not, then you will have to rely on the other evidence - you'll need to familiarise yourself with the uncredited guidelines:

www.imdb.com/help/show_leaf?uncredite...

You can add screenshots of your credits directly in here (there is an "add image" button bottom right of the reply window) and/or send them in to support a submission using this form:

http://www.imdb.com/helpdesk/data_ver...

You can also paste in the submission reference numbers here and staff can look into them, they can be found here:

http://www.imdb.com/updates/history

That is a little starter, we can provide more detailed advice if/when you run into any problems.

Thank you so very much for the completeness of your reply. I'll try to follow up on this as soon as I can. At 78, with limited computer competence, it may take some time to complete. My daughter introduced me to the IMDb site and suggested that I should try to correct the information.

No problem, we are here when you need us. We can submit some changes for you if you are having no success (although you will have to add the evidence - we can give you more details on that too though), so if you run into problems let us know, as it isn't worth killing yourself over it.

Emperor, I  just figured out how to return to this site!  Sorry for the delay.  I have some documents to substantiate my claims of having been uncredited in several films in which I actually was a Principal Day Player.  I can scan the documents, but I don't know where to email the files. Can you send me an email address?

There is no email address.  You can post them here into this thread, though.  If you don't want them shown here, you can use this form and upload them onto a pic hosting site or use "drop box" (from which you can remove them once done) and put a link on the data verification form http://www.imdb.com/helpdesk/data_verification

How would I upload a file from the scanned file on the computer to this thread?  I might do that with stuff that didn't have my Social Security number or other private information.  Can you instruct me?

Emperor, I just had a letter to Melange Pictures, LLC returned by the postal service as forwarding address unknown.  According to stuff on the internet, Melange bought the rights to Republic Films' library at a bankruptcy sale.  I was asking for access to a copy of a film for TV starring Valerie Bertinelli that was shot at least in part in Pittsburgh.  It is credited on her webpage with a 1992 date as having two titles, WHAT SHE DOESN'T KNOW , aka Shades of Gray.  At the time of the shoot in Pittsburgh, the working title on my script had another title, FOR I HAVE SINNED.  In the script, my character was named "Old Man".  I was the person who conceals a bomb and then remotely triggers it as Bertinelli's character approaches. Although I was a Principal Day Player accommodated with overnight hotel lodging and my own dressing trailer compartment, my character was not credited.  I have contacted someone at SAG's Pension and Welfare office to try to dig up the record for the day's work.  (There are no residual records because, with the name changes on the script they avoided residuals).

I do get residuals for my uncredited role as Wollcott in THE MOTHMAN PROPHECIES.  Again, I was a Principal Day Player on the Pittsburgh area shoot.  I am on screen  in the same scenes as the character of Ruth.  The role of Ruth, played by Cleveland actress Dorothy Silver,  now appears on the IMDb cast list; therefore my role should also be added.  I can happily provide a copy of a residual payment  notice if you can tell me how to send it.

Enough for now, but there are more principal roles that have gone uncredited that I would like your help in documenting.

Again, I thank you.
Dave

When you type in a reply, below the box is a bar that allows you to add
quick formatting to the text (bold, italics, etc,) but the little
picture of a camera will allow you to attach an image straight from your
computer.

As you say, Social Security numbers shouldn't be
posted in a public forum, so use the link bmSF provides. The simplest
and (luckily) most secure way of getting a link to add there is using something like Dropbox:

https://db.tt/bRH6hg3s

It installs simply like ordinary software and creates a "Dropbox" folder. You can put your scans in there just by copying and pasting them across (as you'd move files between folders). If you right click on these files their is a Dropbox option in the menu which lets you copy a link to the file which you can use here (don't worry, the explanation is longer than it takes to do ;) ):

http://www.imdb.com/helpdesk/data_verification

The good thing is that this file is only visible to you and anyone you send the link to, when the scans aren't needed you can remove them from the folder again and they are no longer online in any form - handy if there are privacy concerns.

And it isn't useful just for this - I share a lot of family photos using it, as you can invite people to view a folder, anything you drop in there appear in an identical folder on their computers when they install Dropbox (or they get a link emailed to you). I couldn't do without it.

As well as the documentation another good bit of evidence to send to help with uncredited roles is a screenshot of you from the final released version, as this shows you are in a well defined role (not just a face in a crowd scene).

All of the above should cover the general bases for getting the evidence to IMDB, if you have any more questions then fire away.

While we are here, have you tried to remove the video game credit from your page?

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm3327587/

I gave the instructions on how to do it above, but if you are having problems then one of us will do that for you.

Sorry, it isn't done to send information to me (as I'm not staff), but to get yourself a secure link that you can use in this form:

Thanks, Emperor.  I thought you were staff because you are so knowledgeable.  I followed the link you provided and hopefully it will lead to my giving the staff access to the documents I am trying to submit through Dropbox.

Sorry I'm just an ordinary user with a fancy badge - staff have a green border and the name "Staff" next to them (they are around and chip in when their input is required).

I followed the link you provided and hopefully it will lead to my giving
the staff access to the documents I am trying to submit through
Dropbox.

Good stuff - hopefully that will sort this out. Give this a bump if it has been a few weeks and there hasn't been any progress.

It has been two months now.  The video game item has correctly been removed from my credits, but that is the only sign of progress that I have found.  Any ideas?.

I am a little confused with all of that above, so bear with me.

You said it's "David Press 4" but "David Press (IV)" does not display the credit you mentioned.

It seems you're now "David Press (III).

You say the video game is gone, but sadly it's still there, if that's your page (it does have the "My One and Only-Pawnbroker"  credit).

I see you mention above that you've scanned and put into Dropbox documents regarding some "uncredited" work.  Did you submit requests to add the credits first, then include a link to the documents via the verification form? http://www.imdb.com/helpdesk/data_verification

If so, can you add submission ID numbers so staff can take a look and see what the problem might be concerning these submissions?

When we've figured all this out, I suggest starting a new thread asking about something specific so staff can take a look rather than having this now sprawling thread with multiple issues.

If you haven't made submissions (this is done by going to the page for the show or film and clicking the "edit page" button and filling in the information) we can guide you or maybe get all the data and do it for you.

I submitted a request to remove the video game from your page. We only need to work on adding your other credits mentioned above.
