At the beginning of the episode, what did Sweeney see in the cigarette that frightened him?
I replayed it a few times, but couldn't make it out.

It was not in the cigarette. It was an ant crawling on his right thumb between the knuckle and the joint to his wrist. Please don't say anything in reply. I jumped ahead one episode in my viewing of the series. Don't need you giving me a spoiler please!!!

I saw the ant, but why would an ant scare him?  It looked like there was some white object in the cigarette he was trying to roll.  (I haven't watched the rest of the episode yet, I got stuck trying to figure that out.)

I think I need new glasses, maybe I should try a 1080p instead of 720p.

This is why I cannot reply. He was talking about his wife and the ant scared him. The white spot is just a white spot. When watching American Gods one must pay attention and recall previous events to garner the meaning. I have 3D TV. That ant was superimposed. The rest was blurred. The focus was definitely on the ant. It's meaning is buried in a previous episode. I have had to rewatch this series episodes in season two just to catch little nuances that were missed watching several episodes as many as 3 times, just to catch something that I had missed.
Re-Watch the previous episodes to get the meaning.
