Android IMDB app won't stop notifications

The IMDB app in Google Play store was updated yesterday. Since then the app is throwing all sorts of notifications at me. I cannot find a way to turn it off. Notifications have been trailers & New in Theaters notifications which I'm not interested in.

How do I disable this?

Hi Mark,

To turn off notifications, tap the profile icon on the top right of any page in the app. Then tap the 3 dots to find "Settings" and look for "Notification Settings." On that page you can turn off any topics you're not interested in.  IMDb

Thanks. That will probably fix it. The problem I had was I was just going to notifications, not Settings->Notification Settings.

Yeah, maybe a little. In general I love the app and use it every day figuring out familiar faces and lesser known actors. (rant) My only ongoing real frustration is these over-the-top, bottom 25% of the screen ads that have now taken over. How many times do I need to see 'Victoria & Abdul', etc. I wouldn't mind it so much if the ads were once or twice a day max but it's gotten to where I'm thinking I need to find another app, not that there is one, but still. (/rant)

Thanks for the help

Please don't get me wrong. Great app and website, and I do understand the need to earn money thru ads. That said when I opened the app a few minutes ago it was 20% ad at the bottom and maybe 50% video trailer at the top. I use the app to learn about movies and the people who make them and right now I don't think more than 30% of the initial screen on my Android supports that. I close every ad by hand immediately and then scroll down to ignore the trailer video.

That said I realize that I'm probably not typical. I complained to NetFlix when they got rid of reviews and I really didn't like it when they told me their average customer just wants to watch stuff quick so the moved to nothing but the cover photo.

Does no one actually read and think these days? I think there's got to be a market for people who want to consider things a bit first, but again, I think I must be uncommon.

Anyway, thanks much for pointing me toward the notification solution.

Cheers. Have a great weekend

I have switched off notifications in the app but I am still getting them through. I may have to uninstall this app.

I'm having the same problem.  Hey IMDB, you are about to lose a gangload of users if you don't KNOCK THIS CRAP OFF!! These push notifications are invasive, frequent, and ANNOYING!  You have users who are at the point of uninstall.  Enough already!

I'm sorry to hear you are experiencing this. We haven't sent very many notifications out, so it's unusual to hear you are receiving so many. We think there may be an issue with Android batching multiple push messages and sending them all at once.  We are investigating. Feel free to turn them off at any time in Settings.

I too am still getting notifications despite turning them off in the settings. And as for 'not sending many out', I had 9 when I woke up this morning and have had four more since

Could you let me know if they were trailers or something else? The movie names would be helpful. That’s definitely way more than we would ever send.

Hi Karl, let us know if this is still happening. If we've sent a push message to your device and Android hasn't delivered it yet, and then you disable notifications in the application, it's possible you could still get it. But that shouldn't happen again. It's a timing issue that should only occur once.

My Android device (Galaxy S7, Android 7.0, IMDb app 7.1.4.107140200) has just sent me two notifications about trailers, despite ALL notifications being turned off within the app. It's not the first time that's happened either so, sadly, it's being uninstalled. One customer gone.

Sorry to hear that Phil. We haven't been able to reproduce this. Sounds like you have already uninstalled but if not, we would love it if you could post screenshots of the settings screen, and any notifications you received. We're trying to track down whether it is a timing issue.

Hi Jess, this might be an issue for ppl like me who never bothered to register an imdb account. Maybe your app doesn't know how to store or address the settings then and goes on by default. Just an idea by a fellow android developer.
Greetings Mario.

Hi Simon, if you wouldn't mind, we'd love to see screenshots of the settings screen and the notifications you've received. We're trying to track down the issue. Also, getting your device details would be helpful.  Thanks.

Like others, I too have all notifications off in the Android app - yet seem to get at least two updates for trailers in quick succession every day for the past 4 days or so.
I love the app, but this is ridiculous.

Hi James, we're trying to track this down but unable to reproduce. If you wouldn't mind sending your device details and any screenshots of the settings and the notifications you've received, that would be super helpful.

I don't have the imbd app installed and I get notifications all the time. And what's more annoying is that the imbd notifications make the same sound as my text messages. I bought tickets for a movie on my phone about 3 months ago and now it won't stop. I cant find the app in my phone anywhere and I end up with 15 different notifications stacked up at a time. Help me stop them, please!!!

Hi Heather, thanks for reporting this problem! A couple of things will help us figure out what is going on.

1) Are they email notifications? or push notifications?  If you can reply with a couple examples of what they actually say, we can help figure that out.

2) What kind of phone do you have? And what operating system?  You can find this in your device settings, under "About phone" or "About device."
