Colin,
Yes you can change an name as it appears on IMDb....my answer is general because your question is.

If i had to guess, you added someone's credit to IMDb, probably created a new name page in the process, but then found out that he is already listed on IMDb but under a new name?

If this is even partially right then there is a much easier way to do that - and a much more correct one too! Of course maybe it was his first credit so the method would be different.

The key thing is that on IMDb the "main" name is the one used for the page, but that if the person is credited under a different name (even a typo) that the data be entered with that as a note.

The answer to your question is "yes" and data can be edited via the button at the foot of any page....more specifics will get you more specifics if you need them.

Yes I agree it was a bit general and sounds a bit stupid reading it again :)
Basically I've added the actor under his REAL name (Which he did not want).
So, I've then added him again under the name he wishes to have. It was his first credit.
But now he has two credits on the film. Same character... Different actor name.
Can I delete the original name I entered?
I'm now confusing myself :)

Colin,
No problem I understand. I would say that adding data to IMDb should be simple because it is not about what someone wants to be called, it is always about how their name appeared on the screen.

That said, I guess if your friend has a stage name and a real name, that almost certainly he is on the screen with his stage name.

To fix this it is easier and quicker to merge the page with his real name into the page with his stage name.

I will post you a guide to do this in a second, but it is maybe easier if you give me the two names/pages, tell me which one is real and which one is stage and I can do it for you.

Of course this would mean putting that information on a public forum....and most people using a stage name would not want that....so an alternative if you do want me to do this for you would be to put that information in a post here, post it, count to 10, then delete it....I'll get an email notification of you post which contains the info I need, but it will not be stuck on a public forum for all to see.

Or, to be honest, you can do this yourself as it is pretty easy.

Colin,
So basically this merge tool is used for when someone's work is split over 2 pages - we move them to one.

Duplicate credits etc would also be merged if they are identical.

A key step for you would be in the second screenshot where it says "preserve previous name", you want to UNTICK that box because we are discarding the "real" name so when that page moves we do not want to preserve it.

=======================

So, go to the real name page and find the edit page button at the bottom of the page:

On the next screen you'll see this - select the option for name correction and go next.

Next screen you enter the name you wish to change to - for a merge this is simply the name of your other page...ideally enter it number and all - but even if you don't the next screen will help you out. If you have a second name page with a slightly different name because it appeared on screen that way (John Smith Jr.) then leave the "preserve previous name" ticked - it will still merge but with a note that will say (as John Smith Jr) - it is factual and keeps people from thinking it is a mistake to credit the work to John Smith.
The reason can just be "same person"...but if you have some detail do add it:

Next screen will offer you other names just as a check - tick the right one and move on:

The final screen is just a sanity check, checking you are not trying to do something else and that you are sure...acknowledge the warning and proceed:

Final screen - green to go...hit submit.

^all this made it sound really long and complex...but it is quite easy to do and takes 2 minutes max....hopefully you never need to do it again, but just in case.
